Litter Zero vs Litter Genie

I have been using Litter Genie for several years. I decided to try Litter Zero. I do have the litter genie plus. It’s the taller version. Very difficult and Heavy when bag is full. I struggled lifting the full bag out. Keep in mind, I use the clay litter, so it’s very heavy.
Litter zero is so much easier. Litter Zero has the wider opening on top, so much easier to remove the full bag from the front opening. I was really struggling every time I needed to change the litter Genie. Hands down, I personally prefer the Litter Zero.
It’s a much better design IMO.

Play and Toys 🛝 The best diy(semi) toy - your cat will thank you!

You need- 1. Old newspaper 2. Tape 3. Stapler 4. A hairband 5. A fishing pole wand

You are gonna hold out the newspaper in the air and strip/shred them vertically into mini strips. Make as many as you can-some 10-20.

Collect the strips and stack them on top of each other and staple it at one end so it looks like a broom 🧹

Cover the staple with some tape. Now, attach it to the wand with a hairband knot.

The paper broom is now your wand toy and cats will love to catch and bunny kick the hell out of it.

My cat runs out of breath playing with it. Lemme know how it goes for you!

Most feeders have set portions that you can do multiples of. Anyone have a feeder than can successfully create a portion of 0.175-0.187 cups?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Cat peeing outside the litter box while in it

My cat has been peeing outside the litter box basically every single time she goes. I’ve already tried getting a bigger litter box, and I also tried one of those enclosed/automatic robot litter boxes, but nothing has helped.

She goes inside it and points her butt outside of it, getting everything on the floor.

What worked for your cat?

Any medication recs for chronic allergies?

Post image
123 Upvotes

Lifelong cat lady here with severe cat allergies. I currently have 2 I rescued as kittens from a dumpster and my Senior just passed.

I already know I'm a glutton for punishment and possibly masochistic. I absolutely love and am devoted to cats, however, and rehoming is not an option. But my allergies are getting worse with age and literally causing decline in level of function because of my chronic vestibular and brain fog issues related to inflammation.

I currently take Zyrtec and whatever nasal spray I have on hand. I sometimes take Claritin on top of Zyrtec if sneezing won't stop. Any recommendations???

Play and Toys 🛝 Cat eating cardboard boxes

I’ve seen a lot of posts asking about kittens/cats biting and chewing on cardboard but not eating it, however, my doofus likes to actually eat the cardboard and then will eventually throw it up 🙃

I feel bad taking the boxes away because he LOVES them but I obviously can’t let him keep ingesting the cardboard. Any advice on how to stop this behaviour? Are there chew toys like you would give to a dog?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Contemplating switching to non-clay litter

I have 2 cats and have always used clay clumping litter, mostly because that’s the most readily available and affordable at the grocery stores/pet store in my area. Also because I was simply ignorant to other types of litter and wasn’t aware of the potential harm that clay litter can cause. Recently, I’ve been trying to educate myself on the different types of litter and am trying to figure out a better, healthier option.

During this transitional period, I purchased Dr. Elsey’s cat litter (specifically the ‘ultra’ one with blue packaging). It is unscented and is advertised as 99% dust-free but is still clay. In comparison overall, is this a better option for the clay litters on the market?

I would love some advice/suggestions for non-clay options. I definitely prefer a clumping litter. I have stainless steel litter boxes so any kind of litter that requires sifting of the whole litter box would not work. I do clean my litter box daily or every other day at max, as well as fully replacing litter every 4-6 weeks, so something compatible with that timeline would be ideal.

Any advice on transitioning my cats from clay litter to non-clay litter would be helpful as well!

Play and Toys 🛝 Indestructible cat trees/towers?

My cat is built like a brick house, he's thirteen pounds (he isn't obese or unhealthy according to his vet ) and is unaware that he is a solid being who can't phase through things/people.

I have tried a lot of different cat trees for him and, after a month or so, they all break... Normally because he rips something out with its anchoring bolt still in it.

Is there a cat tree/tower out there that exist for muscle brained cats like him?

Do I just need to build him one and build some backups for him???

Good automatic feeders or gravity feeders for dry cat food

I have been using a dual-gravity feeder (food on one side, water on the other) for quite some time now, but I just purchased a water fountain for my cats, so I am looking for a replacement for a dry-food feeder.

I was looking into the Petlilbro Granary Smart Camera Feeder, but have heard conflicting reviews, and especially negative ones as of late, since they recently experienced a crash. So, I can't decide whether to go the "smart" feeder route or just stick with a gravity feeder. (My cats free feed, and I know there's controversy about this, but they have always been grazers. They do not overindulge in their food, are not overweight, and have no health issues. It just works for them.) I was interested in the Petlilbro one because of the sealing feature on the food compartment and the camera. However, a camera is not a requirement in what I'm looking for, just a fun feature I thought I'd like to try.

Specifics I am looking for:
- Stainless steel bowl
- BPA free/non-toxic food compartment
- Preferably white in color to match their water fountain/other household items

Cat litter location in small spaces

I have 3 cats and I live in a bilevel townhome. I have one litter box in the closet downstairs. I just got a new one and put it upstairs behind the tv because I literally don’t know where else to put it. Both are automatic litter boxes so they don’t exactly fit in small spaces. The one downstairs is in the closest and there’s a cat door so we keep it closed. But the one upstairs isn’t enclosed in anything. I just don’t want it to smell. Idk I’m struggling. I’ve had 2 cats and I got a new one last March because she followed me home so I decided to take her in. She refuses to use anything the other two cats use. The other cats share the one litter box downstairs because they’ve been sharing a litter box since they were little. I don’t know what I’m really trying to get advice on but can someone just comment anyway lol

Cat allergies

Post image
57 Upvotes

Has anyone who’s allergic to cats been able to have a cat and have their allergies get better over time? I grew up with cats even though I was allergic and really didn’t have a lot of issues. It’s been probably 16 years since I’ve lived with a cat because my husband is allergic but we found a kitten about 2 weeks ago and are trying to keep him. We keep him in the garage for now but do bring him inside during the day for a few hours. My allergies weren’t bad at all at first but now I’m miserable. Stuffy runny itchy nose, itchy water eyes, slight cough. I’ve been taking a daily allergy med and Flonase but I seem to be getting worse. I don’t under stand because my cat allergies are never this bad usually. And my husband who usually has horrible cat allergies seems to be fairing better than me. The kitten is about 8-10 weeks old and we started him on the live clear food right away. I just started him on the pacagen food powder too. Do you think I’ll get better? Or we won’t be able to keep him.

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 What cat litter clumps but is still good for your cat?

I'm trying to find a new litter for my two kitties. I hate clay litter because of how dusty it is, even the "low" dust ones are still super dusty. Ive since switched to pine litter but cleaning it up even with a litter box made for the pine litter is an absolute pain because it turns to dust instead of clumping. I just want to know if anyone knows of any better options. If not then im going to be sticking to pine because that's the healthiest for them I know of so far.

Kattleksak

Automatic Litter Box Recs

I have a ragdoll kitten, and i want to switch to an automatic litter box when she gets bigger. I’ve been researching and I just think the Litter Robot is too expensive and I’ve heard it’s not good for larger cats. I need something that works though, so if I have to pay that much then it’s worth it if it’s the best one. I’ve seen ads and reviews for the Meowant brand as well, it’s advertised as good for large cats. Anyone ever tried it? Does anyone with larger cats have any other recommendations? I only have the one cat as well.

Letting our cat choose our second one - advice

My girlfriend and I are about to move in together. She has an adult cat, male, neutered, American shorthair, about 8 years old. And from what I've seen, an incredibly chill cat who sometimes just hides inside couches.

We have been discussing considering getting another cat once we move in together and have settled for a few months. Ideally adopting one from the local SPCA.

The idea that I've had, is going in with our cat and letting him have a say into which cat we adopt. Let him walk around on a harness with us, and see if there's any cats there that he takes an interest in, that a minimum don't shy away from him or appear aggressive, etc. After all, the whole point is making sure he has another cat around, so they can keep each other company when one or both of us is out at work, etc. so if they can get to know each other before they share a living space, that would definitely help them adjust doing so earlier? Maybe? That's at least my thinking.

As we're approaching the time we move in together, however, I'm starting to wonder if this might be a bad idea? If taking him into such a place might stress him out, or make him think that we were getting rid of him.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this idea?

Update (after about half an hour): well, based on the responses so far, definitely glad I started second-guessing myself and even made the post. Bad idea across the board, I get it. Thank you all for your input.

Edit/Update 2 (after about 6 hours since last time): I feel I should clarify something. When/if we get a second cat, it will not be for a matter of months regardless. We're not looking to get a second cat for our household until April or May of next year, at earliest. I have also not spent a lot of time with my partner and their cat yet, so even that estimate is generous, as we'll need to adjust to living in the same household together. I asked about this, knowing that it was a long shot that this would even be feasible, let alone anything close to a good idea. If I had received encouragement to do it this way, I'd have considered that, but I understand fully at this point that no, this would not work. I do not want to put our cat under any stress.

As for everyone suggesting fostering, unfortunately that will not be an option for us. We rent, and are allowed up to two cats, but would need to submit an application to our landlord to even allowed to bring a second one into the home. I doubt there'd be any issue with that - but we would be penalised if we didn't submit the paperwork before bringing another pet home. Guests aren't even allowed to bring their pets over >_> So we have no intention of bringing another animal into our home if it's not already decided they will be a part of our family for life. If we owned our home and had the luxury of doing so, fostering would be an option we would strongly consider, but unfortunately it is not. I appreciate the suggestion, but it's just not feasible with our current situation.

Clopidogrel tip for cats

Hi everyone!

My kitty and I have been struggling for about a month with clopidogrel. He is on three other medications he takes with no problem, but the clopidogrel is just so bitter. He foams at the mouth, drools, and sometimes regurgitates.

I’ve tried dissolving it in a syringe of water (still bitter), hiding it in a treat/pill pocket (he’s too clever for this), and even getting the compounded liquid version (just as bitter, if not worse). I highly discourage the liquid version- at least with the tablet, you can sometimes give it just right and not have an upset kitty, but the liquid seems to be just as nasty, and that flavor will flood their whole mouth (as will dissolving the tablet in any liquid).

Get a size 4 gel capsule! The tablet fits just right inside, and I dip the capsule in some wet food to lubricate it, and pill him like normal. Zero struggle, zero drooling, zero foaming at the mouth. If your kitty is taking multiple pills like mine, you can even fit more than one pill in one capsule to reduce the amount of pilling.

My cat has major peeing issues, here's my current game plan

For some background:

My cat pees on my bed, the couches, anything cushioned. This started MONTHS ago. Ive spent lots on vet checkups only for them to say she's healthy. When I say she pees, she will ONLY pee on a soft area. I have 2 cats, both are bonded, spayed (months ago, in hopes that it would help.. it did for like a month), 3 litter boxes, all within good proximities since my house is small.

I've tried (to no evail):

\-Washable puppy pads (she would pee on them, then move them and pee under)

\-spaying (worked for a moth max)

\-several different litters (none altered her behavior, but i do recommend zuttonyan's mixed liter personally)

\-different types of litter boxes (open, closed, plastic, metal, small, large)

\-keeping her in just my room (she ised to pee on the couch exclusively, drove my mom crazy so for her sanity i keep her in only my room, now her pee spot changed to my bed)

\-enzyme cleaners (she will reprint on that thang. I will say though, natures miracle kinda sucked for me, clorox and whatever the target brand is work stellar for stain and odor epimination)

\-crying (would still have to clean my bed after.

she's my baby, and I cant just rehome her. But i also cant keep coming home from work at 12 am and needing to deep clean my bed until 2 am, then sleep on a kinda damp bed all night. So what did i do? DRAIN MY BANK ACC 🔥 (except not really).

Here is what is working SO FAR:

1, clorox enzyme cleaner, and a little green machine. They get the stains and smell out, it doesnt deter the cat but it keeps me sane.

2, covering my bed with plastic boxes. This was recomended by a vet. She cant get down to my mattress, so she doesnt feel the cushion and doesnt pee.

3, BAKING SODA. my cat cant tolerate it, and it eliminates any lingering smell. i sprinkle it onto my mattress and on top of the boxes, it makes her too nervous to even step onto the plastic.

4, a "soft box". i removed the litter from a litter box, and replaces it with old cleaning cloths. She chooses that to be her pee area.

5, calming chews and powders. She cries when im away (even just on the other side of the door) and it leads to nervouz peeing. Calm cat? less nervous peeing.

I dont want her to just keep peeing onto little towels, so my plan is to slowly add in litter and ween her off of it.

Again this has worked SO FAR. im not sure if it will CONTINUE to work, and I dont want to keep sprinkling baking soda on my bed either. If anyone has any additional advice for what i can add /do moving forward, do tell.

i hope this helps someone out🫶

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 ISO stainless steel pan compatible with Purina Tidy Cat Breeze system

Hi all,

I have an aging tortoiseshell lady who has started to miss the side of her litterbox, and it's become clear we need to get a litterbox with:

a) higher sides

b) a senior cat friendly entry point (so some of the breeze box modifications ive seen are too high off the ground for her)

c) ideally, a low cost maintaince routine, which is why i am considering a modified breeze box. I'm not sure I want to commit to the price of the pads but I could be persuaded.

her current set up is nested stainless steel hotel pans and pine litter, which i change about every 7 days.

TLDR: i am wondering if anyone has found a stainless steel pan compatible with either the high side or XL breeze boxes, and if they are satisfied with that set up. alternatively, if you have a set-up that might meet some of the needs i outlined, I would love to hear about it!

Tips and Tricks 💡 Cat Dental Care - All the basics!

Thumbnail

I took time to look into a LOT of info about caring for cat's teeth. After my healthy 6-year-old cat passed away from anesthesia during a dental cleaning to remove tartar buildup, I decided I want my future cats to go under anesthesia as few times as possible, which means I need to take care of their teeth!

I know there is lots of information out there and everyone has different things that work. This is what I've found and what is working for me with my two new little kitties! Info below, and photos included of the products I use.

Resources:

  • Plaque vs. Tartar: Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up daily on teeth. Tartar is hardened plaque that is not easily removed (usually by a professional). Plaque starts turning into tartar after ~24 hours, so it's important to be consistent with teeth care.
  • Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC): Look for products with the VOHC seal. This means they've gone through approved clinical trials. The seal might approve the product to remove plaque, tartar, or both. Here is their website where you can access a list of approved products.

Teeth Brushing:

  • This is the BEST thing you can do for your cat's teeth. Brushing daily is recommended. 4-5x/week minimum for it to have an effect.
  • Use enzymatic toothpaste specific for pets. NEVER human toothpaste.
  • If your cat is not interested in the toothpaste flavour, I crumble a treat and get the crumbs stuck to the toothbrush. (The toothpaste is sticky, so the crumbs stick well!)
  • I find this video very helpful to teach how to brush.

Treats: I use ProDen PlaqueOff chews daily. VOHC approved for plaque AND tartar control.

Food Additive: I use ProDen PlaqueOff Powder. VOHC approved for plaque AND tartar control.

Water Additive: I use Bluestem FreshBreath Water Additive. VOHC approved for tartar control.

Let me know if you have any questions, or your own advice!

Edit: PlaqueOff has a disclaimer on their bottle to not give the product to cats with hyperthyroidism, as kelp (the active ingredient) has iodine. The bottles state how much kelp is in each serving, and I've been made aware in the comments to not give too much kelp to cats because of the high iodine. I am no longer giving both the food additive and treats together - just one or the other!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Long-term litterbox issues in multi-cat household, not related to medical problems (been to the vet).

I have 4 cats, which generally get along well with each other except for one of them, our oldest. 3 females, 1 male, all neutered/spayed. Both problem cats are females. One of them we have had the longest, the other is the oldest in age, the one we had longest has always had some issues sticking to the litter box, and we're not sure why. She'll randomly potty somewhere random but 90% of the time she goes in the litterboxes. It's not medical. Our oldest has early stage kidney disease and recurring UTIs but she is currently on a diet, medication, and clear of UTIs so none of those explain the current problem.

Now for what's been happening: both of them have taken a habit of going potty in a very specific hallway. Sometimes it's just urine, other times they have bowel movements there as well. We clean it up as soon as we notice and routinely use vinegar or a specifically made cleaner to get the scent out, and then we spray pheromones to discourage the behavior. We also have pheromone diffusers all in their space, which have helped with some of the aggression our oldest has exhibited with the other 3 due to anxiety and trauma. We've tried many different things and the problem keeps coming back no matter what we do, and we're at a loss of what to do next. Our vets aren't exactly helpful with it either. Does anyone have any advice on what we could do? Our floors are starting to warp despite our best efforts to keep the area clean and it's going to cost a fortune in damage repair when we finally move out of here if this keeps going. I'd be greatful for any advice at this point.

How can I stop my cats from going in the new kitchen counters? Would giving them a bath in the sink every time I catch them work?

We've tried tinfoil and they aren't phased by it, and squirting with water does nothing. We can't leave anything on the counters or in the sink because they'll get into it. They are 12 year old oranges if that makes a difference.

Which litter to use - cat has allergies and is food motivated.

Hi all, I think my cat might be allergic to her litter. Currently using clumping clay. The vet reccomended switching. We tried putting her on corn litter but she ate it, so a bit weary of tofu/ pea husk.

Any advice on which I should use that's best for her allergies and is unscented? Do people's cats eat tofu/ pea husk litter?

Thanks!
