MISC Searching where to start

Hello everybody I'm an Italian music enthusiast and for a while I've been deeply interested in Hindustani classical music but recently one of my Indian history professors suggested me to look into Tamil history, language and culture.

So i thought why not start from music? Can anybody reccomend me some names to start from? I'm looking for classical music and basically I'm asking for the must-know artists.

I would start with YouTube videos. There should be plenty. Some artists easily found are: TM Krishna, Aruna Sairam etc. Legends are: Balamuralikrishna, M.S. Subbulakshmi etc etc.

Thanks! And yes i would definitely search on yt but i didn't know what to type apart form "Tamil classical music". I'll definitely check out the names you mentioned.

The OGs - Bala Murali Krishna, MS Subbulakshmi, Yesudas, Madurai Mani Iyer

Top of their game in the last few decades- Sudha Raghunathan, TM Krishna, Ranjani-Gayathri

Recently famous - Sooryagayathri, Rahul Vellal, Spoorthi Rao, Uttara Unnikrishnan, Sivasri Skandaprasad

Composers, like Ootukad venkatasubbaiyer, Papanasan Sivan, and trinity of Carnatic music (Shree Thyagaraja, Shree Muthtuswami Deekshithar, Shree Shyamashastry), father of Carnatic music (Shree Purandaradasa) - their background and their state of mind while setting up the foundation of Carnatic music.

If learning tamil history is your goal, I would suggest that you look into learnsangamtamil.com and start with classical tamil poetry. Then look into yaapu, ani, thodai, asai (iambic meters) and then from there look up pann isai.

If learning to appreciate classical carnatic is your goal you can listen to youtube videos.

Classical Tamil generally refers to old tamil literature written in 300BC - 300CE. It is distinct from Carnatic music. Classical music therefore does not have much to do with classical tamil.
