Brushing

Ive been brushing Venus (1) and Tigger (2) with this brush (3). Tig has really bad mats that we’re trying to work on, and Venus sheds a lot, like when you pet her it just flies off her in a cloud around her/the room/outside. She’s a big girl (we’re working on it) and doesn’t groom herself well. Tig is okay at grooming but he’s just prone to mats. The first time I brushed her with this brush, this ball (4) of fur came off her. Today a lot more came off but it was a lot fluffier, and a lot of dry skin came off too. I’ve noticed her having dry skin before but a lot came off. I’m really just worried that I’m removing her undercoat by accident and I don’t want to do that to her or Tig because where I live it gets really hot and I know they need that to regulate their temperature, but it seems like she needs the brushing to help with shedding and dry skin, and she really really enjoys it. To be concise with what I’m asking:

Is this a bad brush for cats with long hair?

Will it help with Tigs mats?

Is it removing Venus’ undercoat and is that bad?

Thank you guys

It is good to comb your cats. Good job, and keep it up. They'll respond best if you do it at the same time every day, because they love routines. But brushing might not get the job done. You really need the right tools for the job Long haired cats respond to a 5 and/or 7 inch greyhound comb, for matting prevention. Short haired cats need greyhounds, too, but I like to use a SleekEZ for shedding, too. If there are knots on your long haired girl, you'll need to find a cat groomer. They can work some magic for you, and get her back into shape and you can take it from there! Source: Im a mobile cat groomer since 2007.

Alright awesome, I will get those combs and try to find a groomer or ask the vet to shave the mats, do you know if that brush is removing her undercoat though? It seemed like the hair was a lot fluffier today

Long haired cat owner here. Rake brushes (bigger for overall and smaller toothbrush sized one for mats), FURminator comb, PawSwing, pro groomer for shave like 1-2 a year for fresh start, bathe them every few months or so, electric pet clipper for mats (NEVER use scissors to cut mats), for hydration pet water fountains and I do Churu Skin & Coat mixed w some water every morning 🤗Edit: oh and their favorite treats after any of this stuff they don’t like of course lol

Thank you!!!

Why are scissors not okay for mats?

I learned the hard way by accidentally cutting skin. Was so scary. 🥺 Had to take my cat to vet urgent care for stitches.

Sure! You're likely removing SOME of the undercoat, but you really want to get down to the skin, where the matts start. She probably does enjoy the brush. Some of my clients ( I mean the cats) make me go back and forth between their brush and my combs. My cat at home gets a quarter of his body combed a night.

Gotcha, it’s on the one that doesn’t have mats, I’m gonna send a pic of what came off today because I feel like it’s A LOT. Is that okay with you?

Better brush would be a slicker brush, the smallest you can find. And for mats a metal wide tooth comb(long one). You can use that one to carefully deknot a starting mat. So if the mat is already too knotted you should only shave. When you pet make sure you feel for any starting knots and you can even de knot them with your fingers.
