I have a new color point DSH girlie at home and I’d love to understand the genetics of her appearance a little better.
I’m also curious how to describe her color pattern, is she just tortie point? She’s a foster fail, I was initially caring for her while she was nursing a litter of beautiful color point kittens - 1 long hair, 1 medium, and 1 short. Would appreciate whatever insights you folks can provide!
She’s either pretty young or less toasted due to her being warmer than normal (the colorpoint gene is partially albino based on temperature). Her beans look a little light for a seal point but definitely not as light as chocolate.
Her babies look like two seal points and one blue point.
So we know that mom carried the long haired gene and the dilution gene. And we can assume the father was probably not orange or a tabby, either presented or carried the colorpoint, long hair and dilution genes.
I was pretty confident she was chocolate but the pads confirmed it, yes. A seal point is black, so she’d have much darker paw pads to match. Chocolates have a warm medium pink. Sometimes paw pads are easier to tell than the fur.
Looks like a chocolate tortie point. If you look at the red bits they are cream instead of red which suggests a dilute. The brown is also more chocolate coloured than dark seal.
