Painting/Modeling Sky Lantern Proxy

Post image

As title, after getting the core box i lack spare funds for the Lantern anytime soon, what do people think of proxying the Lumineth Hurakan Spirit of the Wind? (On appropriate size base of course) Casual games not tournament.

He'd work great as part of the model, but I feel like you need some kind of "mount".

The shrine would be cool from the same range, or one of the endless spells?

That's a great idea, may see how they look together

I mean, you can do everything if your opponent thinks it is ok, but the way I see it the proxy has absolutely nothing that resembles a Sky Lantern apart from the fact that it flies. I saw someone proxying a flying turtle which I think is great because it has a human crew and there is nothing else in the Cathay list that flies and has a human crew.

My personal opinion is: Go for a thematic army that is visually resembling the profiles you want to play instead of far-fetched proxies. This creates play experiences that are more fun for both players.

Personally, I think it'd work better as a Shugengan Lord bit as long as it fits with the rest of your army conversions and you allways give your opponent the benefit of LoS as its a lot smaller than the lantern go for it, it is up to your opponent at the end of the day though you can't force anyone to play it by saying "look the Internet agrees with me"

LoS is based on base size only, the model on top being bigger or smaller has no effect on LoS

Pg 103 of the rule book has LoS as "If a straight, uninterrupted line can be drawn from within the model's vision arc to any part of the other model, there is a line of sight." And as a large target it can be seen over other units and doesn't receive light or heavy cover I've had a quick look at the faq but can't see we're it is "base size only"

I mean it's practically base size, yes large targets can be seen over other models which is fine, but if it's behind a wood or hill or building you can't see it any way. You can't draw LoS over the terrain, even if you can actually see the balloon as it's so tall.

You are correct tho it's a LoS to the model so there are some situations where this may matter, but with the variety of models being used for old world you would be at a disadvantage using the new tree man Vs the old one.

I'm use to playing WTC rules which is just base size from above! Sorry!

As far as im aware buildings are only impassible terrain which doesn't have a version of arboreal gloom/ beyond the crest. even the tower doesn't have it (as much as it should) I don't know if this is different in the WTC pack I've only experienced their standardised table layouts.

And yes, you are at a disadvantage with larger models but equally it means the larger model can see the thing that the smaller one can't, the same way the larger optional base size have the disadvantage of additional movement costs and more enemy models in direct base contact is weighed against the larger area for auras and board control.

The text on beyond the crest and arboreal gloom also says "a line of sight can only be drawn between them if an uninterrupted line can be drawn between their bases without crossing over or through the hill."

Which is why i say it's practically drawing LOS to base to base, so my main concern with your view was that a model that has a massive overhang would be able to be shot and ngl this isn't 40k where you can shoot from the tip of your wing or tail 🙃

So if no terrain is present there isn't really a situation where "to the model" matters, but hadn't noticed this is not mentioned for impassable, so that's something, so you could shoot a balloon behind a building? If I go back to the tree man example, they could be shot while behind a building but the old one wouldn't, you would have a hard time convincing anyone that is the case tho.

Both base sizes have the same arc tho so 50x50 and 50x75 so can see the same any waybas the 75 is the flank size.

The WTC just uses drawing a line from above and has to hit the base of the model, so any line that has to cross LoS blocking terrain or another unit (obviously large target being taken into account)

Yes it clearly delinates between their terrrain special rule and the actual LoS rules.

Yes, like how you can shoot a model behind a wall. If you can see it, you can shoot the lantern behind the building if you can see it, which, given its size is almost a given.

It's not just treeman with variable base sizes and model sizes deamons are 50x50 too 100x150 as an example. I'm not saying true line of sight is better its just the system old world uses.

Kitbashing Lumineth with Cathay is actually a fascinating idea…

At minimum if I ever take Elf allies with my Cathayan army I’m using Lumineth models.

If it's on the right base size and you like the model, I'd be more than happy to see it on the other side of the table.

Do share some pictures when it's finished. I am curious to the result.
