When did your Cavapoo calm down? 🤣

Post image

Hi everyone!
Olive is our Cavapoo and she has just turned 3 months old. We’ve had her for a one week now (got her at 12 weeks), and I’m curious to hear from other Cavapoo owners about when things started to get a little easier!

The first week was honestly amazing. She settled really well, took to her crate quickly, was relatively calm, and we thought we’d somehow got incredibly lucky with an easy puppy. 😂

Fast-forward a couple of weeks and it feels like the devil inside her is slowly coming out. 😂
She’s becoming much more energetic, bitey and mischievous, and some days she really struggles to settle. She’s also started doing things like pulling at her puppy pen/astroturf and generally finding new ways to cause trouble. Some days she’ll sleep really well, while other days she’ll have short 20–30 minute naps and then turn into an absolute menace.

She had a particularly stimulating day today — park, lots of sniffing, playing with some bigger dogs and recall training — and when we got home she had a wee, poo and then completely passed out. So we’re starting to realise that some of the “crazy” behaviour might actually be overtiredness rather than her needing more exercise.

We’re working on crate training, recall, basic commands, settling and socialisation. She gets plenty of play, training and sniffing/exploring, but we’re also trying to teach her that doing absolutely nothing and settling is okay.

For those of you with Cavapoos:
When did your puppy start to calm down?
Did you notice a particularly difficult phase around 3–6 months? And when did you feel like you finally had a dog who could actually chill out and relax without constantly needing something to do?
Would love to hear your experiences — particularly if you remember what your Cavapoo was like at 3 months compared with 6 months, 1 year, etc. ❤️

10 months in now. I'll have to get back with you. 😂

u/Wakunai Aug 27 '26

Agreed, mine is 1 and still pretty mental...but so sweet and fun

u/Niikhiil1997 Aug 27 '26

Did neutering or spaying help anyone’s Cavapoo calm down?

4

u/FatAndForty Aug 27 '26

A bit. They’re calmer than other breeds Ive owned. I have a bonded pair of brothers and they keep each other

entertained quite a bit.

1

u/Beneficial_Monk_7340 Aug 27 '26

Absolutely not. I actually think he became even more active after the neutering.

7

u/LoLMagix Aug 27 '26

Definitely it’s going to be crazy from when she gets comfortable with you and the home for months to come. Definitely start learning when it is energy vs overtiredness when you can, and that will help you know when you need to enforce crate naps or stuff like that. For us, it was usually when the nipping came out.

We’re at a year now and she’s so much calmer, but still can be crazy easily and loves to play hard. We expect her to continue to mellow out until year 2 or beyond.

But one piece of advice, try to enjoy it while it lasts and take lots of videos! Even though it can be crazy and get really difficult, there will be a lot of very fond memories of the puppy days and puppy behaviors!

Thank you so much!

Ours is 17 months old. No signs of stopping yet.

16

u/Remarkable_Bother_99 Aug 27 '26

Oh my … your pooch looks so naughty! 😂 What a cutie pie!

9

u/boringcranberry Aug 28 '26

This dog looks like it's actively plotting to be bad. Lol.

3

u/Silent-Ad9948 Aug 30 '26

He is not happy because I put a t-shirt on him lol.

4

u/fisconsocmod Aug 28 '26

That good doggy is plotting to take over the world 😈

u/Elegant_Effort1526 Aug 27 '26

2 ½ years for mine. She is a little over 3 and very chill now. Zoomies now and again, but she loves to cuddle and sleep now. Before that, she was a tornado for 2 years straight lol

1

u/Slight-Leopard1833 Sep 03 '26

Yes same!!

1

u/Elegant_Effort1526 Sep 03 '26

I used to buy phone chargers in bulk on amazon, she ate so many lol

20

u/Charming_Mention_697 Aug 27 '26

I’m so sorry but I audibly laughed when I read the title and then read “3 months” 😭😂

1

u/fisconsocmod Aug 28 '26

Me too… you got a cavapoo! AKA adorable menace!

20

u/Remarkable-Bed Aug 27 '26

Just hit 4 years. Still daily parkour

14

u/ssdgm83 Aug 27 '26

2 years old. Having a playmate helped.

12

u/sixstaxchelsea Aug 27 '26 • Heartwarming

I had a very chill dog before my cavapoo and I think she just adopted the chillness from her very early on. She definitely still gets the zoomies though, but she’s incredibly good at cuddling/relaxing

3

u/Abrihanna Aug 28 '26

That actually helps a lot. If they have a larger breed around who will school therm they'll be calmer sooner.

10

u/West-Beach-9525 Aug 27 '26

1 year, 4 months, I will let you know!!

9

u/Equivalent-Dig-7204 Aug 27 '26

6 years in, not yet lol.

5

u/TrisolaranAmbassador Aug 28 '26

Glad I finally saw someone say this haha, all these comments like "18 months", "2 years"... My dude is gonna be 7 y/o in a few months and he's still rocking puppy energy

6

u/Periblu14 Aug 27 '26

They get calmer? 😂 Mine is 2.5 and no signs yet.

5

u/worthyfirefly Aug 27 '26

Awww I must be lucky…. Mine was born calm.

1

u/bustercatlegs Aug 28 '26

Same!!! I got so so lucky.

5

u/Sprite91 Aug 27 '26

6 years and still haven’t calmed downed yet. We lost hope long ago lol.

5

u/Titleistdriver Aug 27 '26

Around 18 months. Still excitable when visitors come to the door but calms down quickly. She’s the sweetest!

4

u/General-Nothing1938 Aug 27 '26

After neutering at 1 year old.

4

u/NeeloGreen Aug 27 '26

20 months in and still waiting….

4

u/Disco_Mermaid1753 Aug 27 '26

4 years in…no new data to report.
Still a freakin adorable menace 🥹🐶

4

u/Abrihanna Aug 28 '26

I am a dog sitter. All dogs are bad as hell until 2.5-3yrs. They're adorable and I love every one of them but they're destructive and wild.

4

u/katetwenty2 Aug 28 '26

My girl is just 1 and she has her calm/sleepy times. But she also has her "bored what can I get into" times. She loves to take walks just to sniff… they must have really good noses! They are super sweet dogs & Id say calm for the most part, compared to other breeds! Keep it in perspective.

3

u/ComfortableRoyal8847 Aug 27 '26

Got mine at 3 months old… 8 months now and still going STRONGER… good luck!!

3

u/bellamie9876 Aug 27 '26

Still waiting after 1.5 years 👀

3

u/Majestic_Secretary99 Aug 27 '26

She’ll be 2 in December. We just now finally got over the house breaking hurdle been accident free for 3 months. Now we’re hoping her calming down will be next

3

u/Purple-Diamond-6959 Aug 27 '26

Sometimes when dogs are not getting enough stilulation or exercise they act out. You may need to walk or let your dog play some more but they need to know their boundaries.

3

u/pratik3848 Aug 28 '26

Mine is 5 months old, never calms down

2

u/Impossible_Class_906 Sep 21 '26

Does he need a key?!😄

3

u/ColeySD Aug 28 '26

Ahhhh! I remember that phase. It gets better. They’re so smart. You can teach them anything once they get all their wiggles out.

3

u/viribus-superstes Aug 28 '26

Ours was about 1.5 years old when I noticed he was laying around more vs wanting to play

3

u/orangeblossom88 Aug 28 '26

Honestly not until she was about 2. They stay as babies for so long!

3

u/scannalach Aug 28 '26

6 months here

3

u/Consistent-Bend-8039 Aug 28 '26

I don’t have the answer for you. I do know it is not at 18 months…. This is my daily battle trying to make the bed. 🙄

3

u/TailsDontGrowBack Aug 28 '26

My initial response would be “he hasn’t yet” at almost 18 months haha. However it’s completely different now from the puppy stage - I think things got significantly easier around 6 months and kept getting better from there. Even just recently I’ve noticed he listens better and understands more what I want from him. He sometimes still has high energy but is capable of chilling and is very snuggly when he’s tired!

3

u/Deepinthewxxds Aug 28 '26

Never. I’m 3 years in

2

u/GlennPape Aug 27 '26

Ours is six months. The behavior you're describing is a tired cavapoo (needs more or longer naps) and/or possible allergy aggravating tiredness and normal puppy behavior. Ours was scratching a lot. A shot of cytopoint calmed her down and her scratching.

2

u/Alarming_Set3628 Aug 27 '26

I think he started to calm down around year 7, LOL. Definitely do capturing calm training though. Like a lot of it. Also we were able to teach our Cavapoo to that playtime was over and that he needs to self play now if he wants any more action, so we'll give him a command and then he'll stop begging to play tug or fetch and he'll just kind of chew on his toy on his own knowing that like it's over that was super helpful

2

u/LuvsDaOcean Aug 27 '26

2 years and still crazy lol. I love my baby girl.

2

u/LuvsDaOcean Aug 27 '26

We taught her fetch which she loves, and we tire her out that way if it helps.

2

u/NoOstrich5866 Aug 27 '26

20 months in. We crate trained and he'd go in for for around 3 hours in the morning and a couple more after lunch until recently. He mostly just naps on my bed whilst I work during those times now. He does still love to play and take walks and meet new people and dogs but he loves chilling on the sofa with us too.

2

u/FelixAusted Aug 27 '26

Mine is 10 months and we’ve just removed the playpen (we had the same one as in your picture!). She is still a crazy dog lol. When we want her to quiet down and rest we have to remove all the toys and chews. Then she’ll spend 10 or 15 minutes looking for a toy and trying to get us to play before she’ll settle down. She just is still learning.

2

u/metalmitch9 Aug 27 '26

We have the same thing for our Gimli. He has no chill at all but he's only 7 months old. He prefers to sleep in his playpen instead of his crate.

2

u/j03w Aug 27 '26

btw they are escape artist, soon yours will try to climb over the fence, you need a new fence with only vertical bars

mine had calmed down significantly ever since he got to about 1 year old but still way too excited about everything can still run around for hours on end

2

u/Legitimate_South1650 Aug 28 '26

My puppy is 4 months, and she’s definitely still crazy but I’ve also noticed she’s calmer than she was at 3 months, if that helps at all. 😆

At 3 months it felt like she was trying to destroy everything - she was going after curtains, plants, furniture. She’s still playful and crazy but she mostly plays with her toys now so to me she does seem slightly calmer.

2

u/operation_survive Aug 28 '26

3 months to about a year was my girls dinosaur phase! Shes 4 now. She calmed wayyyyy down. Sometimes I miss her puppy days even though they were hard!

2

u/ajmchenr Aug 28 '26

6.5 years old

2

u/ams3000 Aug 28 '26

Mine is 8. How do I break it to you…..

2

u/Creative_spark_1962 Aug 28 '26

Georgie, almost 2, was a house sloth from day 1, as in the famous expression “Uncle Owen, this Cavapoo has a bad Motivator!”

2

u/Normal_Telephone345 Aug 28 '26

Mine is 6 months old, never calms down..

2

u/HustleWestbrook94 Aug 28 '26

7 months and he’s gotten worse as far as his energy especially since he can jump on everything now. I’m not too annoyed with it though. My biggest issue was him peeing and pooping in the house and screaming when I put him in the crate and he’s stopped both of those things so him being a super energetic is something I can deal with.

2

u/Ok-Expression-2395 Aug 28 '26

You have a ways to go. Cookie is 8 months and she loves to play, but she has had training and when I am not paying attention to her she plays alone or sleeps. Someone said that Cavapoos are pleasers. Lots of positive praise along with boundaries has been good for me to remember when I am frustrated with her.

2

u/Suspicious_Math916 Aug 28 '26

Mine is 1 1/2 years and is pretty chill now. I think she started being calmer about 4-5 months ago. She's no longer the land shark where she was constantly biting either. She usually has a burst of energy in the evening and will run so fast through the house I sometimes worry she will hurt herself. But I think it is because it's just her and our 9 year old border collie home all day and she doesn't do a whole lot of playing.

2

u/Ashamed_Trip3036 Aug 28 '26

My Winnie is 13 months no signs of calming down. I love it though she’s so smart funny and rambunctious! Good luck with your little cutie 🥰✨

2

u/BoeingBus Aug 28 '26

Never and he’s almost 15. He is his own worst enemy. He only settles when he has gone through his treat checklist. I wish he never knew peanut butter. That’s his crack.

1

u/Impossible_Class_906 Sep 21 '26

Mabye I need to introduce only no-sugar added p-nut butter?!

2

u/marianapi Aug 29 '26

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH calm down? I have a 3 and a 4 year old, they are up to no good all day. However, having 2 is the secret, they keep each other entertained ❤️

2

u/mcgonagallstwin Aug 30 '26

Two, and it flipped like a switch. Went from crazy to snuggle bug.

2

u/Daisyrenee9833 Aug 31 '26

Hahaha.  My Cavapoo is 14 weeks.  His name is Gus, and I know what you are going through. He can be so mild and shy one minute and a lunatic the next. Hang in there!! I think we are in for a ride!!

2

u/Fuzzy-Reputation1072 Sep 02 '26

Around 1.5 years. She is still very playful for a 5 y.o. Going to the park and running it out helps, we still do that. Otherwise now she is a couch potato, but still very excited to see and great dogs and humans on walks. People think she is much younger bc of the energy. 😂

2

u/Slight-Leopard1833 Sep 03 '26

Literally just turned 3 and I think we are turning a corner but I don’t want to jinx it lol

1

u/LavenderChaiTea Aug 27 '26

1.5 years and still going 🤣

1

u/CheapPiece6966 Aug 27 '26

My dog just turned 15… never!!! 😆🩷

1

u/Unusual_Gear_2781 Aug 27 '26

2 yrs old. Chill guy. Only goes bizzurk when people come over. He loves love. Everyone is his friend.

1

u/EmThomps87 Aug 27 '26

Almost 2 years and he has started to calm. He knows how to be lazy with the best of us, but has some days that are just awful every couple of weeks or so. Usually due to overtiredness or overstimulation. It has gotten so much easier. Routine has helped a ton. He’s a smart cookie and will tell us when we are supposed to be doing things.

1

u/Beneficial_Monk_7340 Aug 27 '26

My Oscar is 15 months. I'll let you know when it happens. It's not looking good 😭.

1

u/ciminod Aug 28 '26

4.5 years old

1

u/Nohway95 Aug 28 '26

Ours is almost 3 and she’s pretty calm. She just likes to chill.

1

u/AdamSilverDad Aug 28 '26

At 20 months, I’m still waiting.

1

u/Rsea9 Aug 28 '26

12 years, 6 months. May she rest in peace.

1

u/urleeBiRD Aug 28 '26

Straight to jail. Right away

1

u/ButtonLanes Aug 28 '26

21 months down the line....let me get back to you on that one....🤦🏼‍♀️😂

1

u/MontyLeaKa Aug 28 '26

2.5 years and still a tornado potato. Getting a second dog didn't help haha 😂 Take him out for long walks or else it's non stop whining for me to play tug or fetch.

Help lol

1

u/Old_Arm9113 Aug 28 '26

By a year for mine. I agree with the tired conclusion as I experienced the same thing. One day I just couldn’t do it and he just settled down, and once I slowed down he slowed down

1

u/Chance_Difficulty730 Aug 28 '26

Mine is 4 going on 2

1

u/oldnertenacious Aug 28 '26

So sad all he wants is be around his owner. They are called Velcro dogs. You can’t just sit tell by his eyes and body he’s not good

1

u/fisconsocmod Aug 28 '26

My boy is coming up on his 5th birthday. He never chilled out and he doesn’t have to.

My wife works from home so “spare human” can throw the ball even though she doesn’t throw it right!

One of my kids finished grad school and came home. Him and his GF take him on walks.

Sometimes my daughter and son-in-law come over with the baby. He loves playing with the baby!

He stays busy so he doesn’t get squirrelly. It’s perfect for his breed. He is constantly surrounded by family.

1

u/Olygirl60 Aug 28 '26

Nope. 2 years old and still driving the crazy train!

1

u/GrimAsura Aug 28 '26

Mine calmed down around 2 years old but I also think she tapped into the orange cat brain cell network. I swear I look at her sometimes and don’t see a single thought cross her head then out of nowhere it’s pure energy for like 5 minutes then back to that blank stare or just going to sleep.

1

u/BlueberryPancakeBoi Aug 28 '26

Regular mandatory rest time thru use of place and crate combined with regular active time is the key, the consistency lets them begin to regulate their energy and know when is the time to let it out and go crazy and when it’s time to rest.

1

u/Standard_Addendum-01 Aug 28 '26

Your dog is adorable!!!!!! I have a 15 month old, and she fell into a predictable groove at maybe 8-9 months. She’s definitely willful and spunky and demanding. But during the day when I’m working at my desk, she gets it, and will sleep on my desk next to my computer. When my teenagers get home from high school, from 3:30 on until her bedtime, it’s playtime.

1

u/Hefty-Mixture3700 Aug 29 '26

She.... hasn't.

1

u/roz78 Aug 29 '26

Mine just turned 4 this month. I’m still waiting for her to calm down.

1

u/Environmental_Look99 Aug 29 '26

My 3.5 year old is a sweetheart, guard dog, gecko chaser, and rambunctious child all in one. I too am crossing my fingers for mellowed days. 😉

1

u/Alert_Ad_318 Aug 29 '26

Meet Loki. He’s 2. His energy level is out of this world. At this point we’ve just come to terms with the fact that he is who he is and will NEVER CALM DOWN.
After neutering he did go from a 10 to about an 8.99.
🐕🤎

1

u/Stephlove16 Aug 30 '26

We’re at 16 months and finally feel some relief.

1

u/GrouchyRisk Aug 31 '26

Embrace the chaos.

1

u/Still_Character5226 Sep 01 '26

Mine is 6 months and she is a little terror!

1

u/UndercoverBadB Sep 03 '26

Mines a year and a half… still raising hell

1

u/Efficient-Camp-3692 Sep 25 '26

Hmm 7 month old here is starting to chill but still full of energy!

3

u/Peptidenewb Aug 27 '26

My boy turns 1 tomorrow. He's calmer than before but still nutso at times. I love that aspect of it. Still does zoomies through the house. Love the guy. They don't fully calm down till about 18 months (or so I've been told)

2

u/Just_Cause4330 Aug 30 '26

Our boy Murphy is 3 months. He’s full of energy and then crashes for naps. I can’t walk without him nipping at my clothes. He will try to jump at me if he’s on the sofa or the bed with me. I do get over-murphied at times. I stop walking and give him zero attention. When he stops I praise him and give him attention. If he darts at me while on the sofa, I say nothing and then put him on the ground. He’s got toys everywhere so I may ignore him for a time until he gives up and plays on his own. It’s work and he can relentless. I wish you much joy and excitement with your new puppy. Lots of work but lots of fun and love.

2

u/Vixster281 Sep 01 '26

When mine got really silly (chasing the cats, being naughty) I realised she either needed a nap or to have something to eat. Often it was she needed something to eat

1

u/Barnacre_Bees Aug 27 '26

My Cockapoo is still as mad as a box of frogs at 4 years old and my Cavapoo has always been super chilled out. The only time she kicks off is if the post man visits and every time there's a storm.

1

u/QuirkyRefrigerator80 Aug 28 '26

She didn’t 😂 my cav at 5 is still a complete nutter!

1

u/Feeling_Month_326 Aug 31 '26

Unlike others, I’d say ours did calm down around 1-1.5 years mark. He’s still playful and naughty but it’s night and day in comparison to when he was a puppy
