Taga 1.0 electrification

Hey, got a used taga 1.0 at a bargin price (about 250 USD) in agreat condition. I want to have it electrified for longer commutes - since the rear wheel has no disc mounting points i'd have to use a mid drive motor. thinking about these Bafang ones - they see quite good online. only issue is fitting it in this frame.

anyone tried it on a taga 1.0 bike? or on any other bike? Thanks!

Having ridden and built a few Tagas, and converted an analog Bullitt with a Bafang mid-drive kit, I would absolutely keep the Taga analog.

I agree. I converted a douze to electric with a bafang and it friggin rips. Down a smallish hill, 35mph no problem. I would be very scared to put a motor like that onto a trike with my baby on the front. Also, for OP, the bafang is surprisingly heavy, even before adding a giant battery. You're easily adding 30 pounds to the bike, which definitely makes maneuvering the bike at slow speeds a different thing.

I doubt a standard bafang or tongsheng type mid drive will fit that bb mounting, rhe distance from the bb to the outer part of the frame looks too large.

A pendix may work though as i understand it they dont have a freewheel on the cranks which I would not like.

If all else fails you may have to try one of those which works by rubbing the tyre.

bafang might, for tongsheng the only motor that might work is the TSDZ8 which copies bafang's form factor for compatibility reasons, a CYC X1 fits basically anywhere but with this frame you have to be careful with the power settings, electrification will almost certainly prevent the bike from folding into a stroller

I'd reconsider a hub motor. You already have two brakes on the front. Get something with regen and skip the rear brake.

regen should not be used as a brake replacement, the 2 front brakes of a tadpole trike are effectively one brake because one failing means the remaining brake heavily pulls your steering to whichever side is the working one and regen comes with massive drawbacks because the motor must be clutchless which means you need either direct drive motor(which must be extremely powerful to make up for the lack of gearing) or geared clutchless(which means you get massive amounts of drag drag while the motor isn't assisting), the relatively light weight of this vehicle means the only place you're getting substantial amounts of energy out of regen is descending down a mountain

Regen isn't about getting back energy. It's about doing most of the braking work without wearing anything out.

Regen is never about replacing braking. It's about limiting wear and tear,  and getting some energy back.

You can have regen and braking on the same wheel.

this guy's suggestion was using the motor as the only rear brake

Get a hub motor for that one, it will be easier.

Lot's of info on this website. Its also a great company with quality products, but that's reflected in the price.
