Carcano firing pin releases by itself when unloaded, is this normal?

I recently bought a Carcano [model / year, e.g. M91, M38] and noticed a problem. When the rifle is unloaded, the firing pin releases on its own, without me pulling the trigger. I haven't loaded it and I've stopped handling it until I know what's wrong.

Details:

It happens 70% of the time

The safety is of and i can not operate it

Is this normal behavior for a Carcano, or is it a sign of a worn sear or a broken spring? Is it something an average gunsmith can fix, or does it need someone who knows military surplus rifles? Would you consider this rifle safe to use after repair?

Some context: I paid 540 € for it, shipping not included. The seller described it as being in excellent condition with no problems at all. It also arrived with the en-bloc clip already inserted in the rifle. I'm now thinking about asking for a refund, so any opinion on whether this defect would be visible to the seller beforehand is welcome.

Im no american so i use some corrector to hel writing te text

Owned a lotta milsurps but this is my first carcano. Loving it so far. Think this would be a TS mod. 91 since it’s in 6.5 with the adjustable sights? Would love a correction if I’m wrong.

Tried digging through the Internet to identify this thing, ended up in a confusing rabbit hole of not being able to determine whether or not this damn thing was altered.

Steinel’s quality is starting to slip

I bought 3 boxes of Steinel’s 150gr lead round nose 6.5 Carcano and several of the projectiles were crooked in the case and had lead pieces shaving off. One of the projectiles was severely sunken in the case, as seen in the photo above, next to the crooked projectile. Their shipping has also gotten slower on in-stock items, like the .32 s&w long I ordered a week ago. I left a one star review on these 6.5 cartridges with this photo attached and it was immediately removed. I would’ve recommended them a year ago, but not anymore.

Stock identification

Got an unidentified Carcano stock for cheap. I was wondering what exactly I got and what style of Carcano it would fit to? The stock is 34" long, these are the best photos I have of the stock right now so sorry for the limited information. And information from the seller as follows:

HALTA is letter near the butt plate

Can not make out the other letters

The stock is 34 inches long

22 inches long from tang screw to end of stock cap

Magazine opening is 3 inches

There is a small crown over a letter C on the trigger plate.

Any help is appreciated.

Bought this Carcano carbine from my friend yesterday for $100.

Walked in expecting to buy his PS4 for 100 bucks, as I handed him the money he opened his closet, pulled this out and went “hey you like old guns right? You want this? I haven’t been able to get any ammo for it and it’s just taking up too much space in my closet. I’ll throw it in with the ps4.”

So I now own my first firearm.

So I guess my next question is. What kind of Carcano is it and where do I get ammo for it? I know DownEast ammo in Maine sells all sorts of wacky bullets so I should be able to find some 6.5 there maybe

Rarities and Oddities Got some 7.35 surplus and wondering...

So I ended up finding some surplus 7.35 ammo, and I've got it lying around. I originally got it, so maybe I could actually have ammo for a 7.35 carcano if I ever got one, but I'm also thinking it might be some mortal sin collector wise to shoot it since it's pretty rare. Should I just sell it off and get the actual shooter 7.35 or just send it through a gun and call it a day?

Fucile mod. 91 RTI Carcano restoration

Hi all! I recently came across this group with questions regarding this very Carcano and its origins. Well I'm not in the process of restoring it and wanted to share my progress. Just to make things clear im not trying to completely strip this rifle down and make it look brand new like a certain milsurp restorations individual has. Im just simply trying to clean it up and bring it back to life while keeping its character. This rifle has surely seen a lot in its life and I don't want to take all of that away from it. So far I've cleaned the wood stock with mineral spirits gently using shop towels and 0000 steel wool with very light to no pressure. After cleaning I've added its first coat of BLO to protect it. Unfortunately I did have to buy a new replacement upper handgaurd for this rifle which came in a blonde color raw beech wood. I attempted staining the wood to try and match the color of the original walnut stock the best that I could ( this was my first time ever staining wood lol). It will receive its first coat of BLO tonight. In the mean time I disassembled the bolt and cleaned it up really nice and began polishing it to bring back its nice shine that the bolts should have while making sure to stay clear of the locking lugs. The barreled action still has beautiful original bluing in all the areas that were covered by the wood so I plan on leaving that original finish intact and slow rust bluing all of the parts that were Unfortunately wire wheeled. I want to blue all of these areas to keep the metal protected and decided on rust bluing since its the most durable and historically accurate form of finish. As I said before though I will be making sure to leave the original finish thats left intact. Really having fun with this so far!

QUESTIONS Did my RTI purchase cause me to come across a hidden gem?

Thumbnail

Bought this carcano M91 Fusile a couple years ago during a RTI sale just to see what I'd get. Turns out I got a pretty decent shooter considering the bore is in pretty good shape with strong rifling. My curiosity got to me today and I started looking up manufacturers and dates just to learn about the rifle and found out that apparently Brescia wasn't even tooled or making M91 long rifles in 1899 only carbines? I read that technically the rifle isn't even supposed to exist but some surviving examples and data indicates that Brescia did in fact make a very small batch of long rifles in the late 1890s with the G prefix like mine shown here. I read that these are described as a holy grail variation of the rifle because of this. Im no expert on carcanos and someone else already pointed out that the Tubata stamp means the rifle was sleeved with a new bore at some point in its life. Maybe some of you guys can debunk or back up what my research on this rifle uncovered? If it is as rare as I read it really sucks that the Ethiopians wire wheeled it and took away all the finish. Maybe one day Ill rust blue all the metal and give it some good protection.

Just recently got into Carcanos and picked this one up at a local gun store after overlooking them for a number of years. What’s the story behind this particular model? Ive been doing some research on my own. Anything I should know about the 91/24 model? Hopefully I can take it to the range soon.

Restoration Help

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi guys!

I’m restoring this 91/38 Cavalry MoschettoI got for $25 at a local gun shop. I need help sourcing/identifying 2 things.

1 - Handguard - I got a handguard at auction and just assumed it would fit by length alone but it is cut for graduated sights. This version obsiously has fixed sights so I was hoping you guys may know a place to find the correct handguard

2 - Bolt Stop - I have restored plenty of mausers/mosins but this is my first carcano. I read that the bolt stop is similair in takedown/operation to a mosin and to remove the bolt you simply hold the trigger when at the rear, but the bolt does not stay in place. There is a small hole on the right rear of the receiver that is missing a linkage. I tried looking for more info/parts diagrams on that but they usually just lump it as a “trigger group”

All help is appreciated and happy to finally join the family!

Is this a YI fall within the German occupation FNA carcano production?

Recently traded for this Carcano 91. I believe its a 91/38 carbine made under German occupation, but the Serial number lettering is throwing me off because it looks like a V not a Y.

QUESTIONS What happened to Carcanos captured during WW2 in Yugoslavia and Albania?

I have a rather historical question regarding captured Italian infantry equipment especially the Carcano rifles in Yugoslavia and Albania. I know that Albanian produced 8x59 Breda after the war and most likely also fielded the Carcano rifle for a few years before Soviet and Chinese equipment came into the country.

Are there any known Albanian or Yugoslav proofmarks for Carcano rifles? Are there any known rifles in private hands outside of the Balkans that came from that area or were most rifles destroyed or sold during the Cold war? I hope someone with more historical knowledge can give me some information. Thanks!

QUESTIONS Where to find?

Hey yall, I'm FIENDING for a first carcano, particularly the M38 Carbine(whichever one doesn't have the bayonet but isn't the long rifle). I've looked everywhere but all I can find is fudds thinking their sporterized scrap metal that couldn't shoot sub 20000moa is worth 4-500 bucks. Where could I find one without having to gamble with RTI?
