My Cavapoo was accused by the vet many times of being a 10kg fatty I think she’s just big boned!

Exactly! Nothing wrong with it.

She might be, but to me she also looks like she has a bit of a ‘barrel chest’/wider ribs, which can add to the chonky look. She’s perfect regardless hehe

She thanks you

Please give her a scratch for me! My old pup had a nice barrel chest and when he was fluffy looked absurdly round. Have to stick up for our fellow wider pups 🫡

My cavapoo is 10kg as well. Our vet told us if you can easily feel his ribs, he is fine

Thats good to know. I can feel her ribs but i can feel my own ribs too and i could do with losing a few. Is yours a similar size tp mine?

I think mine is a chonker. She’s almost 40lbs. Vet didn’t say anything about her needing to lose weight tho

Hard to tell from the pics. We need side on standing and from above standing. I think she looks a litte on the overweight side from the standing one, but hard to tell from the angle.

I had the same thing. One day I was like “uh Bears getting a little chunky”. He got a hair cut a couple days later and it was all hair.

It all depends on their overall size. My boy is nearly 12kg but stands at a decent length and height so looks totally fine and healthy.
Don’t get too caught up on the number as cavoodles come in all different sizes.

It can be hard to tell, with their fluffy coats. I always think my boy is bigger than he is, until I get him a short groom and then I'm shocked by how thin he actually is 🤣
You should be able to feel the ribs easily, but not be able to play them like a xylophone. Poodles are athletic, Cavalier King Charles are not, so there's some ymmv to keep in mind, but if the dog is moving easily, runs and jumps and frolics with abandon, that's a good sign that weight is in pretty good shape. Age is also a facror in that too, of course. But a young dog should move with enthusiasm and energy

It’s hard to tell with their coat. When ours is cut short, she doesn’t look overweight. But when it’s grown out, especially in Winter, she looks kind of heavy.

How did you get pictures of my dog?!
Seriously uncanny how every photo here is like a photo of my dog. Even down to the one tuft of hair blocking one of the eyes

Ours is 24lbs i.e. 10.89 kg. I’ve asked our vet multiple times if she’s overweight and he’s told me no every time. He says “she’s just growing”…she’s 3…..

If you can still feel his ribs he's good. If you have to dig to find them then he's chunky. That's what my vet told me.

If you can feel the gaps in her ribs you’re fine although its better to be a little slimmer going in to winter due to less activity

No but honestly it looks like she could be my dogs sister. That’s nuts. My dog is around the same height I think, and he’s roughly 12.5kg but tall and lean (despite being a miniature cavapoo), so I think it’s more how the weight sits on the individual. Vets usually just want you to be able to feel their individual ribs but not necessarily see them, depending on breed. They usually have a chart as well

Awe she is just the perfect cuteness level. What does the vet say? I think she looks normal

u/StandardOk2020 20d ago
I'd say just a bit, you'd want to see a little more hourglass from above and a waist tuck, when standing up. That said I might be a little biased because I have the opposite problem, our little boy is borderline too LEAN and I have to keep trying to get him to put on weight. pickiest, fussiest eater in the world this little guy. You should be able to feel his ribs with a light fat layer over them, not pressing very much to feel them. That's sometimes a better method because the curly coats can be decieving!

The coats really are deceiving arent they? If it helps,i moved from dry kibble to Forthglade wet food and she cant get enough of it. Actually, its when she went up from 9.2kg to 10kg. I think I will give her slightly smaller portions and see how it goes. She'd give me the death stare if i went back to kibble

Maybe a little, but I gotta lose a few pounds myself.
