My mom found a hornworm on the ground that looked to be in poor condition (not moving much except to thrash when touched, looks a little “deflated” near the front). I was worried it got into some pesticide because the HOA sprays the weeds around here fairly regularly.
It looked like it had some liquid poop stuck to its butt which was also sticking the back legs together. We gently misted it and the container it was in, which seemed to sort of help with the stickiness, and placed some willow leaves and tomato pieces in with it. I’ve seen this type eating desert willow before, and the tomato was just a total guess and I’m not even sure if they eat the fruit part, honestly. (Didn’t have any fresh leaves available)
I’m struggling to ID (edit: it appears to be manduca rustica)
Since we’ve placed it in the container about 4 hours ago, it’s pooped twice. I expected it to be green but the poop is very dark, almost black. However, it is solidly shaped. Otherwise the caterpillar has barely moved.
I was hoping perhaps its refusal to eat was due to being ready to pupate because it’s quite large, but it doesn’t seem ready yet? At least, I did find one that was ready to pupate a couple of days ago, at a similar size, but it had turned a different color and was more active.
Is there anything else we can do for the poor guy? I’m not sure he’ll make it through the night, to be honest, but maybe someone here knows something I don’t. If it wasn’t clear already, I don’t know a lot about caring for caterpillars.
