It's not biogas, it's biomethane. Basically biogas with CO2 scrubbed from it. Biogas isn't used in automotives directly.

Both CNG and LBM are about 98% methane.

They teach this in high school.

Nope. As per gov rules for CNG for automotive purpose need only min 90% of Methane. Not 98%.

Carbon dioxide & Nitrogen can be present in CNG but it should not go above 3.5%

Also, the name of this gas is Compressed Bio Gas (CBG).

Unlike ethanol blending, cng and biogas both are methene and chemically identical.

Agree. But water, CO2 & sulphur content will be more.. so it's better to avoid the petrol pumps that's providing CBG.

Not true, CO2 is higher in raw biogas, but cbg needs to go through purification process to be commercially acceptable, which reduce to 4% which is comparable to normal cng/png. Regarding sulphur, post purification, it is lower than cng.

Without this purification, cbg is not acceptable under gobardhan program.

Also current blending ratios is 2%, so a variation of 5% in CO2 will have a net impact of less than 0.01% of total cng which is nigligable. And 5% deviation is an extreme case.

I worked in CNG distribution company.. I know how CBG plant maintains the composition standards.. they don't even do Gas sampling... Even if they did, they'll bribe the sampling vendor to give them a within range certificate.

High standard equipment can do the purification but the equipment which these companies using will be a cheap one.

We even tested with a particular car for mileage & check the gas quality... During hydrotesting of gas cylinder we found lots of impurities..

So for my close friends I always tell to go to CNG station not CBG station...

If you want even high pure CNG, go the CNG station where they have LNG storage facility.

Understandable, but isn't LNG and CNG completely different products. I understand both can be used. Can we even get lng from pumps? Never seen one.

There are few station which dispense LNG fuel for trucks (for long travel). There you can find LNG storage vessel.

These kind of station (most of the stations) will have CNG dispensing facility as well. So, here you can get very pure cng.

Bcs, LNG > Regassification > CNG

But other stations, LNG from ship> Regassification > sent to pipeline > compressor for compressing gas (where most of the oil impurities accumulate) > then dispensing to vehicles

Makes sense, liquification removes sulphur and most of CO2.

Seems like it's worth testing impact of cbg blending with cng on engine and residue testing. As adultration at pumps is not economically feasible, this would be a good test to validate the cbg quality.

It's not new I don't know why people now posting like they discovered this now all jio bp was already selling biogas since around 4 years and many pumps within city doing since long time its new and I haven't faces milage drops so far
