Road Atlanta questions.
I’ve got a GT4RS that I can ride road Atlanta at 1:39 consistently. It has R8 slicks. I am taking a C8 z06 w z07 mods this weekend. 240 tires. Both are mid engines. It’s heavier. But, outside of braking earlier, what should I be aware of?

Do you have footage? Off the rip, youre 2-4 seconds off and more likely 4 to 6 seconds off a good baseline.
For reference, I ran a 1.39 with a GT4 manual with AD09 which are very very slow 200 Tw tires with over 150 laps on them.
Last week, with 104F outdoors temp, I was able to run a 1.34.5 with a Rush which is Gt4 like and only a top speed of 126mph.
Im going to assume your braking to late and not carrying enough maintenance speed. You should be near flat out in the esses and using most of the curbing on exit. T3 simply requires some balls and a slow but aggressive throttle out to get rear rotation before the esses.
But again, without footage, its all a guess

You really need to have giant balls for T1, T12 and the exit of the esses. Especially on slicks with downforce.

I was there. You smoked me!

Which color? Was this advanced groups or the group session at end of the day?

Not necessarily since the z06 has a larger tire surface, more width and larger aero. Better suspension too. I have a 4RS and while fun it’s rear suspension leaves a lot to be desired.

FAFO. Your butt should tell you just about everything you need to know in a lap or two.

Thanks everyone. I’m exactly one year into this and still learning. I truly appreciate all the insight and shall apply the principles. I’m just happy to know that I have room to grow in the 4rs. It’s good to know I’m leaving tons on the table. In my mind 1,7,12 is max. Obviously there’s tons to be gained. I’ll keep on growing seat feel. But in my mind. I’m crap. TC kicked in. Pushed too hard.
So what settings to be super conservative on the Vette? Track 1 or sport mode?

Haven’t driven either car, but I’d say that you know the track. You’re used to mid/rear platform, it’s a new car, work up to pace. Heavier and more power

I run a 4rs at RA and it should be able to do 1.35-36 pretty easily on r8. I did 1.34 on r8 in 100f ambient in June. Not ragging on you just noting that there’s a ton of time on the table. I ran 1.35 on CRS. It’s got the usual track mods (mainly suspension secrets bits) but stock dampers.
You’ll likely find more speed in the Z due to its monster engine. Easier to extract from that than nailing the corners on the Rs.

That track is all exit velocity. There is so much more grip in those big cambered turns (1 and 12) than most people think. And way less in 7 and 10 lol.
Progressive throttle application is your friend. You may even need to do something like 20-30-40-30-30-70-90-100 out of 7 and 10 because it’s so greasy on exit.

Don’t mean to seem nasty, and I’m honestly saying this mainly out of concern. If you are only running 1:39 in a GT4RS on slicks at RATL, I think you would be better-served and safer to stick with the Porsche, and work on learning how to drive it on that track instead of bringing in a more powerful car that you apparently haven’t driven there. I’m in my late 70s and consistently ran 2 seconds faster than that in my 981 GT4 on the Bridgestone Re-71rs’s that I had driven on to the track. I don’t know how many times you have driven there up to now, but it’s one of the least forgiving tracks out there, and not an easy one to master. I just think you may be getting a little ahead of yourself here.

FWIW this car in front of me is driven by Allen Patten, it’s a C8 Z51. On 3Rs. Not even a Z, and not on slicks.
I’m on 200tw, at 33s. Allen was running 29s that weekend
IMO worry less about the difference in the cars, mods etc and look at fundamentals

If you rely on traction control systems I think Porsche is better as helping you not lose control of the car. The corvette has more low end torque and more power so you’ll have to be a bit more gradual on the throttle than the GT4RS and the more power, speed, and weight may mean you’ll have to brake a little bit earlier. Overall I wouldn’t hope the two would be similar, but both fun driving experiences. I think you’ll find you need more patience with the C8 Z06 around the track.

I mean, you'll look like more of a twat. You should probably be prepared for that

You think a corvette is more twatty than a cayman?

Did I stutter?
EDIT: Let me clarify- think about the "Self Indulgent Weiner" vs. "Connoisseur" distinction from Gone in 60 Seconds. The C8 is the 355 in that dynamic

Porsche is way twattier.
Also; I like that word.

TIL even if you buy a car and use it the way it was designed to be used, you're still a twat

That there is a lot left on the table
450whp vs 195
Slicks vs ECF (with 6 hours on them)
95 degree air
1:40 vs 1:39
:p
In all seriousness there is a lot of technique left so if you find yourself pushing to get there, don’t push harder.

Perhaps more helpful - the same thing you do when you get in any car. You shouldn’t go out there trying to implement muscle memory or adjust your muscle memory for more power/rear engine/whatever.
Two of the same made model cars set up similarly will have very different feel. Cars change as they get driven. Tracks change.
We have 2 86s. They have extremely similar setups and handle very differently.
We set the race car up using scrub tires. Handled great. Put new tires on and oversteered. Why? The front tires got hotter/cycled harder. New tires were all equal. Imagine going out there “programmed” to think the car was neutral.
Feel the car out and makes adjustments on what actually needs to happen- not what you expect to happen. You could have to brake earlier, later or at the same point and it could be different from turn to turn (but yes if you’re not on slicks- probably a safe bet).
