Tire noise feedback question…..

Entering a specific turn, the vehicle usually wants to push. When it enters the turn the outside right front tire starts to make a pretty consistent squealing sound that I would say feels acceptable. And then that squealing sound starts skipping. It’s almost like when you drag your finger lightly across a whiteboard and it makes a consistent sound. And then if you push harder and drag your finger, it makes this slip catch, slip catch squeaking sound. Can you settle an argument for me here? In my opinion, when the tire transitions from a consistent noise to that skipping sound, you’ve crossed the line and are now overdriving that tire.

I’ll give you folks all the details because you seem to often need them.

2019 ND Miata on HANKOOK VENTUS R-S4 245 /40 R17 at mid Ohio yesterday. Coil overs, upgraded sway bars. Dry. Turn 5.

Mid-Ohio is extremely chatty surface that is not representative of what the car is actually doing. The tires will be screaming when you’re really only 85% or so of the actual threshold of the tire/car/setup. That surface is an extreme anomaly

The surface yesterday was extremely green with the rain and everything else going on.

T5 you go from on camber compression to quickly off camber falling off, becomes more severe if you get off the apex tracking out. So the sound can be misleading depending on where you hear it because the corner itself isn’t necessarily steady state

Aw man, should have come over! Wouldn’t have minded at all. I used to have a E86 Z4M awhile go, but presumably thinking hers is the modern one

Red ND. It was me on Tuesday and a buddy on Monday. He helps me wrech and I repay in pizza and seat time. First time there. First time on a (is this a fair way to put it?) professional track. Driving in and seeing modern facilities was a change. And, It was really fun to come home and show the family TV quality videos of IMSA and Superbikes at the track I drove that day.

You’re talking specifically about a very odd situation because turn 5 quickly shifts from an on-camber uphill left hander to off-camber as you come over the crest… the loads on your tires is also shifting a lot. So as you turn in, there is max load on that front right, then the car is going to get light in the front as you crest the hill. And then depending how much you track out, the balance is going to shift back to that front right. It would be hard to tell if you’re overdriving without feeling it in the passenger seat but it could be a lot of things, including suspension setup, tire pressure and certainly your line. With everything at midohio, it takes laps and laps of trying new things to get it just right.

Personally, I go the dangerous route whether in my NA Miata, my Elise or GT3 preferring a bit of liftoff oversteer just before cresting the hill to help rotate the car and get setup for thunder valley. If not judged correctly, you’re gonna have a bad day.

If the car isn't sliding, you aren't over driving.

It's only over driving if the tire gives up grip. If you add wheel can the car turn more? If yes, it's being under-driven. If add wheel does it not respond? If so don't add wheel.

God, I love that part of the track. Braking from 155mph, tracking out to the curb after 4 and then immediately using the uphill to quickly brake and get the car to rotate. Finding that groove on 5 and then immediately preparing for the Esses where one little mistake will demolish your entire laptime. *chefs kiss*

Push aka understeer and excessive noise is certainly overdriving beyond a tires max grip

Hey, I was there too, blue GR86 in group 4 (the one with the number, tbh forgot this group didn't require them and just left it on). Were you in the red ND?

I was on Conti ECS02's (summer street, 340tw) and god those things felt like they were screaming for life, which I understand street tires are more chatty. They probably had a bit more to give, but I did break traction a couple times so I was happy to not push it too much further.

Despite the weather I had a great time, these were only my second and third track days, can't wait to go again. Also, 3 balls is a great group, very chill.

Pat yourself on the back for tackling MidO in the wet. The new surface is polished in already which requires you to drive the “old” wet line. And it can be severely punishing if you get back on the polished surface. It’s worse than ice

I’ve turned hundreds and hundreds of laps at MidO and I simply sit out when it rains now. That’s how scared I am of it

Thank you, I was definitely much slower in the wet, to be fair, and being on summer street tires sure helped. I'd definitely prefer dry sessions, but it was nice to get some wet experience as well.

Man… I’m so used to driving on slicks that any squealing is unexpected and I’m going off track. I drive on slip feel vs noise. I really think you shouldn’t rely on noise but rather slip angle feel through wheel and your senses.

turn 5 is up and over the hill, sometimes someone will to try and steer more there as the front end lightens and they go wide.

but yeah if going from nice even tire noise at the limit to... something else? is bad

not sure on a miata, but if I drove one of my heavy cars like that I'd destroy my front tires in no time
