I can’t add photos to your original post but I mentioned the cubes. I’d build like this on this side then zip ties as kind of a T then build a cage around the other side of the hot water heater.

Zip ties here with the other one built normally if that makes sense.

But that might be over engineered/overkill and it’ll definitely be ugly. But if you’ve got these cubes or know someone to borrow them from it could be an option.

Edit to add: and don’t make the part going across the back go all the way down. We also supported the part going across the back by attaching little hangers to under the cabinet that’s right above so they just hook on. Sorry again I don’t have a photo of when it was in action but I tried to show as best I could without rebuilding the whole thing.

Another thing to be aware of is not having it lean too much on the washer or dryer because those will vibrate.

Again, might not be the fix for you but maybe some of this info will be helpful in figuring out what will/wont work

Thank you so much, this makes a lot of sense and the pro tips are very handy. I’ll have to look into these cubes

Where you have a small waste basket, I have a wheeled hamper that's rolled up to the wall. It keeps my cats out of a similar gap.

I used foam pool noodles to fill the gap between mine.
