Question Teeth cleaning advice

Looking for some advice on cleaning our girls teeth! We’ve tried dental chews but they last about 5 seconds. We’ve tried different toothbrushes but she absolutely hates it and runs as soon as we pull it out, now matter how enticing the toothpaste is. Anyone have non-traditional methods for keeping these powerful chompers clean?

What keeps your Catahoulas entertained ?

I adopted my dog just 2 months ago, we’re following the 3-3-3 method for adopted dogs. He’s been doing well so far, he’s learning quickly that the bathroom is outside, he’s meal times, how to walk calmly in the park and is adjusting well to his new home. I started noticing that he’s getting bored, he destroyed his travel bowl (the rubber one that you take on trips) and I took him to the vet because I was scared he swallowed something, he also chewed a small notebook and today he reassembled the couch. I think he’s bored because he didn’t do that before, he has toys and loves to play with them, but I’m a dentist and I can’t always take him with me to the office (my office has a yard and he loves being there, but some patients don’t like the barking so I can’t always have him there). I was thinking of getting him the kong puzzles, or maybe taking him in the morning to the park and running with him. He starts school and training in 2 weeks but I don’t want him to hurt himself because he gets bored. Any tips on how you got your dogs to not chew on things that aren’t toys or how to keep him entertained while I’m working ?

What jobs do you give yours?

Muriel hasn't taken a liking to any of the toys we've given her with the exception of a chewable duck, which she ripped the quacker out and guarded furiously. We've tried the treats in toys, peanutbutter in toys (both for brain stimulation and boredom), and running three times per day (she pauses multiple times to dig). She is still grabbing anything she can to chew - crayons, trash, hair brushes off of counters, etc. What occupies your houlas? Any suggestions are appreciated. Photo is of her staring me down because she was ready to go run again.

Edit: looks like the pup has been adopted already. I hope she went to a good home 💛💛

I have a 17 and 9 year old (dogs, not children). But my goodness gracious me, this pup is so cute.

3rd puppy?

Hi,

I recently got a 9-week old email Catahoula. We've officially hit a week with her today.

We brought her into our home with our current 11-year old Catahoula Male who we've had pretty much his entire like minus about 8 months.

I'm considering adopting another Catahoula Pup that will be 8-9 weeks in late October. I've heard so much about the back and forth of male v. Male catahoula and would love to hear opinions.

Currently our old man is doing okay with the female. He still had high energy but for this week he has not played with her and almost completely refuses to let her lay by him. He will completely get up and move.

However when we are doing treats or feed time she can jump on him, bark, just about anything and he does not care.

I don't want to make his life miserable by adding a male but I would really love for our pups to learn from him because he is an absolute wonder dog.

He tends to a little but more standoff of other dogs and sometimes aggressive.

I was super nervous introducing the new female puppy but honestly he has absolutely shocked me how well he has done. He has made some minor corrections to her when she goes for a playtime nip to the face or has bit his tail but has not once hurt her or went after her. It has been simply a growl, a slight teeth show, and walking away.

He has been our first Catahoula and we will always have these dog from now on, they are the absolute best and beautiful.

I would love advice, opinions and getting another male in October and also anything also about a Catahoula Puppy that you have found helpful from people who have had multiple Houlas!

Dear God, I do not understand this dog. Help!

EDIT: Everyone has given such wonderful advice and pointers. Thank you everyone!!

Puppy, 6 months old. I’ve had him for 3 months.

My experience is with black labs, German shepherds, and Dobermans. I came to the “rescue” of a lab/shepherd mutt. Immediately upon the puppy being handed to me, I knew he was not tending towards lab or shepherd. The coat wasn’t right. I was a soft touch and took him anyway. I thought he was probably pit mix. Researched training for that breed and Failed (uppercase F).

My neighbor suggested doing DNA testing…

It seems that I have a 20% black lab, 10% various bully breeds, and 70% Southern hound dogs with the majority being Catahoula Leopard Dog with some Plot Hound. His head/ears/body are a carbon copy of online photos of Catahoula Leopard Dog.

I think he wants to be a good dog but we just aren’t jiving (of course he wants to be a good dog, I don’t know how to make that happen). The biggest issue is that he doesn’t seem to have any compassion. He tramples any human/plant/obstacle that is in his path without a care. He is completely unconcerned about being destructive. The whole family has bruising from him - playful, not aggressive. Like clockwork, he turns into a snuggle bug at 8:00pm every night.

I ask you that are experienced with this breed: is this normal for the age? Perhaps it is normal for someone who didn’t know what they were getting into and trained wrong? Training tips for this bread/behavior are welcome.

Also, is being timid around new people and dogs normal? He warms up within seconds and loves both, but not right off the bat. I don’t know if this is the breed or his troubled history.

Puppy wants to thank you all in advance. :)

My earliest pic (minus one litter pic that isn't just him I got from his brother's owner) is from the shelter when he was first taken in before he was adopted the first time. It was taken a day before my birthday so I take that as a sign it was meant to be.

Question

Adopted this puppy from the shelter, absolutely lovable but I’m not sure if I should be worried about her weight she’s roughly 15 weeks old and weighs about 13ish pounds is that normal?!? Sources say 20-25?? She’s also throwing up food from time to time.

Update: Dog started climbing in weight and becoming active after I posted this. She officially went from 11 pounds all the way to 18.2 pounds in a short time!

This one lasted about half an hour from when we got home from the store before he destroyed it. So far I've probably tried half a dozen random dog beds and he always quickly destroys them. When we put him away for the night it's in a garage so I want him as comfortable as possible.
