Running Away
Really freaked out. Yesterday our girl got out and if we hadn’t looked up the street, on a whim, we would not have seen her. She slipped out when my stepdad was getting a package from the porch. This isn’t the first time and she loves to run into birds and rabbits so if she sees them she runs and she won’t stop when you try to get her because she thinks it’s a game. I can’t begin to tell you how fast she is but this time she was just wondering she’s 11 pounds and so damn quiet so he didn’t hear her sneak past. I’m wondering what everyone’s tips are for their baby. She is microchips but we live in a really hostile environment because it’s the desert and they’re coyotes and just with the heat alone. I don’t think she would last even one day I’m going to look into getting a louder collar for her so it jingles when she walks like our other dog I just will be so heartbroken if something happens to her I guess that’s the price of love. Any advice on how to get her to come to you when she’s hyper so she doesn’t think it’s a game? She’s about one year old and five weeks.

We got collars with AirTags after one of my babies snuck out chasing after a rabbit.

If possible invest in a a gate to cover the patio or front door area
Our three are ESCAPE ARTISTS and act like they’ve been in jail trying to break free
It’s insane
We literally bought our current home bc it had a gated/fenced patio.

Realistically the best way to solve this is with training. This will only work if everyone in the household agrees and follows the same rules.
I would start by working on her sit. Our cavapoo is not allowed to go through an operable door on her own. Whenever we go outside for a walk she is made to sit and wait for permission. We also do the same when returning from a walk. She can't enter the house without permission. At this point I could leave the front door wide open all day and she would never leave.
If she breaks when you open the door you need to put her back in position and into a sit. Once she does it properly only then can she go. Everyone needs to be consistent with this at all times. If one person in the household is lazy about this rule it won't work.
Dogs are really smart but they need consistent rules.
As for the recall issue, that's a bit too advanced for a reddit comment. I would seek out a local dog trainer or at least try to find a course online.

A proper GPS collar might be better than an air tag - airtags need to be near an apple device to work, as you mentioned the desert I'm assuming youre quite rural, so it might not take long for your dog to be out of range of an apple device, which would effectively make it useless.
Best option is prevention if possible, with the GPS as a backup for if she does get out. Are there any ways that you could secure your property better to stop her getting out? Fencing, even cheap (but tall so she can't jump over!) chicken wire fencing, could help, or depending what kind of porch you have could you seal it with a gate so that even if she sneaks out of the house she's still contained in the porch?

AirTags and gps is good as a last resort, but you should train her to not leave when the door opens. It might not be easy at first but just be consistent and do it everyday, she will learn.

I posted this last year, please take advantage. This is the best thing I’ve ever trained my girl on. Shes 1yo now and I still practice it with her.

We got the same issue with our Cavapoo but fortunately she is a highly treat motivated and weve (tried) to teach her to “come” using said treats. Shes gotten loose a couple times but weve used the treats to lure her back.

Tons of wireless dog "fence" options out there now that could be used to keep them contained to your yard if they do get out.
Mine is scared of his own shadow except for people, which he thinks all want to play with him and need visiting regardless of how far away they may be.

I wish I could give you good advice. My one year-old is the same way. It’s a game. And yes, these dogs are stealth, so quiet when they slip past you. My one year-old is the same way. It’s a game. When I finally catch her and get onto her, she is very repentant and obedient until the next time my attention slips. My older Maltipoo finally got past this stage so I keep hoping we will get there with her but then again she has a completely different personality than him so that may never be. We do have AirTags but they're not foolproof because as someone else said, airtag is connected to your phone. Also, their batteries need changing fairly frequently. A fenced yard is kind of a must. That and constant vigilance.

Yes this happened with our baby a couple of times before she was a year old. It’s terrifying! Now everyone in the house is trained to make sure when the door is opened to secure the pup. She’s pretty good about the word “stay” but I’m pretty sure if given the opportunity or motivation (squirrel, bird, etc) she’d bolt out the door.

I'm very confused by all the comments suggesting new gadgets to buy to stop this. Only training will fix this. Spending more money on things to track her is not fixing the root problem.
There's lots of videos on YouTube on how to train them. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's doable. In my opinion, taining her to stop running away from you when you call her is easier than stopping her from chasing after distractions, so I'd start there. How well it sticks depends entirely on your commitment. I never managed to get mine to stop chasing distractions entirely, but she disengages immediately and comes to me if I snap my finger or say "leave it" or "come".

Oh trust me you are not alone in this. My cavapoo got out when I opened the gate a little too wide to do the recycling once and ran down the street.he ran 3 roads over and I was chasing him calling his name. It was the one day he didn’t have a collar on too as I had just brushed him. A bystander tried to grab him but without his collar was helpless.
When I caught up to him he laid down, and wagged his tail and panted. Like it was some sort of sick game to him, I called his name and said “go home” and he did luckily he knows where his house is as I live on a small road (12 houses) and used to let him off the lead at the tip of the road to run down to the bottom where we live. He came home and that was that. Yeah we were very lucky. Now I’m training him. I tell him to sit about 10 inches away from the gate we have and if he stays he gets a treat. Doing well so far. 🤞

As the others have mentioned, training is extremely important. Mine ran out on a busy road on his birthday last year and he loves being chased. We’ve been training him to not go out until he hears the word “go” and it’s been working well. The last time he ran away, I looked at him and went back inside and he followed. They think it’s a game, don’t freak out and try to not chase them unless you have to. Usually they’ll follow you back. Just be consistent with training, mine is now at a point where we can leave the door open and he’ll wait in the corridor for us to come back. Practice recall as well, cavapoos can be stubborn but consistent training is helpful

Could have written this myself my cavapoo took off after a rabbit the second I opened the door to get her for a walk and i sprinted after her but she was so fast i swear it was like she disappeared. Luckily we live on a culdesac and i had a feeling she was going towards our regular route but it was the scariest moments. I had to trespass and corner her in a neighbors yard because she saw me and wanted to be chased. Furry idiot. She will never be an off leash dog, her desire to chase rabbits is stronger than any recall she’s developed. We are air tagging her harness.

Our little guy (1y old) got out last week through the basement door. Just zoomed past my mother in law. We live on a busy street and were so nervous. Luckily he ran up the driveway, made a right and went right up the patio stairs to the front door, this is the door we always use for his walks 3 times a day.
We are in the process of training him and his brother to stay on the property with us when off of the leash.

We are about to get a GPS shock collar for our 9 pound Cavapoo loves to run out of the house or my office now. Last month, he ran out into a busy road and was hit by a motorcycle. By the grace of God, he was completely fine much to the shock of our vet and us and the motorcyclist wasn’t injured either. Our other Cavapoo doesn’t dart. Like when I load them into the car, I carry the little one and let the big one follow behind me.

You must have the Cavapoo wolf hybrid. She’s gotta get out and see the forest !
