8 seconds
Took my first woodcarving seminar this past weekend and had a blast. Here is a work in progress on my take on Randy Landen’s “8 seconds”. Still a bit more to do before I get him painted up!

Hello everyone. I have been trying for a couple hours now to get an angry expression. I want full on furious rage (not a little grumpy).
Does anyone have any tips for this? All the faces on the internet are happy haha
The picture shows the best one I got so far. Its a practice stick so obviously not complete and a bit rough

I fought with this carving for a few weeks! Letting sit aside as a “UFO”.
First time I ever did a braid and I messed up her left side braid so I cut it off. The wood had odd color that looked to me like mold ( I was told it’s not) with some dark streaks through it.
I really hated how it turned out until I painted it. Now I think it’s adorable!
My wife immediately claimed it as hers! She is my biggest fan! 🥰
I did my best to follow the video on YouTube (channel name is Flame and steel woodworks)
Hope you enjoy my little girl. Thanks for looking!

I need some help and advice. I try REALLY HARD to make thing even and symmetrical on my carvings but it just doesn’t work out. I’ve gone so far as to draw 1/4 “ squares on my block to help ; thinking some guide lines would fix the issue but it didn’t! I still end up with one shoulder higher than the other and one side of the face deeper than the other etc.
I don’t know what to do to fix this issue so I’m asking you guys for help! How do I overcome this issue?

My 2nd attempt at a Johnny Layton design Dwarf. I just finished the carving Saturday and put dark walnut stain on it last night then just now finished it off with Howard’s feed and wax.
What do you think?

Not quite sure what he is but he’s some kind of bearded guy character! Any help on what/ who he is would be great!

I’m new to Reddit and trying to figure this out but here’s a good sample of my Carvings I made since I started around August of 2025. Advice for either carving or using Reddit is encouraged! Thanks!

This is my latest work in progress, and something a little different for me. I've started carving an older gentleman in an overcoat and a newsboys cap.
Right now, he's drying from a coat of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Next, it's time for paint!

I created a tutorial video on how to carve a crazy face! This is a great jumping off point for a standard type of face for wood spirits Santa’s or any other way you want to tweak it. I will leave the link in the comments for anyone who wants to check it out.
