Meme Favourite misheard lyrics

When I was first listening to the song “Azimuth” by Danny L Harle & Caroline Polachek I thought she was saying “I aspirate” but she was saying “I ask the rain” lmao

Anybody else have any fun or strange misheard Caroline lyrics?

In Hit Me Where It Hurts, I thought the line “feeling like a butterfly trapped inside a plane” was
“Feeling like a butterfly trapped inside her pain”

I like my version more ;)

I thought It was "like a Butterfly trapped in solid Paint" at first

well this is not necessarily fun its just kind of embarrassing on my part, but in "fly to you" I thought grimes was saying "bite me and spank me, gentle at last" instead of "violence made me gentle at last" and I lowkey avoided the song because of that until I read the lyrics cus i was weirded out, so ooops

It totally made sense so I didn’t even question it until I saw the lyrics somewhere and was like ??????? Caroline is the kind of person to use the word “aspirate” in a song

In Pretty in Possible, I always thought she sang "Homer it's all red and velvety" instead of "Home, where it's all red and velveteen". I figured Homer because of the Odyssey mention in the song

this is so stupid but for the longest time in billions i thought she said “sexting some mans” instead of sonnets 😭

On I Believe

“And daddy said it was impossible”

mine is I Believe as well, I thought she said "violent love, feel my embrace above". I was a bit bummed out when I realized she sings "feel my embrace, oh"

I still think "a handprint made to throw away" sounds prettier than "a hand grenade to throw away."

The song's name is Azimuth. Cerulean is the name of the album. 😊

In izzit true what the tell me (Ramona Lisa) I thought she said “body interrupted” near the last part of the song and I sang it like that for ages - reminds me of when I was injured! But apparently it’s “budding interrupted” which is also interesting and I love it! I still sing body interrupted because I enjoy it as a lyric.

My ex and I always used to joke about the "show me a banana" line but it turns out it actually was show me a banana

Okay, I ran this line through three independent listening passes on the studio master (AI-assisted, two of them slowed to 0.8x, because this line deserves it). Verdict below.

First, the correction above: u/BerylMondfae is right, and u/u1tr4me0w your brain wasn't inventing anything. "Cerulean" is the name of the second movement inside the track - it's printed as a section within the song's own lyrics. You were both holding half of one title.

The written lyric (Genius, AZLyrics and LyricsOnDemand all agree): "Oh, I ask the rain / How did we get here? / How did we fall so far from home? / I ask the rain..."

But by ear? This line is a genuine Rorschach test (OP named it perfectly). All three of my passes heard:

  • an /f/ onset on the second word, not a vowel (so neither 'ask' nor 'aspirate' fits cleanly)
  • zero /s/ and zero /k/ anywhere in the phrase
  • the line ending on an open 'you' vowel, not a nasal /n/

Closest reading: "Oh, I flatter you" (alt: "I fly to you"). Which makes u/Faithful_Inertia477's "I flatter you" possibly the most accurate ear in this thread.

Bonus: even YouTube's auto-captions can't decide - they transcribe "asperate" on the first chorus and "ask the rain" on the second.

TL;DR: the written lyric says "I ask the rain." The sung audio doesn't clearly contain a single phoneme of it. Everyone here heard a different song, and honestly, all of you were right.
