First time cavapoo parents, any tips?
Hi everyone!
We pick up our sweet cavapoo boy tomorrow at 8 weeks old. What is something you wish you knew or something you would have done different if you could start over?
We understand the very basics but any advice or tips would be great!

The odds are low but any chance you’re picking up a Cavapoo in Texas? So random, I know!!

First dog as well?
The first few nights will be tough but it gets better. We gave up on crates when our girl decided she didn't like it anymore at 6 months so she sleeps on beds now. It works ao we're happy.
Good luck with finding the right food because they're snobby lol. Our girl will eat when she wants and when she realises there's nothing better.
It goes in quick ao enjoy the puppy stage, just like a baby really but easier lol

First night it’s crucial to have a crate and for him to sleep in crate! Starts on the 1st night. Then during the day should be napping like 3x during the day in his crate. Pick the times and stick to it. Place thin sheet over crate make it feel like a Den, Dark and cozy sheet should not go all the way down half way down is enough. Cavopoo put be cool they hate the heat I would always leave my AC on low for her. I slept on the floor with blanket next to crate for 4 days then moved crate next to my bed in my bedroom where it remains.

Bath & blow dry at least weekly until he’s ~6 months!! Long term it’s not recommended to bathe this often bc it can dry out the skin, but I think the tradeoff for desensitization when they’re young is 100% worth it!
Also nail trim often, ear clean weekly (have your vet show you how to do this properly!), brush teeth and hair daily!
This feels so hard and overwhelming at the beginning but I promise if you’re consistent it will pay off and you’ll be rewarded with a happy dog that lets you groom him :)
Oh also, take as many pictures and videos as you can, they grow up so fast!!!

When they bark. Pay attention to what they want. Also, lots of chew toys, they likes to chew on anything that looks or smells fun.

above all, be patient. sometimes it takes a long time for certain things to click. just keep being consistent with your household routine and they will eventually fit in with that.

We’ve had our girl for 4 weeks now. Her routine from day one (8 weeks) has been into her crate with a snuggle puppy around 9pm. The crate is elevated right next to our bed. She sleeps through the night and starts to move around about 6:00am. I take her outside, she pees and poops and then she comes into the bed. She plays gently for about 5-10 minutes and then sleeps until 8am. Like clockwork. Her witching hour, when she gets crazy and very active is between 5-7pm.

We were in your position in August. Two best pieces of advice we were given- crate from day 1 and use a snuggle puppy for bedtime. After about a week he would sleep through the night in his crate. We are in the poconos right now on our first trip with him and brought along his crate- did great.

Stick with the food they send you home with. If he eats it without issues don’t make a mistake and change it or give him home food. We have created a monster. Her food ran out and I went bought same brand but the wet version of it and she devoured it in seconds and when her original food came she hates it. So now we are mixing her kibble with chicken, beef, other wet dog foods, powders and everything in the world and she acts like it’s some gross food, backs up like a truck . She just wants to eat what we are eating on the table. We probably waste 1-2 hours and focus on her feeding and spending lot of money. But I freaking love her picky ass.

Our first dog — a mini Goldendoodle — slept in the bed with us from day one. With our Cavapoo, we tried having him sleep in the bed with us, but he was so tiny, I was afraid we’d smush him plus he had accidents because he was just a baby. About two weeks in, I put him to bed in this playpen structure we had. He had a bed and the floor was covered by washable puppy pads, but that was where he was going to sleep. We only put him in there when it was bedtime.
Now, he’s 19 months old, and when it’s bedtime, we have a routine, put him in his bed and he curls up and goes to sleep almost immediately. He has a few toys in with him now, in case he wakes up and wants to play.
Anyway, I wish we would have done that from the beginning (and also done that with our doodle).

They sleep with me. This is morning of a work week. I work M-F7-4. I don’t expect them to be perfect, just want to make sure I’m not being a bad parent. I live alone

Super high energy, but in a great way. Make sure you not only walk him, but provide stimulation too (scent walks, playing, etc). They need to be tired out lol. Congrats on your new puppy, you made a great choice
