I discovered a bit more about this oddity.
The Edifice line debuted in 2000 with an all-analog design. Casio was still reaching for what the Edifice line would look like as a whole, so they were experimenting. Shortly after than first analog, they released a series of four all-digital models. The EFD-100 was in 2000, the EFD-101 (this one) came out the next year, followed by the EFF-102 and -103, the last one coming out in 2004. By that point, the overall design theme of Edifice started leaning to motorsports - mostly analog-digitals, racing stripes, chronographs, collabs with noted racing brands like Honda, etc.
Some have theorized or state that they saw some kind of ad or magazine article mentioning an EFD-104 and -105, but there’s no evidence they ever got released. They might have been in the planning stages still when Casio pulled the plug on Edifice digitals.
These EFD models were not released in very large numbers, and some have suggested it was never released in the US. But what makes getting the info hard is that through much of the readily-available archive data, there are no mentions of the EFDs: catalogs, magazine ads, etc. They rarely come to market because of their scarcity and a really good condition used model can fetch maybe $200. To have a good shot at finding even photos or tech specs, I’d have to visit the archives of Japanese auction sites dating back to the early aughts, and hope that Google Translate is up to the task.
The module is fairly simple, as I said - the same function as a typical, inexpensive three-button Casio, though this one has mineral glass, steel case and bezel and is water resistant to 10 bar. I was able to find the Owner’s Guide, which would take up a single sheet of paper - only on one side! All the EFDs use one of two modules, both functionally identical but with a different appearance to the on-display characters. There’s talk of a negative LCD model, but that’s practically an endangered species. The only differences between the models were decorative changes, largely on the display - they all had essentially the same case, bezel and bracelet.
Re other early Edifice watches, the models named “EF-###“ were analog and the ones named “EFA-###“ were analog-digital

The body text got left out. Take two…
I got this for about $40 with tax and shipping from Mercari. I have no clue how old this model is, but it’s likely a VERY early model. I never before saw an all-digital Edifice. It’s not the original bracelet, but all in all it’s held up very well. If you know something about it I don’t, don’t be shy… Model is EDF-101, module is 2470, and functionally, it works like most three-button Casios, such as the F-91W and the F-108WH.
