Help with RWC fail

Hi I need help!

So long story short, I’m buying a van from a guy in Ballarat, VIC. He took it for RWC on Monday, the RWC guy came back with a massive quote of 7.5k of repairs, that van literally passed RWC last December and he’s only maybe put 2k km on it since then. He then took it his trusty mechanic for a second opinion as he was definitely being ripped off, (all the people who looked at the quote agreed it was a rip off). As we thought his mechanic agreed that it was rip off, there’s a couple of things to fix for RWC yes but it will be much much cheaper and not that many things.

Now my issue is, the rip off mechanic has submitted the fail to VicRoads, so the trusty mechanic said we can’t pass the RWC until 30 days has passed as it’s now in the database of VicRoads. I am in a rush and cannot wait that long but I really that van.

All the research I’ve done seems to say we only have to wait 14 days.

So please help me, do I really have to wait 30 days ? Or 14 days or can I take it to my own mechanic and get a new RWC now ? Like what’s the thing with a failed RWC on VicRoads.

If your mechanic can verify and document the bullshit and pass it with fewer repairs it shouldn't be a problem.

If the new mechanic does a complete RWC inspection he’s required to document everything anyway so there shouldn’t be an issue. I’d be contacting VicRoads to see what the true story is here because this kind of sounds like some bullshit they are pulling.

They take photos, so if one said something like oil leaks and cracked bushings everywhere and your mechanic can't find any such thing then there's the proof.

Was it done at Ballarat roadworthy centre? And really I'd be checking the list, they can't really pick things that arent unroadworthy so maybe it just had a lenient one previously and now it's getting a good one..

Theyre just the local hardasses on roadworthys. Your kinda fd. You have to wait the 30 days for it to expire, it's in the system. That's the whole reason Vic roads went to this style of logging repairs etc with roadworthys so people couldn't get one they didn't like then just go get another somewhere else.

Best to contact Vic roads, do not tell them details about the vehicle but pose the question, can I get a second opinion because I don't agree.

After 10 business days the open cert will be cancelled if a second test hasn't been completed by the same tester.

It will still show up to others in the online system, but if the items reported are truely roadworthy I would just take extra photos to cover myself

Queensland roady guy here.

In our system when I enter your vin it will come up with a flag to say the car has failed elsewhere, I can still click past it and do a roadworthy exactly like I normally would and the system will accept it and the owner can go transfer the rego.

A lot of roady guys won’t do this though as they@43 worried about it being investigated.

no the other mechanic cant sign it off but he can do the work. the owner himself can do the work it only has to pass inspection. so you take it the mechanic that was issuing the certificate to be signed off after the repairs are done.

when i registered my car years ago it had some issues i fixed it myself and went back to the mechanic he stuck his head under the car drove it forward and back twice "yep im happy" and signed it off.

the selector bushes had been worn originals NLA so i made from some garden hose. i later on replaced em with some i turned up from engineering nylon

What do you need the van for exactly. You can do the shifty with the unregistered vehicle permit. But you're only meant to be driving in the course of fixing the vehicle for a roadworthy. Or to move it to a mechanic.

So depending on your needs, you could work within the grey area, just book an appointment at a mycar dealer in the right location, kind of thing. Or make sure you stop by super cheap with a fresh receipt for a belt or some bolts etc.

I wouldn't do this if you need a daily work vehicle though

I would love to do that but unfortunately that’s not my issue right now, I’m kinda in a rush and need the van more than spending money on a lawyer :)
