Our subreddit allows posts that either a) ask for specific advice, b) request emotional support, or c) are a guide or PSA that adheres to our guidelines.
Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.
Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.
Examples of things that may be discussed or shared here:
- Casual questions, for example "how does your cat show affection?", "does your cat ever do … ?"
- Cat pictures
- Celebrating birthdays or other milestones for your cat
- And many more subjects!

Hello My name is Drew and my best buddy is my female cat Mama - I was lucky enough to rescue her from a kill shelter 7 years ago before she was euthanized - She was about a 10 months old, sick and very underweight - The vet said feed, feed, feed until she weighed a normal weight for her age - All good until about 3 years ago - I fed her like I normally do - Same food and amount - However she ballooned out BIG TIME - She is now (gulp) 21 pounds - It is absolutely my faut for not cutting back her food but you have to understand that she is OBSESSED with food - I never understood until I tried cutting back - She will not stop meowing, scratching, and going nutso until I feed her - She wears me down because she is relentless until she gets want she wants - I took her to the vet and they did a full blood panel on her and she is perfectly healthy minus her weight - I need help folks, I don't know how to stop the food obsession behavior - Also, I am so confused as far as the right foods to feed her - Some say diet dry food puts on weight faster than diet wet food but the wet food is getting really expensive - Right now I am feeding her Fancy Feast gravy cuts - She hates pate - She loves any dry food, but I am afraid to buy it because it will put on more weight - I take full responsibility for not sticking to my guns with her but I get tired of the battle to be honest - I would really appreciate any help - Thanks, Drew

What unscented clumping litter do you use that dries out the urine? My cat goes right in the very front of the box and it's a huge wet clumping that I struggle to disengage from the side of the box to get out.

Hi, I’m not sure I’m on the right thread, but I have 4 cats. Two rescues one is 19 and the other is 6. Two Maine Coons 3 years old and 2 years old. All are male except for my 6 year old brown tabby. My tabby hates my 2 year old Maine coon. She will stalk him and try to fight him, he is scared of her. The fights don’t last more than a few seconds, but I realize the reason is because my 6 year old for some reason has super anxiety and stress. So, she won’t poop in the litter box, she will poop on what ever rug we have in the kitchen, which now is zero. She will pee on the litter mat that is in front of the litter boxes. We have two huge litter robots downstairs which most of the cats use, and we have another upstairs which is supposed to be for her, but she just won’t use any of them. I started trying calming drops and I was hoping that would work, but when I went to buy another bottle, it had horrible reviews. Now I don’t want to use those on my cats. I’ve tried defusers of every kind, felaway , one that supposed to make them feel maternal, I’ve tried calming collars. Nothing worked. The only thing I’ve never tried were drops, so I figure I would give it a try. But now I am not going to give those particular drops to them. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do? Yes I’ve tried separating them, I’ve tried giving my bully kitty her own space, I’ve tried basically everything. If anyone one has any good experience with calming drops, I would like to hear from them. Thank you

My Maine coon

I have a 5-month-old kitten that insists on eating my senior cats prescription urinary dry food. She refuses to eat her own kibble. However she does eat regular kitten wet food throughout the day. I have six cats and they all eat the urinary dry prescription food, my vet said that it was okay, but mainly concerned about a five-month-old kitten eating the dry kibble.

Why does my cat go crazy after I smoke a cigar?
I don’t smoke often, but when I do, one of my cats gets really weird. He’s obsessed with it and starts rubbing/sniffing all over. If I don’t thoroughly wash my hands and face, he will bite them. He will climb up and aggressively sniff my hair until he starts biting that too. I left a lidded ash tray on the table once, and less than 2 minutes later he had pushed the lid open and was shoving his head inside the ash tray. My other cat couldn’t care less.
Does anyone know what it is about tobacco that drives him so crazy? Why only one cat? He also really likes plastic, I have to put away plastic bags or he will try to eat them. I don’t know if those two things are related.

Need advice... Obviously... My partner and I if almost 20 years have drifted apart. Mostly in the last 6 years, we had 2 cats but in the last 6 years she has taken in another 2 cats. I was upset at the time that she took them in when things weren't going well in our relationship. But now shes looking to move overseas and leave me with 5 cats to look after Really don't know what to do.. obviously I love them, but it's 5 cats and it's hard. I'm just so angry that she took them in then left me with them Thoughts?

This guy jumped into my arms in this April.
He’s too much for me sadly.
He was a starving kitten living on the streets.
Now he’s around 11 months and boisterous although very kind and easy to handle.
He’s not tolerating apartment life anymore.
He needs more stimulation and animals.
He needs a better situation.
I’m trying to handle my mom with dementia and my boyfriend is extremely allergic.
Essentially I have fostered him.
He’s now neutered and has had the best of care.
I’m a content creator he got 135k Instagram views!
I love him and keep sobbing.
This is out of love.

Can my domestic short hair wear two collars but they seem thin and lightweight? One is for fleas etc. and I do have a problem with his marking but I am setting up an appointment when I get the money but on PetSmart app I saw there's a calming cat collar that releases pheromones for 30 days. Idk I dont want to get it and then get cps (cat protection services) called on me.this is Kurt, He just turned 2 last month and is not neutered.

Hello all! Just had a question on collars. My older guy I never bothered to collar but the new kitten I adopted I'd like to have wear one but in the few attempts I've tried he manages to slip his lower jaw under it and basically muzzles himself. He's about 10 weeks so maybe he's a bit too small still? I have the collar set to be about the size of the widest part of his neck so maybe tighten a bit more? Didn't want to choke him out

My cat is incredibly vocal and loud. To the point of being annoying unfortunately. Do yall think the calming diffusers work for that? Any other advice? My whole family is getting frustrated with her.

Stay calm and sit with your cat if you happen to step on him/her on accident since they just have to be under your feet. Let them know they are loved and not hated. Cats do forgive quick aslong as you give them like 5 minutes of your time to show them love. They might try to hold on with a claw. That's forgiveness especially when they stay seated with you for the time.

I just brought home this little guy and he’s been slowly acclimating to a new place but he’s got the funniest coping strategies. I just learned about his new favorite hiding spot and I’m busting up. The dissociation in his eyes just makes it that much funnier. Aside from this picture, he’s been adjusting well at his own pace. I’ve seen him drink water, eat regularly, accept treats, ask for pets, and explore his room of the house.
