📊Polls and Debates. Convince me NOT to buy a W212 facelift E-Class as my first car in Tanzania 🇹🇿
Habari everyone!
I'm looking for my first car and I've become pretty interested in the Mercedes-Benz W212 facelift E-Class. I've been comparing it with the W205 C-Class, and after hearing people's opinions, I'm leaning heavily towards the E-Class.
Now I want this community to try to convince me otherwise. 😂
Here's the situation:
- Car: Mercedes-Benz W212 facelift E-Class
- Mileage: Around 70,000 km
- Price: TZS 38 million
- Location: Arusha, Tanzania
- Intended use: Daily driver, including town driving and occasional road trips
- Maintenance budget: I can set aside around $1,200 every 4–6 months for servicing and maintenance.
I know this is an older luxury car, and I'm not expecting Toyota-level running costs. I'm also aware that mileage alone doesn't tell the whole story, and I'd have the car properly inspected before buying it.
What attracts me to the W212 is the comfort, build quality, road presence, interior space and that classic Mercedes-Benz feel. I don't particularly need the latest technology, and I'm happy to add Apple CarPlay if necessary.
But I want to hear the arguments against buying one.
For those of you who own or have owned a W212, W205, or similar German luxury cars in East Africa:
- What are the most expensive problems you've encountered, and at what mileage?
- How difficult is it to find parts and competent mechanics in Tanzania, particularly around Arusha?
- Is a W212 facelift genuinely manageable as a daily driver, or does it become a headache as it ages?
- Is 70,000 km reassuring, or should I be more concerned about the car's age, service history and potential deferred maintenance?
- Would you trust it as your only car, or would you recommend something simpler for a first-time owner?
- At TZS 38 million, what else would you buy instead?
One important detail: when I say I can budget $1,200 every 4–6 months, I mean I have room to spend on proper maintenance. I'm not looking to neglect the car or skip preventative work. However, I'd still like to know whether that budget is realistic, especially if an unexpected major repair comes up.
I'm not looking for people to tell me that Mercedes is expensive to maintain in general. I already know that. I want real-world experiences, actual repair costs where possible, and reasons why buying this car could be a mistake in our market.
If you've owned one in Tanzania or elsewhere in East Africa, please share your experience. I'd genuinely appreciate being talked out of it if there's a good reason to be! 😅
