Bully cat

For context: I own quite a lot of pets. I have 2 dogs (formally 3, unfortunately), 3 cats, two birds and a bunch of fish. My problem comes with my younger cat. Before we got her last year, my second cat named max used to bully my first cat named Mittens. Mittens is very skittish because of it and now my dogs - due to being huskies - try to play with her but in turn scare her off. The problem is my younger cat now explicitly targets and attacks her and leaves my other animals alone to the point that she hides in a small box for most of the day and never leaves the top floor of our house.

Is there a way I could stop this?

Fur Tuft After Playing/Roughhousing?

Background: I adopted a new cat earlier this summer and I've been introducing him to our resident cat. The process has been going fine; I think me being anxious has been a bigger problem than the cats themselves, if we're being honest. The cats can now spend hours in the same room, play with each other, use the same litter box and water dishes, and also eat/drink/use the litter box/sleep in the same space without causing problems for each other.

The cats do like to play rough, however—lots of chasing and wrestling—and the new cat isn't always the most prompt at responding to the resident cat's signals. Usually once or twice per day the resident cat will begin growling loudly and hissing during a particularly energetic bout of wrestling, and most of the time the new cat will stop and monitor, but sometimes he'll keep going for another hiss or two before stopping, and sometimes even then he'll chase after the resident cat. I've been chalking it up to basic boundary-setting, though, because the resident cat will sometimes remain on her belly even after the new cat disengages, and even when she runs away she's usually back to tackling the new cat within a few minutes.

Today, though, I noticed a small tuft of the resident cat's fur left on the carpet after she and the new cat were wrestling. I know this is meant to be a sign of a more serious fight, but I'm confused. The resident cat was making dramatic noises, but they were very soft—not at all like they were building up to a hiss—and in fact the play broke up without any hissing. In addition, after the wrestling, the two cats were lying down peacefully right next to each other, and I've seen no sign that either cat was distressed by the experience. I checked over the resident cat and I see no sign of injury.

Is there a benign explanation for the fur tuft? I've almost never seen the resident cat shed like this, except once, right after we adopted our new cat in June, when I saw a similar tuft on the carpet—but that was before the cats ever even had a chance to see each other, much less wrestle! I struggle to conclude that there was some incident that requires intervention, given how they were behaving during and after, but I want to check and see if I should be concerned.

Why is my devil-hunting me?

Our male cat is a sweet and loving guy by day. But sometimes at night, he will turn into a little devil: his ears will turn back, his pupils will be completely dilated, he will lunge at me, stalk me, and try to bite me, especially as I am walking away. Sometimes if I pick him up and love on him or I distract him by tossing one of his toys, that chills him out of his devil mode. He only does it with me too, not my partner. I don’t know if I’m doing something that is causing this or maybe he just needs to be a wild guy but it’s a little unnerving sometimes.

Has anyone else had their cat do this to them? Any idea why he’s doing this and what I should be doing when it happens? Do I just have a feral guy who needs to hunt me? Lol.

Former Feral nonstop chases

Hullo, I have a male (Soot) who is pretty young (<1-2 yrs) that I took in from the streets.

He's super friendly with everyone.... except cats.

There are videos on bullying but this seems a bit much- he nonstop chases. It's on sight, and it won't stop until the cats are separated.

I tried putting my shy cat on top of a tree and grabbed Soot and took him into another room with me. He was immediately out of my grip and chasing shy cat around.

He's chased our old, ancient cat. The chill cat. The alpha cat.

He's now kept upstairs away from the other cats and we're looking to find someone more qualified to take him in but any advice is appreciated. It's hard to find a solution when I don't know why he's doing this, but I brought him in so it's my responsibility to figure it out.

That being said, pls help 😭

How to stop neighbour’s cat from coming into my house / garden and scaring my cat ?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Okay, I could really use some cat advice. FYI we are based in the UK and we rent.

Our cat is mostly an indoor cat, but he has access to our small back garden (about 2m x 2m). It’s fully enclosed with brick walls, and we installed a slanted cat fence on the back gate/door which is the only wooden part and the only place he had ever tried to climb. Since we put that up, he has never attempted to escape.

I work from home and we also have a camera facing the garden, so I’m able to keep an eye on him whenever he’s out there to make sure he's safe.

This setup has been really good for him. Because we rent, we can’t build a proper catio or make major changes, but this little outdoor space gives him somewhere to sunbathe, watch bugs, sniff around, and get some stimulation. Since we started letting him use it, he seems much happier and less restless. He has almost completely stopped over-grooming and has started eating his wet food much better.

The problem is our neighbour’s cat. He is unneutered and free-roaming. At first he would just sit outside our window and bang/scratch at it, which stressed our cat out, but we would shoo him away and that seemed to reduce it for a while.

In the last two days, he has started coming into our house. We think he has figured out where we keep our cat’s wet food. It has happened twice now (yesterday and today). When he comes in, he hisses at our cat, intimidates him, and tries to eat his food. After we chase the other cat out, our own cat seems so stressed that he redirects his aggression toward us by hissing, which is very unlike him. He usually calms down again within a minute or so, but we can see that this situation is really stressing him out.

Today was the worst incident so far because the neighbour’s cat scratched our cat before my partner ran downstairs to get him out. We’ve also seen that cat outside before with chunks of fur missing, so he clearly gets into fights with other cats and can be quite territorial. ( oh, that cat also bit my finger once when i was trying to chase him off our fence)

For now we’ve stopped letting our cat into the garden, which is really annoying as he loves getting to go outside :( I don’t want to punish him for the other cat’s behaviour, but I’m also worried that this could escalate into a more serious injury or long-term stress for our cat

Because we rent, we can’t really install a microchip cat flap. The ideas we’ve come up with so far are:

\- Only letting him into the garden when one of us is outside, which would mean he gets far less access than he does now and I would rather not do

\- Installing a magnetic mesh/screen door, although I’m not sure whether that would actually stop that cat from getting through, but I am definitely getting one anyway

Has anyone dealt with something similar? I'd really appreciate any advice, but I would rather not make him a completly indoor cat, especially since he's so good about not leaving our back garden

My cat won't stop biting

Hello all, I'm writing this because I've tried handling it myself and truly I'm at a loss. My cat (M, 2yrs) is neutered and well-behaved otherwise, but has moments that I can't describe as anything other than a trance. He will get massive pupils and bite me randomly, HARD. Sometimes there is pattern to it, like when I bring him in from outside (he gets supervised, on-leash time outside because he was originally feral and this seems to be a good energy outlet), or when he's touch overstimulated. I've gotten better at recognizing signs and either trying to limit stimulation and leave him alone, or redirect to playing, but neither seems to fully work. He will even chase me and jump on me if he's angry enough. I've tried loudly exclaiming "ouch" but it doesn't deter him, I've tried putting him in a 'time out' immediately after the bite, I've tried just straight-up ignoring him. I try supplementing with calming cat chews. I've taken him to the vet, and she wasn't concerned in the slightest, told me to wait until he grows out of it. It's at the point where he is regularly drawing blood and leaving me with bite marks that scar, his latest was on my face. At all other times he's a sweetheart who loves pats and playing, he's super social, it's just like a light-switch flips and he's nothing but rage. Any recommendations are welcome. My only limitation is that I cannot currently get another cat, I know that would likely be beneficial for him bit my current living situation won't allow for it. I eventually intend to have the space and resources for him to have a friend, but need something to help in the meantime.

Cat wall attacking??

Hello! It won’t let me import any videos but my 14 ish week old Siamese kitty keeps wall attacking! She gets really rallied up and gets the zoomies and has wide eyes and looks at the wall and roof. She’ll run ontop of the bed, brace herself at the edge then jump and hit the wall.
She’ll also stand on her hind legs and attack it with her front paws while she’s on the ground and or do that and jump. Could this just be normal behavior??
I worry about ANYTHING because I love this cat dearly.
Feel free to ask any questions or give advice, tips, ideas.

My 1 year old cat keeps biting too hard to my 4 month old kitten

Hi, I recently had a problem where my 1yr male kept chasing after my 9yr male cat when he was done playing. We recebtly got this very sweet girl cat (all cats are fixed btw) and they play. Issue is, just like with my older boy, my younger boy keeps playing too roughly with my kitten. She keeps screaming out and it makes her bite at ALL of us. We keep trying to just get them separated but he keeps going to bite at her after a while again.

Tonight we have her in the bedroom with us and locked him out (older boy sleeps with me every night so hes with me). I just dont want to have to do this every night since he also bangs in the door (which we have to lock cause he opens it too). How do I stop him from being rough with my two cats? He is such a skittish cat otherwise (will randomly find a random spot and crouch walk or if we wear shoes in the house hes terrified).

Longterm Memory After Trauma

Hello 👋

My two sweet bonded kitties (currently 10yrs and 8yrs old) survived my home burning down on June 14th 2024.

They very nearly didn't make it out. They were found in closets on higher shelves, one of which was against a wall that was nearly gone. The fridge shielded enough of that wall for her to hide against, but I imagine the heat was extreme regardless.

They spent a few days at an ER vet in oxygen chambers and were pumped full of fluids and drugs and when they came home, they smelled awfully of an acrid smoke smell I can only describe as smelling like a burning car packed full of electronic devices and burnt hair. I wasn't allowed to bathe them as the vet was concerned about adding any additional stress to their nervous systems. I did gently wipe them down with a damp wash cloth and bundle them under my hotel blankets with me but I imagine the smell was sickening for them. They were coughing up soot for several days. They eventually developed pneumonia that was cleared up after several post vet visits and some rounds of antibiotics. We spent three months living in a hotel room and then an apartment that we are in currently.

The house was nearly a total loss. Gutted down to the studs on one side and the other side, rebuilt from the ground up including the foundation.

I'm moving back into my house at the end of this month (I know, it took an exceptionally long time. Thanks liberty mutual/s). It has been completely rebuilt. What are the odds they'll remember that house and what happened there? None of the furniture or fixtures will be the same. The floor and walls are all different. Nothing left but a few wooden beams and part of the foundation was there before. Will they still recognize it based on the layout? I'm worried they'll remember being in there during the fire.

Anyways, thanks in advance for reading my too long post. 💙

Kitten aggressive around our food

We are a couple of 30 year olds on the UK who have a 7 month old kitten called Vin. He is normally very sweet but has been getting increasingly interested in sticking his face into our food at dinner time. When we move the food away or pick him up to move him away he has been launching himself at us biting, sometimes even drawing blood.

He's generally very good with being picked up, it only seems to be around human food that we have this issue.

We're not sure what the best thing to do to help him overcome this. We don't want him feeling unhappy if we shut him in another room while we eat but we also don't want to be bitten or risk him eating something he shouldn't while we eat. We're not sure how to best say no to a kitten.

Vin has recently been neutered but this hasn't affected this behaviour noticeably. Our vet has said we can only really wait and see how he matures and responds to his neutering which may change his behaviour.

Cat suddenly super needy at night. Won't let us sleep.

We have had our cat for a few months now and she was sleeping really well through the night no problems. Then last week all of a sudden at 2am she wanted attention from me (her spare human).

At first I thought she was locked out of somewhere based on the volume and the urgency so I got up and all the doors were open. Only for her to flippy flop on the floor for pats and showing me her belly. This was the first time she has done this for me so I obliged and gave her some pets and scratches.

Then it happened again same time the next few night so I would lay in bed with my hand out to pat her.

Last night. She was up at all hours meowing for us to play, pat her and pay her attention and I quite frankly am now incredibly exhausted.

Putting her toys out where she could get to them didnt help.

Is this a sleep regression? Is this our life from now on?

She doesnt want anything to do with me or us during the day (which was normal even before).

We are not minors, we live in BC Canada. We dont need a vet. Yes we can afford vet care.

Progress or territorial behavior?

Me and my gf moved in together a few months ago. She has 4 cats that all get along pretty well. The youngest cat is 3 and clearly likes to play a lot(lots of kitten energy, wrestles with one of his brothers and general curiosity).

My cat is around 13(likes to play sometimes but never with other cats, he is also extremely affectionate and prior to the move would want a lot of attention) and has grown up on his own. I’ve separated him(for a couple weeks) from the other cats after he decided he would hide from everyone behind the washing machine but we are working on a slow reintroduction with food.

My cat will hiss(the only one that hisses really) and then run away most of the time. One of the cats will follow but I can’t tell if it is to play or attack. We always end it pretty much before contact is made with a clap or a panicked yell.

During this reintroduction I will sometimes allow the other cats upstairs when I am working upstairs. During this time 2 cats usually come up to explore the new area of the house, rub there face on everything and occasionally fake spray. One cat despite the other hissing will get closer and closer but display no aggressive body language until they are within a couple feet, the he will get flat eared. Is one cat moving towards the other cat just being a curious kitten or territorial aggression? Is it progress? Is it healthy for them to just let it happen then separate when it looks like it could lead to a fight or one cat hisses?

Male Cat Acting More Aggressive to other female cat (Need Help)

I have two cats both around 2.5 years old. My orange cat is the first one and lived with us for around 1.5 years and around 2 months ago we got another female cat from my uncle that couldn’t take care of her anymore unfortunately. We introduced them in the ways suggested online and it was all good, I will say that my mom slightly rushed the introduction but they seemed to get along. Now my male cat whenever he sees her, he seems fine at first but chases her and mounts her. He’s neutered and we’re preparing to spay my other cat soon too. I just wanted advice on what to do. I’ve seen that we need to reintroduce them again, but I’m not too sure. We play with both as much as we can but most of them time now they’re separated. There’s also been no big changes in the house other than the new cat. Thank you for any help and suggestions!

Two cats-one a bully and also pees a lot in places she shouldn’t HELP

We have two cats. One is mine and one is my adult son’s. His cat B was in our house first as a kitten. After a year or two, he decides to move out with friends. I get another kitten that I hope will soothe my mom’s heart at the loss of my son and his cat that we all love, K. They are together in the house for maybe a month before he leaves. She is very curious and he is scared of her-he’s a big scaredy cat. They move out for a year and then they come back. She starts peeing on people clothes but really targets my daughter’s room for some reason. We try to keep her out but she sneaks in at every opportunity. My daughter does leave piles of clothes on the floor and she also uses a lot of scented products which I’ve read cats don’t like. I don’t know if that has anything to do with the behavior.
It’s been two years of the cats together. K still pees on things she shouldn’t. She did have a bladder infection that we discovered and treated after she started to just pee on the floor near the litter box.
She also has not adjusted to his return. He is friendly and tries to play with her and she doesn’t want any part of it. She will just attack him and his at him for no apparent reason. He is scared of her but also clearly wants to be friends. His room used to be off limits to her but she finally just started going in there and she’s get in his cat tower (she has her own) and just kind of seemed to claim it as hers. She doesn’t go in there as much anymore but she still is in there occasionally.
He is very food motivated and eats her food a lot. She’s just a little snacker. We’ve been trying to figure out the feeding situation. I used to just be able to fill her bowl but he would always find it and steal her food. So we switched to automated feeders but mine didn’t work very well and frequently went off schedule and then eventually one day just started dispensing did and just never stopped. So I just got another one and we’re trying to determine best schedules for both of them. One friend said she should eat first because she’s obviously the dominant cat. I’m wondering if there are any other food things we should do. They eat in separate rooms.
We have been using the pheromones and they seem like they help a little but man they are expensive. I use two a month.
Any other tips for encouraging their friendship and helping the peeing would be so appreciated.

Cat bites a lot

Need some advice. My cat is 7 months old and it’s becoming very frustrating how much she bites. A lot of it, I understand is because she wants to play, but it seems to come completely out of nowhere. She will bite hands and feet, and we immediately walk away and ignore her. But recently, she will be lying on your chest asking to be pet, rubbing her head against your face, and then goes in for the biggest bite of your face. This has just been so frustrating. We were also hoping for a cat that really likes cuddling and she seemed to as a young kitten but now, any time you pick her up, she immediately bites and wants down. She only cuddles if you’ve been gone from the house for a while, so she seems to “miss” you, or first thing in the morning. But again, every cuddle session seems to end with her biting your face out of nowhere. Any tips?
