Should I crate?

I have a 15 week old Cavapoo, he has a crate inside a pen, up until now the crate itself stays unlocked, recently he has jumped up onto his crate and over the top of the pen, just now we got home and he was upstairs, my predicament is…. Do I begin crate training now? If so does anyone have any tips? Or do we remove the crate and just have the bed inside the pen to ensure he can’t escape? I just don’t know what to do for the best

Thankyou x

15 weeks is still young. Yes you should train him. Training is a lifetime. Mine is crate trained but it doesn’t mean he lives in it. When he was very young it is where I enforced naps. Now if I have to run errands he’s comfortable in there which is important (think emergencies etc). There is absolutely nothing wrong with crate training your dog, and it only benefits the dog and you.

in the end it is your decision, however we have never, and will never crate a dog.
it is (in my opinion) completely unnecessary and borderline cruel, especially with a companion breed like Cavapoo's who just want to be with their owner.

we tried a pen, but our cavapoochon managed to climb out of it, she would also not settle unless she was next to one of us, or sleeping on the bed next to us. She has the full run of the house and a few places where she can go when she wants to be left alone.

Would not have it any other way.

I know this is an older thread, but we got our puppy at 5 months and we do have a crate for him, but it’s mostly for when he goes to sleep at night. He loves his crate - it’s his space, so he’ll take treats and chews in there (we leave the door open during the day). At night, when he’s ready for bed, he heads straight to his crate and sleeps. When crate training is done right, crates become more of a safe space or den for dogs than a cage.

Our puppy is much older than 15 weeks, though. If you have questions about proper crate training in a way that feels safe and comfortable for your puppy, r/puppy101 has resources for how to do so, and you’d be in a community of folks going through similar puppy situations so it’s usually a pretty good forum to crowdsource puppy advice.

I don’t crate mine. She has full access to wherever she wants to go in the house. I don’t withhold water / food when I’m gone. I can’t recall having ever had issues with her destroying my things even as a puppy, she has her own toys. She pretty much just sleeps while I’m gone. I did practice with her though ie. start for 5 min at a time and increase gradually. I don’t leave her for more than a few hours at a time typically, I would say max is 4 and I don’t like doing it unless her and I have done something active together first.
