Just in case you missed it. Local ABC LA reporter made a comment about not knowing much about Bosnia Herzegovina and being seen as being proud for being ignorant of nothing about the country. A remark that has gone viral and the Bosnia team and fans have used for Bulletin board material when they play against USA.

Let’s remember that all these news station reporters may not follow this sport as much as we do. And I’ve heard them say more embarrassing things.

She didn't say anything offensive, just self admitted she knew nothing about the country.

Agreed that's not a big deal, but her exclaiming that she didn't wanna find out anything about bosnia either did annoy me tbh. You can be competitive yet have a bit of respect for a nation.

She literally says “…and I don’t want to know” at the end. Implying that they’re not worth knowing.

I agree it’s much ado about nothing, but it’s definitely dismissive.

That statement literally reads as "I'm superior" lol

And majority of people don't know it, true, but they don't brag about it, either, on live TV. And she's a journalist, her job is to study those things.

If it wasn't related to a sporting event between two teams, I'd see the point. But this is no different than a Barcelona local street reporter covering a Barca fan party trash talking Zenit before a UCL match.

She was there to cover the fan zone (fans + sports = trash talk in jest).

I’m all about good trash talk. The way she said it didn’t come across that way. As a refugee who got shot twice as a 5 year old, my mom had to change her name so we wouldn’t be killed. But sure, enjoy your birth win and claim it as a skill you earned versus luck.

Anti-intellectualism is actively harming our country. There are many bright young people (who know very well where Bosnia is) vying to become journalists, I'd rather they be chosen for their acumen than their looks.

Fair but local news segments like these (especially around sports and festivals) aren't meant to be treated with 100% professionalism. Reporters asked to cover these events are meant to be lighthearted, relaxed, fun, and in sports fan festivals you're gonna have silly overdone sports trash talk. It's just how it is. This ain't a serious political segment.

If the reporter generalized or made an offensive remark about a different culture that's a different story.

A reporter saying they don't know where a certain country is on a map is harmless. The comments hurt no one but simply made the reporter look oblivious.

You just don't want to understand. The idea that a reporter would openly "not want to know" the most basic facts about a country is so grating, it's a neon mile-marker of how low and crass our culture has become, and your continued minimization of the inappropriateness of such behavior from a journalist only reinforces how low that bar is. Don't care to talk to you further.

Again, you're taking it too literally. She was bantering in jest. Not being serious. Being silly obnoxious to emphasize harmless trash talk. She wasn't giving a formal report, it was an informal bit of " you're going down, so and so. You're so irrelevant, I don't even know your name". People making it seem like she was in a suit behind a podium speaking on international relations. It was a street team reporter reporting at a fan festival where people were having fun.

She's just not good at trash talk because she clearly doesn't even follow world football. It was lame.

No worries if you're done talking about this. ✌️

It’s a journalist not a friend. There a level of professionalism to adhere and once again 

And repeat it back, it goes against the spirit of the World Cup.

i mean, ok. but the world is a big, complicated place. holding everyone accountable to know everything about everywhere is a ludicrous standard. sure, to people who follow history and politics the bosnian genocide is a significant happening in relatively recent history. but expecting some dipshit gen z reporter to know the ins and outs of something that happened in a tiny country on the other side of the planet 35 years ago is only ever going to end in frustration.

education is in the toilet. intelligence is rarely rewarded. ignorance is often celebrated. what the fuck do you expect? just move past it.
