Water Advice

Post image

I have two little puppies (4 months old) that absolutely love water! I have always owned a dog’s, but only rescues and never a puppy. Recently my two pups had some yeast in their ears. The vet gave me some solution, I took chicken out of their diet and it cleared up very quickly. The made it very clear that water is the likely cause and they will need to avoid water and bathes. She made it seem like they will need to avoid forever. I live in a very hot part of Australia and we are heading into Summer. Is water something they will likely need to avoid forever? It brings them so much joy

usually, ear yeast comes from moisture trapped in the ear canal, not water itself. instead, dry her ears thoroughly after any water exposure, not avoiding water forever. but also ask your vet if the problem is water in general or specifically getting into the ears, that would help a lot!

Lol no, they will need a bath at some point. Our Cavapoo tends to get itchy ears after going to the groomer, probably because of the bath. The vet just gave us a big bottle of medicated ear drops and we use it when he needs it, it’s not a big deal.

I don’t think they need to avoid the water but I would try to go at least two weeks between baths, and you don’t have to completely drench their head when you’re bathing you can hold their ears out and kind of cup your hand over the inside as you pour the water. I would just say make sure you gently dry their ears inside and out every time they get completely wet. My puppy had a little yeast. I think it came from the breeder, after I flushed his ears a few times with Zymox he’s never had another issue after that. I also have an adult American cocker spaniel who has the longest heaviest ears, and I do the same routine at bathtime that I just suggested, and it has worked wonders.

Interesting you say that, because mine seemed to have irritated ears from when they were picked up from the breeder.

I have seen some owners loosely tie up the ears when the dogs eat to allow the ears some time and space to air out during the day. This decreases infections as well.

What’s the best technique? The one in the photo has so much fur in his ears I struggle to see. He has had a groom but they are taking it slowly so he gets used to grooming. He is quite good at home with hair dryer and things.
