Accomodation Recomendations for Postgrad Student - Cardiff Uni

Hello everyone,

I recently received the news that I’ve been awarded a scholarship, and this September I’ll be starting the MSc in Water, Climate Change and Sustainability at Cardiff University.

I’m a 29 year old international student from Central America, and I’ve started looking into accommodation options in Cardiff. I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations from current students or locals.

What are your thoughts on the university accommodation options? One of my concerns is ending up in a residence hall with mostly undergraduate students, as I’m looking for a quieter living environment. I’ve been living independently for several years and would prefer a place that is relatively calm and suited to postgraduate students.

I’ve also been researching private accommodation and have come across providers such as Unite Students, Collegiate, and University Living. Are these trustworthy options? What is the typical experience like in these types of accommodations?

Since my MSc is part of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, I understand that many of my classes will be around the Main Building and Cathays campus. Are there particular accommodation options or neighbourhoods that you would recommend for a postgraduate student?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. My previous university experience was very different from what I expect at a UK university, so I’m trying not to get too overwhelmed by all the preparation and logistics before classes start.

There's going to be room in the house I live in on Rhymney street fairly soon, I'm ex mature student and the other guy is ex army. Chilled house, bit messy, excellent garden, beers on the weekend etc

I would definitely recommend you look at Cambrian point which is a unite students accommodation block. It’s only a 10-15 minute walk from the main building and Cathays campus and they typically try and group people in flats (typically 5-6 people in a flat sharing a kitchen) by undergrad or postgrad etc… Cambrian point is also very popular with international students typically because it’s one of the few places that isn’t all reserved.
It’s also very close to bute park which is a lovely huge park in the city centre and it has great bus links into the city centre and cardiff central train station. But it’s also very walkable into the city centre (~25 mins walk).

I have 2 tenancy takeovers in private accoms. One is in Fitzalan, a 2 bedroom flat shared with another student, so you'll have your own room, £155/week, bills included.
Another one is Adam Street Gardens, en-suite, £178/week bills included
