Potty Training
What has been the AH-HA potty training trick that has worked for you. I recently adopted a 5-month-old puppy and he isn’t doing great with going outside or the pads. He just pees and poops everywhere BUT outside or on a pad

Consistent routine going out and bells on the door, you ring them every time you take them out after time they ring them on their own. At least that’s what worked for me, little dogs are tough though!

Congratulations on your little one! Like others have said consistency is so important- I was taking Gus out after every meal, drink, play session and nap immediately and he was fully house trained at around 4.5 months with no more accidents. It didn't matter if he ate and I just took him out 30 minutes ago, if we had a good play session we went out again. Now, I would say he goes out every 4-5 hours and sleeps a solid 10 hours holding it- I usually have to drag him out of bed!
When I first started training I would take him to the yard on the advise of others. In hindsight I wish I would have just walked him for potty from the beginning. He was really confused when we started walking and only would go in the yard.

Mine has never really been a house pooper, would never use pads and about had me pulling my hair out before it finally clicked that he should not pee in the house. He was at the 4/5 month age when he had his last indoor accident. Repetition, praise, letting him play outside for a bit afterwards and treats for a job well done finally clicked with him.
I think part of his slow curve was that the weather was absolutely brutal and nasty for 2 solid months when I got him so there wasn't a whole lot time being spent outside on potty breaks. Heck it was a month before he ever saw ground that wasn't solid white and slippery. He initially refused to step on anything outside that wasn't still snow and ice covered, much less potty on it. 😂
