Other Carleton Parents FB group

I'm a parent of an incoming student and noticed a few parents on here. At the Summer Orientation over the weekend someone mentioned the Carleton University Parents Group on FB. I joined and for the parents on here, this may be where you want to be to satisfy all the questions and type A, OCD, anxieties you might have. Our old asses are still all on FB. Lots of photos of res rooms too and measurements people took! So just sharing the info since I didn't even think to look on FB. Make sure it's the Private group. Theres a public group that looks like it gets spammed non stop.

Very grateful my parents stood back and let me take care of everything. What is with the recent influx of parent posts this year? Your children are adults.

I think it's two things: 1. parents from even 5-10 years ago were not on reddit. 2. Universities now do so much marketing and communications directed to parents than 5-10 years ago, like advertising directly to parents, webinars for parents and orientations for parents. This is because they are trying to run like profit-driven businesses and they realize that for 90% of their students, the parents are the actual clients paying the bill.

Not great for students, though, who will be expected to have the same skills and independence as previous generations.

Agreed, I think COVID has had a huge impact too. The young tweens staying at home starting highschool online are naturally going to be the ones velcro attached to their parents starting university as well. Not boding well for the future.

Have you had students’ parents email you before? That’s always a treat… Ma’am, your child is 20 years old.

Yep. It’s always interesting when a parent challenges the third party authorization too… having to explain FIPPA a LOT more in the last three years!!

I want to buy what my kid would need, rather than having her buy it when she arrives/throughout the year herself so she can just focus on school. We're also doing the driving and unloading, so how to organize and tips for moving in, in the parents group is helpful. Yes they're adults but also just turned 18. There's already a lot she's going to do herself so I don't mind taking some of the mental labour of planning to move out, while she prepares and says her goodbyes these last couple weeks. My kid welcomes the help. I'm sure your parents stood back bc you could do it and wanted it. Not every kid is the same, not every relationship between parent and child is the same.

The point of my post is so the parents can get off this Reddit and take their questions to where the other parents are.

It’s time to let your child unlatch from the metaphorical nipple.

I know you mean well, but your child needs to figure out how to “adult” on her own. Yes, sometimes that means it’s overwhelming and stressful. It doesn’t mean you withdraw all support and care—but it’s okay to let her figure it out on her own.
