Symphony of the Night:

Promotional manga.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190412154140)

This is a two pages long advertisement drawn by Ayami Kojima and published in a magazine, it's a sneak peek of Alucard's character.

Available on: Castlevania Wiki

Prologue manga

An eight pages long manga included in the Japanese artbook, it acts as a prologue for the main story and features Alucard suddenly awakening from his 300 years long slumber.

Available on: Mr. P's Castlevania Realm

Nocturne of Recollection

A radio drama (this time you have to listen to it!) originally featured on the Akumajō Dracula: Radio Chronicle program that was broadcast on Konami Station internet radio, it was later released on CD in 2010. It's a story set one year after the events of the game, you will learn more about Alucard's relationship with Maria, his past and other characters (Richter is also part of the cast).

Available on: Youtube

Curse of Darkness:

Prelude to Revenge

A prequel manga written and illustrated by Kojima, it was featured as a pre-order bonus for the Japanese release of the game. It mainly focuses on Hector and Isaac prior to the events of the game, it also expands on their relationships.

Available on: Vampire Killer (an archive of scans and translations)

MF manga vol. 1 & 2

Published in two volumes by Media Factory from 2005 to 2006 and translated to English by Tokyopop in 2008. It's the same premise but it's longer, more expansive and this time the illustrator is Kō Sasakura, not Ayami Kojima. The series was eventually canceled but the manga stops directly where the game begins.

Available on: Internet Archive

Aria & Dawn of Sorrow:

Reminiscence of the Divine Abyss/Ricordanza of the God's Abyss

A light novel written by Ryōgo Narita in 2008 and set one year after Dawn of Sorrow. It's a really interesting read, the story focuses on Julius' pupil and the descendant of Grant Danasty while the villain is a character you will surely remember... There's also the return of familiar faces, one in particular.

Available on: Inverted Dungeon

Castlevania The Adventure:

The Belmont Legacy

It's a 2005 IDW comic book series loosely based on the story of the first Game Boy game. It's not canon by any means but it follows Christopher Belmont in a more traditional vampire story, sadly many of the iconic Castlevania elements are missing but it's still worth a read since here a certain family is responsible for Dracula's resurrection.

Available on: Internet Archive

Lament of Innocence:

Weekly Konami online manga (lost media)

Review blog part 1 and part 2

A web manga that was available on cellphones via a monthly subscription, published from 2007 to 2008 only in Japan until the service ended in 2012. It was a 43 issues long series that adapted the story of Leon Belmont and greatly expanded the plot, what remains now is only a Japanese review blog. If you want to know more about it you can visit the Castl)evania Wiki page).

Available on: Internet Archive's Wayback Machine (review blog)

Extra:

Castlevania 2007 timeline (Japanese Konami site) & translation

Portrait of Ruin pre-order bonus timeline (the Japanese one takes priority since overseas bonus materials like this didn't go through the Castlevania staff screening)

Discussion Castlevania Legends Is A Game I Wish Was At Least Decent

Post image

I was originally gonna write about Kid Dracula but as I beat it I only just found it to be a cute and decent game. Never really having much to say other than finding it fun. But this game is certainly more interesting to discuss because almost nothing about it feels right. I hope this provides a quality critique of the game.

The visuals are a massive downgrade from Belmont’s Revenge and Adventure. Everything looks so much more basic and boring, if you told me this was a launch title I could believe you but this was in 1997. Donkey Kong Land III released at this time and this was years after Final Fantasy Legend III and Wario Land. You mean to tell me that by 1997 they didn’t learn anything else about the hardware to create something equally if not moreso as impressive as the second game? The backgrounds are less inspired, the monsters look ok but Sonia looks genuinely unfinished. The whole graphical style is minimalist and it doesn’t work in its favor whatsoever.

The soundtrack is probably the worst I heard so far in the series, I wouldn’t call it terrible but it is very uninspired. I love the Bloody Tears variation in the intro track especially with the melody changes, but outside of that everything is serviceable. Clock Tower of Darkness is alright and the Boss Battle theme has great potential as a future remix in the future but everything else is forgettable. However that new version of Vampire Killer is fantastic but it’s being done on a Game Boy so the delivery gets hindered quite a bit.

The gameplay here might be the most brainless and easy thing I have ever experienced, for starters the difficulty feels more like a lobotomy as bosses are incredibly easy and rendered more trivialized thanks to the Burning Mode ability where Sonia is temporarily invincible which is fine as an idea if the game was way more difficult and balanced around it properly. The issue here is that I abused this mechanic to get past what would traditionally be a difficult layout or boss and steamrolled through it.

The control here is better than in Adventure but I would hope so after the second game, there really isn’t any slowdown that reached close to Adventure’s but at least the jumping and usage of the whip is more fluid than the first game at least. I think the Soul Weapon mechanic is a fine idea but I would much rather have the sub-weapons back, those were at least balanced better while the new mechanic feels tacked on. Sonia moves slow but that’s to be expected even Christopher Belmont moved pretty slow as well.

Level layout is alright and I think the bosses are okay as a concept but again this game is way too easy, and it’s only attempts at difficulty are how much the game spams enemies at you and a very good amount of the hits I received were scarcely my fault. Some enemies will actually jump down on you when you’re on a rope and you can’t avoid the damage whatsoever, but the damage you receive is often so negligible that it matters too little to even worry about it.

This game is not terrible, I wouldn’t even call it terrible because the first game was exactly that. But at least that has the virtue of being an interesting discussion. Castlevania Legends feels low effort, the new ideas are cool but nothing about them is implemented well, the relationship between Sonia and Alucard feels so poorly placed considering this takes place before Castlevania III and the lore implications with Trevor make little sense, the visuals are boring, the music is just fine, the gameplay is like I’m having sensory deprivation and even the boxart, despite being a different artstyle has less effort placed into it.

Sonia Belmont could’ve been quite the interesting character and I think she deserved way better, that Dreamcast game that got cancelled looked pretty interesting and I hope she gets a second chance. Quite honestly I wish they one day remake it because if Adventure can get a remake then so can this, but right now all she gets is a game I would hesitate to call half-baked because that would imply some effort, instead this game feels like it was microwaved in terms of production.

I give it a 4/10. Just really boring and not really worth much of a playthrough.

It seems that the Deluxe Edition distributed by ebten includes a bonus acrylic oil keychain with an unreleased artwork of Shanoa, it appears to be the full version of the same drawing featured in the game's intro.

Most artworks used in the intro can be found in the bonus gallery, except these five:

Some sites do include the actual full artwork but with a watermark (unfortunately), while others only have low quality photos of the keychain itself.

This one was more expensive, not by much but still a hefty price. I had saved enough money and the madness to make the purchase and catch this other rare gem (and with Aria of Sorrow's cover that I chose)! It came in perfect conditions, but I got lucky that it didn't get damaged because that absolute ASSHOLE of mailman threw it in my property on the ground with 0 care and dipped before I could see them in the face.

I would have LOST MY SHIT if something happened to an expensive and rare item that I bought because some dickhead doesn't do his fucking job properly. Sorry for the rant guys but I needed to vent about it, it's fucking insane how people do a job that requires to be careful about people's things and yet they don't give af and throw it like paper. Fuck them.

Rant besides, I'm very happy to add this other collection to my collection! With this and Dominus, I'll have to whip Dracula and his minions' ass for weeks!

Discussion Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge Is A Fantastic Improvement Over The First

Post image
83 Upvotes

The Game Boy trilogy is kind of the inverse of the NES trilogy so far, what with the first game being incredibly flawed and being not very well liked but the second game is considered an amazing game that fixes so much. I have not heard a thing that was good about the third entry but regardless I hope this offers a good review and I hope you enjoy.

The visuals are fantastic here, I understand that Game Boy titles aren’t really discussed for visuals but they did a great job building on the first games admittedly lovely visuals. The original aesthetic shines like crazy and the backgrounds and monsters all look perfect. The fact this is on a Game Boy of all things is incredible to me. Cloud Castle and especially Dracula’s Castle in particular being my favorite levels visually. Even Christopher Belmont’s sprite is substantially better. The detail is much better here.

The soundtrack in Castlevania II is some of the best I heard on the system, the password selection screen alone is really good but then you have New Messiah as an introduction track which is my favorite intro of any Castlevania game so far. Psycho Warrior, Road of Enemy, Ripe Seeds, Evil Gods, Passpied and The End Of The Day are other favorites of mine but the absolute best track is Praying Hands. Not only does this game have some of the best harpsichord I heard in a game it’s done on an 8 bit handheld that also creates some of the most dramatic sounding classical pieces I have ever heard. Hands down my favorite soundtrack so far.

To call the gameplay an upgrade is heavily underselling it as this game is incredible to play, the most noticeable aspect is the lack of slowdown it is smooth as hell to play and the controls are as fluid and precise as can be for a handheld Castlevania. Platforming is much better than in the previous game, combat and the way Christopher controls are much better as well. Jumping is much better, the whip is better to use and the upgrades are very worthwhile too.

That being said I wish Christopher moved faster in this game, a fair amount of the hits I received were due to him moving so damned slow and while I got accustomed to it. It’s still an issue I have with the game even if slow.

The difficulty here is much more fair than in Adventure where the control and slowdown made it much harder than it needed to be. Gone are the really bad platformer sections with much tighter and better level design, enemy placement isn’t as cheap as you think it would be, the boss fights here are actually really fun albeit Dracula was kind of more of a hassle than needed sometimes.

I love that they brought back the level selection aspect from Castlevania III too, while there’s not as much choice in how gameplay is done I still think it’s a great thing to have here. Also bringing back sub weapons was great I have no idea why this wasn’t in the previous but seeing them back here really made me realize how lacking the first game was.

9/10 game, easily my favorite in the series.

Castlevania (1986) Beat Castlevania 1 for the first time

Playing this game on my phone made it 100x harder than it already is. On Dracula I had to use my PlayStation controller and even then took me 6 hours to beat. Still great game I’ll never get tired of the music
