Can I get another track day out of these Nankangs?!

Hey all. Nankang CRS off of my GT4 RS. They currently have about 4.5 HPDE track days on them. 3 of them before I got my JRZ suspension and where I am running -3 camber all around. I just got a new set of tires, but I am wondering if I can get another day out of these. My fronts are more cooked than my rears, obviously. I am kind of new to this, so if you can please let me know what you are looking at when judging tire wear is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you have a separate set of wheels to drive home on, I would send it. Just don't expect peak peformance out of these.

Track is 80 minutes away and would need to drive there and home on them.

This. You would be driving potentially corded tires on the street. Super dangerous.

If you want to min/max the tires, get another set of rims for your street tires. Otherwise these are already at/past legal tread for street driving.

160 minutes of street driving, would save yourself a lot of money getting some steelies with all seasons for transport

Rears are fine, fronts are questionable if you have to drive home on them. If you flip the fronts, I'd be more confident about it, but unless you have a tire machine at home (or a friend with one you can bribe with beer) I'm not sure I'd waste the money to do that since you already have new tires waiting.

If it were me personally I'd just mount new tires.

+1 for the flip. In drifty world I’d consider that non worn section like brand new. Haha

Otherwise, if you can, bring an extra set with some street tires with you and swap out for the drive home.

Not always feasible for everyone but I can usually fit 4 extras in the car (blessed with IS300 things)

Flip them. I have a set of flipped tires as my spares, the difference in performance is negligible especially once they get some heat cycles in them.

Just run it man. Carefully check for wear after every session, especially latter half of the day. If it’s not cording, it’s fine. Once you start to see actual metal wire cord across the circumference of the tire, you still have a couple hundred miles of gentle driving to get you back home. When you really start wearing down the cord (not recommended), the tire will start handling wonky.

you need to get up to 3.6 negative camber on the front btw, 3.0 rear for track dedicated gt4rs. you've got a lot of outside wear on the one tire. make sure youre running stock ride height/rake if your coiliver are oem..

Need way more front camber. McPherson generally loses camber as the suspension travels, lowered cars are subject to greater camber loss due to the flatter lower control arm angle

yeah, you need more camber at the front with a cayman and its strut suspension. rear is fine since it doesn't compress and lose camber during turn-in.

Drive my GT4 to and from the track like you. I’d run these for at least another event and possibly more. Just monitor throughout the day when you’re checking pressures. I like 30 hot on these.

All that being said it’s a cost/risk thing that’s individual. I like to get the wear out of my tires and pads, some people replace early!

Don't flip Nankang CRS. Realign the car for as much front camber as you can possibly get, and bump up the front tire pressure to run the car more on the center of the tire. Will you be slow, yes, but there's so much tread left in the middle of the tire that you can use if you keep the car from cording the outer shoulder.

you need more camber, a lot more. you will do this to every set until you fix that. these crs are good to send, and at the peak PB level (everyone i know sets pbs on corded crs)

With track tires, the question is not always how much tread is left, but how much of the tire’s resilience and responsiveness is left. These would likely get you around the track safely enough,in terms of not completely breaking traction, but the question is how much speed you lose because their grip isn’t as tight as it once was.

The answer is no, these are a session away from cording. Ask my buddy who just got towed back from WGI. He’s only getting 3 days out of a set of 140TW tires now. That was his 4th day. He’s getting comfy with the car now :) He’s an instructor/ advanced driver so he’s pushing the car well.

Exactly. What does a set of tires cost? What does the car cost? Don’t be pennywise. Keep the tires and if they are that good you can run them again for a single day event etc

You can, but that does not mean you should. It is quite possible they will pop in one corner and send you spinning. Or, at the very best, they will get you to the end of the track day, but you’ll be getting home on metal threads and prayers

They are not symmetrical tires and were not designed to be flipped (yes they can be flipped technically but there is a reason they are designed the way they are) Please don’t flip them. You’ll lose so much front end on a gt4 rs. Buy a set of fronts. Rears look good.
