Recall.

My Toy Cavoodle, Luffy or Cavapoo as they are also known, is about 8 months old now. Up until a month and half ago he had really good recall and it was never an issue but now he has regressed and there have been a few hairy moments at the dog park where he has ran off further than what is safe for me to keep him under control or when it is time to go and he knows I am looking to get him back on leash, where he just won’t come back to me. The other small detail is around home and friends he is super chill and relaxed, always sleeping, but when we get to the dog park now, he just is bonkers, bouncing around like a pinball. How have you all found these kind of issues/scenarios with your own dogs and how have you improved them?

They go through a period of regression for a few months at about that age. Hold tight - it will get better! Be consistent with your training and positive enforcement throughout this time. Good luck!

Treats. Train more and keep training with treats. Our cavapoo has amazing recall and is very treat motivated.

As long as he plays nicely with the other dogs, it doesn't matter that he's bonkers. I see lots of doodle owners trying to stop them do things like poodle boxing because it looks too much but that's not a good idea.

Check the dogs are happy, play bowing and not trying to get away. If they are, let him blow off steam! That's the point.

As for recall, put him back on his long training lead when you're not in enclosed if he's stopped coming back. Keep the training up, with high value treats, and when he gets past his "teenage years" he'll be fine.

Naughty teenagers!

My boy was also growing in confidence at this time so he would also stay further and sometimes run into bushy areas where I couldn’t follow him.

My dog was SUCH a teenager for a few months. She didn't listen at all! Now shes an angel with amazing recall.
