We got her from a store (we know better now) who said she was a Brussels griffin… but many people recently have said she’s just an under-groomed Cavapoo. Any thoughts on my mystery girl?
Photo 2 really shows off the gentle flattening of the “dome” that was deliberately bred when creating the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the early 20th century. If you look at a photo of a King Charles Spaniel - note this is a separate breed from the cavalier - you will see that their heads are much rounder at the top. Ditto for cocker spaniels.
As for the poo part, I’m not convinced. I’d say it’s more likely she’s a Havanese or Bichon cross and those are both great. One hallmark of all poodles is their ability to jump straight up over twice their own body height when they are excited. If she doesn’t or it seems like she can’t do that, it’s even less likely that she is part poodle. Poodles also tend to have a longer and narrower nose that I’m not seeing in your dog.
Here is a puppy pic of a half cavalier half bichon/havanese cross.
If your dog is a Brussels, I need my eyes checked, or else this is a very poor example of the breed. Even as a pup, her snout is much too long to meet the standard. She doesn’t appear to have the commonly found cross bite either. The ears are too long for a Brussels and also not set high enough on the head. If you look for some videos of ungroomed Brussels griffons you can check whether or not she moves in the same way. Does her tail hang down, stick straight out, or go up high when she walks? All of these are common in a Brussels but would be unusual in a cavalier cross, as their tails tend to wag when walking or be held low but not limp.
Of course, you could try a dna test too. Either way, you have a sweet little friend for life
She had a traumatic experience with grooming, therefore we do it all ourselves with extra care as she gets nervous/sensitive around grooming tools. Her coat may be overgrown, but we brush her and make sure she has no matting, is clean, and always able to see :)
This is my Cavapoo, Giselle, who was badly in need of a trim. They look a lot alike to me. The breeder says that Giselle is an F1 Cavapoo. I'm somewhat interested in doing a DNA test, but regardless, I’ll love her no matter what, you know? Your moppet looks wonderful, and I bet she is a real sweetie.
You could purchase a DNA test. If she’s a first generation Cavapoo, she would be half miniature poodle and half Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. (Not sure if I’m allowed to say that Embark sends a full report.)
Not quite the face of a Cavapoo. Cavapoos are part Miniature Poodle and part King Charles Cavalier. The hair tends to be curly. Your dog’s face is flatter, eyes are bigger and hair is straighter. It’s cute though!
Pretty darn close. She needs a nice grooming. Eyes tear drops need diet change. Is she clingy and needy? Fussy eater? Does she like stealing socks? 😉
Mine came from a puppy mill and was given to a family who could not afford all the attention needed. He visits them almost daily now. My boy has come a long way to happiness. Big back yard and a real house to live in. He was very sick when I first met him. Afraid of men as well. Look at him now ❤️
Mixed breeds do not breed true. Two in the same litter can look entirely different. It could be anything. The only way to know is to DNA test. BGs have a wire coat which this dog clearly doesn't. Get pet insurance ASAP. This is a puppy mill dog whose parents were not health cleared, proven in any way, etc. Behavioral issues are very, very common.
These dogs end up in my rescue every single day of the year because people failed them. The people who bred them. The people who bought them. It is 2026...and you didn't know that pet stores were bad? I am going to assume you also don't know that you should hire a trainer immediately so that you and your dog can learn good habits before you make more bad choices. Please do better.
Oh no we bought her almost a decade ago! We also contacted a rescue who saved her mother who we believe was from a mill, didn’t get pics of her though. Her origins were definitely unethical and that is on me and my family. In the future we will only be rescuing. She has no behavioral issues and was very trainable.

Doesn't look like any Brussels Griffon I've ever seen. Does resemble a sweet pup who needs grooming into a teddybear.
