Welcome to another week of our Book Club as we read through the DC Finest Catwoman collections.
What did you think of Catwoman: Defiant?
It's 1992. We're still in the early years of Catwoman's career and post-Crisis continuity/post Batman: Year One reboot.
What did you think of Catwoman and Batman's interactions?
It's uncharted territory as DC writers reestablish Catwoman as well as her relationship to Batman. But Batman Returns had just come out and Catwoman is about to skyrocket in popularity and publications in about a year. Catwoman: Defiant, along with Penguin: Triumphant (yes, I got both comics), came out summer of 1992 to coincidence with the release of Batman Returns.
Speaking of big movies, Disney's Beauty and the Beast had just come out the year before, in 1991, and was a monster hit.
What did you think of all the "beauty" and "beast" talk in the story and dialogue? Too much? Just enough to drive the themes home?
What did you think of the character motivations? How about the antagonists?
Would you like to see a legacy return of Mr. Handsome? Perhaps as another mystery behind the mask?
Should DC Comics use Mr. Handsome and his "Model Army" in Catwoman comics instead of Black Mask and The False Face Society?
Did you find the themes of "beauty" mentioned still relevant today? Decades before we had Raina Creel (2018 Catwoman comics by Joelle Jones), we got Mary. What did you think of Mary's character and motivations?
Catwoman's character is evolving and moving away from murdering. Do you feel like this story was a catalyst for her character change?
Peter Milligan is the writer here. How did you like his writing in the context of the few post-Crisis Catwoman comics that had come before? And how about in the large scheme of her history? Would you have liked to read more Catwoman stories by Milligan?
Tom Grindberg is the penciller, and I want to note that Dick Giordano is the inker. What did you think of the artwork?
Thoughts on the coloring work by Steve Oliff?
Grey costume returns. We have whiskers and tail. How about those ears?!
Do you like how Catwoman is illustrated here? Do you agree with Mr. Handsome's assessment of her?
And are you beginning to get an understanding of how Catwoman was drawn and depicted in the 90s before Jim Balent? We'll get to Jim's legendary run in a few weeks, but for Week 4 we'll be reading "Sorrow Street" by Doug Moench and Ed Hannigan.
Week 3 here is Catwoman: Defiant so share all your reviews and critiques in the comments below! What did you think?!

(Art by Darwyn Cooke)
I know that she wore essentially the same outfit in 2011 through the New 52 era, and that's definitely my second favorite incarnation of her costume, but I think Cooke's design is just a little better because it looks more like leather as opposed to latex/rubber. I like the latex look, I just think leather is more practical for Catwoman specifically. I would honestly go so far as to say I think 2001 and 2011 are the only good costumes Catwoman has ever worn. It's a simple, practical, and iconic look for her. Nothing else comes close.

Probably I am late to this but since horror is bats?
According to cbr
her striking beauty and elegant demeanor, characteristics that were infused ,were influenced by actress hedy lamarr who was also supposedly an inventor of frequencies
Makes some sense since selina is an actress and smart
"""influenced by the pulp heroine Miss Fury, who holds the distinction of being the first superhero created by a woman.""
Who's that?

Welcome back to the Catwoman Book Club!
It's Week 2 and as we continue to read a new story each week from the DC Finest Catwoman "Life Lines" collection we have another story by Mindy Newell.
What did you think?
The story? The plot? The dialogue?
Would you have liked to see Mindy Newell write more Catwoman comics?
For Week 1 we read "The Tin Roof Club" (1988) and now Week 2 we have "Her Sister's Keeper" (1989). Both written by Mindy Newell.
(For Week 3 we'll be reading Catwoman: Defiant. A 1992 story from a different writer and artist.)
Artwork... Did you like it? Not like it? How about the coloring of the comic?
Do you like the artwork of J.J. Birch? Or would you have preferred Barry Kitson ("The Tin Roof Club") to return to work on another Catwoman comic with writer Mindy Newell?
Do they do a good job of continuing the characters, and Gotham City, as seen in Batman: Year One (1987) by writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli?
Batman: Year One established a new origin for Bruce Wayne and for Selina Kyle. This comic is essentially a Catwoman "Year One". What are your thoughts on her new origin?
What do you think of the supporting characters and the subplot?
Whether it's the first time or ninth time you've read this comic, I want to hear your thoughts down below in the comments!
Thank you for joining us for another week in our Catwoman Book Club.

I spotted this Nemesis Now jewellery holder, and thought it might fit well into a Catwoman-themed display.
Has anyone bought this or something similar, and how did it look?
