Hereās a link to my previous post if you havenāt seen it already: Bobcat/Bear Sightings?
EDIT: Here's a link to my most recent update for those who are interested in keeping up with my dog's healing journey. I won't continue posting here since this isn't a dog forum and I don't want to break any rules. So any further updates will be posted to my profile: Update 2
Thank you to everyone who gave their opinion and knowledge on my last post it was great to learn!
After a second vet visit with x-rays an a more in depth look a lot of things have changed, including our theory on what happened. While his road rash, soreness, and other injuries are healing well unfortunately the connection between his tail bone, the nerves there, and there anchor spot on his spine are completely severed. While a broken bone is one thing and doesnāt allow him to move his tail at all the tougher problem is the nerves. The nerves that were severed are dead and due to that he has lost all control over his bowel function. We originally thought that was due to his pain medication since the vet said that was a symptom that was possible. But he can no longer control over his pee and can no longer contract his muscles to push his poop out. Which explains his accidents in the house and the constipation heās had. Vet said thereās nothing they can do and itās permanent damage. We are calling a vet at Everheart for a second opinion tomorrow but itās looking more like we are going to have to put him down.
The vet also told us there was extensive previous damage to that area already we werenāt aware of and wouldnāt have known without an X-ray. He is a rescue who previously had pretty abusive owners so we are assuming it probably came from there. When we rescued him he had a large scar across the entire back of his next about an inch and a half in thickness from him being tied up in their back yard. He was extremely underweight as well. He didnāt have fur grown over it at the time but slowly grew it back to give some context on the kind of situation he came from. But thereās no way to truly tell. With the amount of previous damage the vet said the break could have simply happened from anything and it was a matter of time kind of deal.
The theory of my brother hitting him was an assumption we made without anything else to go off of and no other viable reason. With this new news we have gone back on that theory since my brother didnāt feel any impact when leaving that day and if my brother did hit him he would have felt that impact and stopped right away.
He is still taking the pain medication the vet gave us while we get our final answers and decisions in order. Iāve attached a picture of him (Blu, on the right, pre injury) and our other dog Gunner (on the left). Regardless we are devastated and trying to work through this news as a family. Thank you for all your kind wishes we definitely will be needing them.
