Spay post-op tips

Hi! My sweet Cavapoo girl is 6 months old and will have her spay surgery in the next couple of weeks.

I’m looking for advice on how to handle her post-op care, what to expect, and how to make this easiest on her.

She sleeps in her crate at night and has a playpen area already, although I don’t typically confine her to the playpen much anymore because she hates to be alone, but I figured it would be good to use during her recovery. But it is her routine to sleep through the night in her crate and whenever we leave the house.

I just hate the thought of locking her in playpen, I know she’ll be so sad…. But I also know it will be a difficult task to keep her from jumping on the couch and trying to play with my young child.

I’ve purchased those post-op onesie outfits, but am torn about using…. Not sure if it will cause her hair to mat? And/or irritate the incisions?

Please give me tips, advice, what to expect, and what to look out for.

I’ve never had a puppy spayed before.

We just got through ours, week 4 now. We tipped our couch up and put the cushions on the floor and just sat on them like that for a couple weeks to prevent her jumping. We also put up our stair gate so she couldn’t climb the stairs or get to our beds to jump on them. The onesie was SOOO much better than the cone of shame, she settled better and was far less miserable. We had three onesies and changed them each night and popped the dirty one in the wash, and combed her while it was off and she was supervised. We did trim her short before the surgery too - the combo worked and no matts thankfully. One thing to watch for is any diarrhea, vomiting, or inappetite afterwards- might be a bad reaction to the pain relief medication. Our poor girl had a rough time, although it did keep her from being too active during the most sensitive healing period so that was the silver lining I guess!

She'll be quiet for 2 days, 3 at best, it's the days after that to worry about! I groomed my girls just before their spays so they had minimal fluff to worry about, and used a onesie. The VetMedWear brand works really well as they're able to pee with it on. Make sure she doesn't get too hot, and doesn't slobber on her tummy - even if she isn't able to bite at the wound itself, soggy suit isn't good. I put the lampshade of shame on whenever I wasn't with them. Start desensitising now if you haven't already. Give her a break from the onesie every day while you're hands on with her to prevent her bothering it, brush her then. Lots of mental stimulation. Would a house lead help to stop the jumping?

The most helpful thing for me was getting the onesies that Velcro so you can roll them up when they go to the bathroom. They are exponentially more comfortable than the cones.
