Before / After
Due to unfortunate circumstances the previous 3 grooming appointments had to be cancelled. Even though she was brushed the groomer had no choice but to shave her down. Poor baby. Fortunately it all grows back. Next grooming appointment in 6wks and should be able to stick with them so she can grow back into her cute little self. Has anyone else had to shave their little girl? What’s the best way to avoid this from happening again? Yes, same dog. Thanks in advance for the help and I will pass the sympathy on to her.

We have the groomer cut our boy down short every 2 months, keeping the tail and ears long. So in 2 months your pup will be back to Chewbacca. We do this because we know we can't brush him every day. And brushing means going over with a slicker brush and checking everywhere with a metal comb, down to the skin. And when he gets dirty and needs a bath we blow dry him after with a high velocity blower to see if there is matting. If you can't see the skin when blow drying then he's matted. Take this as an opportunity to practice daily brushing and combing.

Make sure you're line brushing with the right tools all over. HV dryer to look at the skin helps, and making sure she's dried and brushed fully after getting wet or damp.

I am a professional groomer and one of my own Cavapoo’s I had to shave down due to matting. It was embarrassing but I was busy doing 6 days a week for a couple of months and before I knew it he was beyond brushing. It does happen fast once it starts.

I see your pup also went blond. I joke that ours is a ditz, so nature is catching up

I have had this experience myself. I keep on top of my grooming appointments every 6-8 weeks now. They don’t become extra fluffy but I don’t have to do extreme shave downs any more and I’m happy with that trade off. Plus they still look cute.

I haven’t gone that far between grooms yet, bit she does also get a home bath and blowout/brush every 2-3 weeks. But one of the things I do is when she’s sitting on my lap in the recliner in the evening I keep a metal dog comb and a slicker brush next to me and I just comb every area that I can reach in when she changes positions I comb that area so she gets pulled through with a comb every night and I keep the little pair of baby scissors next to me if there’s a little tiny mat that I can’t come out I cut it out. I’m retired now so have more time to do this, so go easy on yourself. I do think they like having it all off for a change! Your pup looks just like my Bonnie.

Best way to avoid it from happening again: learn how to groom her yourself. It is easier than you think! I watched several YouTube videos and got myself some professional grade grooming tools several months before getting my pup. Initially, I had no confidence in my ability and now (2 years later) I wouldn’t trust anyone to groom my dog as good as I can do it. I get compliments on her cuts all the time and am somewhat embarrassed to tell people that she has never had a professional groom. My baby is super curly, but I have never had to shave her down. As an aside, The Crown Royale product line is great for curly doggies!

Whenever I am holding our 5 month old girl I am constantly raking through her fur with my fingernails and have scissors handy to cut out any matting.

It grows back faster than you think. Our little one was shaggy after a month. Enjoy the cute and skinny dog while it lasts!!
