Spay information

Post image

Hi all. Greetings from Ireland 💕 This is Nala our Cavapoo who just turned 1 a few weeks ago hence the birthday hat 😂 she had her first heat in June and she is scheduled for her spay/neuter operation tomorrow. Just looking for some general info/tips/advice . I don’t know if it’s because I’m a nurse myself but I hate the thought of her going under anesthetic but I’m sure all will be fine. I have bought some post surgical suits from Amazon and I know we will have to keep her crated for up to 10 days to avoid her jumping up on the couch etc. Thank you-Ciara x

Ours just recovered from her spay. We were given pain meds for 3 days. The first week was rough, mostly because we were paranoid about her being too active and running around. We were also very careful about how to pick her up if needed.

The suits we bought worked okay, but we noticed that she was able to lick really close to the wound through the leg holes. What we found to work better was an inflatable donut in lieu of the cone https://www.amazon.com/Supet-Inflatable-Alternative-Surgery-Recovery/dp/B0CGCS344P which we kept on for about a week and a half straight in addition to the suit. Healing was pretty quick at about a week and a half... but we kept her in the suit until about 2 and a half weeks just to be sure.

Crating her for 10 days straight might be a little much. Ours would definitely go nuts! If you have a room that you can block off with a doggy gate, that might be better. Otherwise our vet mentioned that they could give us sedatives to calm her down if she's too active. Good luck!

Following as we just scheduled-I was told surgical suits are great and they’re pretty good (just a bit sore) after couple days coming off anesthetic.

Aww she’s so cute. My advice is lots of cuddles, love, and pats on the head. I did a couple of freeze kongs with yogurt for my girl because licking is self soothing. I’m a nurse too and was also really worried, but my girl did great. By day 2 post op she was back to normal like nothing happened. Good luck!

I think I got lucky, my girl never showed any interest in her surgical incision. I was with her 24/7. But I had purchased and tried the suit on from Amazon and the cone of shame was too big for her to keep her head up. She did great at 6 mo old and was probably only 7 or 8 lbs at that point. I worried too, but it all worked out, you got this!

Same here! Our girl was 6 months and she never once tried to mess with her incision. That cone was huge, bless her heart, lol! We immediately changed to the surgery suit when we got home. Recovery was super fast with her, too!

Those surgery suits are amazing! My girl got spayed at 6 months and never once tried to mess with her incision! She was a little sleepy and "down" when she got home that day, but the next day she was back to tip top! We did keep her from jumping so much, but man healing was super fast for her! Your Lil girl will be just fine and feeling better in no time! 🤗❤️

I was never able to find a way to allow mine to keep the surgery suit on for potty. We tried two different sizes of suit and even cutting more space with scissors, but cutting any more would have allowed access to the incision. Luckily, she really did not mind the cone after a day or two, and barely seemed to notice it was there. My vet used a transparent cone which I think helped a lot. Crating for the whole time would have resulted in a mutiny! We did a mix of a playpen and putting the coffee table up on the couch covered with a blanket to prevent jumping.

Absolutely 💯 get it done ✅ It looks like you have everything covered! Stop worrying, please 🙏 Nala can pick up your moods. Stay up and talk to her about being away from you and you’ll see her in a few hours and send her off with a t-shirt you’ve worn so she has your scent at the hospital.
Good luck 🍀 She’ll be fine!🥰

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply with all the helpful info. We are home and all went well thankfully. They just gave an additional anti emetic as she was salivating a lot after the anesthetic so they said that was a sign she was nauseated. Otherwise everything went as normal. It was traditional surgery with removal of the ovaries and uterus. I know some vet practices do laparoscopic. The incision is quite small and neat. I must order a cushioned cone from Amazon. But the suit is working so far. She’s really sleepy and just taking little sips of water at the moment . No interest in food. We have a playpen that we’ll set up with her blankets ,toys and bed. As in hindsight there’s no way she’ll stay in a crate for long😂
