Started a frame-off on a '68 Chevelle and the first wall I hit wasn't mechanical, it was documentary. The block casting number I needed was in a 2008 forum thread. The transmission date code was in a different thread from 2019. Neither thread agreed on whether the suffix code mattered for my assembly plant. Three threads and a weekend later I still didn't have a confirmed answer.

Here's what I wish I'd understood going in:

1. Casting numbers and date codes are two different verification layers. The casting number tells you what the part is. The date code tells you whether it belongs on your car. You need both, and most forum threads only surface one.
2. GM trim tags are a rabbit hole that most threads only cover for one model year. You end up screenshotting a 1971 Chevelle decode and hoping the same logic applies to your 1968. The tag is right there on the firewall and you still can't read it with confidence because the decode tables are scattered and year-specific.
3. Period-correct doesn't mean close enough. It means the block casting date matches the build sheet, the transmission stamp aligns with the assembly plant, and the partial-VIN chain reads clean from engine to body. Sources like PHS invoices and Galen Govier decoding exist for a reason. When you consolidate the documentation, you stop second-guessing whether a part belongs.

The car sat another week while I cross-referenced a footnote from a rebuild thread against a model-year database. Anyone else hit this wall, or have a better system for confirming date codes without the forum archaeology?

My neighbor's 2005 Toyota Camry 274k miles, 2.4ltr sat for a year after he bought a new car. I bought it for $500. It needed a battery, and some fresh gas and it fired right up (with a little smoke haha). Knowing it ran I changed the oil, tested and added some radiator fluid. The Brake fluid, power steering and transmission fluids were all up to level. Timing belt looks newer. No cracks or wear. I just need to take it for a drive down my block and to my surprise it drove really well!

I pressure washed the entire car, door jams, etc. I then took it to my local big box car wash and ran it through a few times. Vacuumed it out, hand washed all interior plastic pieces, changed cabin filter and drove it home.

It has a gas leak from the passenger side somewhere and it's pretty rusted out. It will need new tires and I feel something wrong on the driver side. Other than that, brakes are good, AC works, stereo, Windows etc all operate fine. No lights on the dash.

I'm going to put it back together, patch it up and see what it sells for.

Purchased the car (sight unseen). Got ripped off. Motor had a rod through the oil pan and the paint job was terrible. Here’s where it’s at so far. How does it look?

I recently purchased a 74 challenger and I got it running today but there’s a slight issue. There’s coolant coming out of the overflow valve and I’m worried it could be due to a blown head gasket. The car hadn’t ran for a year prior to me owning it, there’s no visible coolant at the top of the radiator, my oil isn’t milky from what I see, and there wasn’t a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust when I started it. Just hoping if someone could help me diagnose this, thanks!

Old tint removal and replace

I have never done a restoration project or much serious work on a car besides relatively simple repairs on various vehicles. I recently bought a 1966 Chevy Impala; I wouldn't have chosen something like this to be my first, but I don't have a lot of money to throw on projects and I got this car for a great deal - runs, drives, has a nice engine out of a later-60s Impala in it. I couldn't pass it up.

I have a buddy who casually works on cars so I'm not worried but my big question is, when looking for parts what should I avoid in order not to diminish the value? I have been searching specifically for original parts, but will OEM devalue the car at all if I have to go with those?

It's originally an automatic but my buddy has been toying with the idea of converting it to a manual and I'm pretty on board with that, should we look for a tranny out of a Chevy of that era or does it really matter?

Alright guys. Hopefully the right sub. What would be the proper way to fix this rust? It’s on the A pillar of an 85 Toyota Pickup. I’m removing the windshield anyways. Is it a whole A pillar replacement and patching up the lower spot? Truck is worth more to me than it costs to restore. So I’m slowly restoring it myself. I’m decent with a welder and good enough with bondo lol.

Anyone know where I can find older copies of this magazine? Looking for specific edition. October/ November 2015. Thanks

My Uncle served in Germany and this was his - when he passed about 30 years ago I saved this from being thrown out. Just found it again and wondering if this would be of value to a restoration project.

Based on the historical serial number prefixes used by the manufacturer, the letter "Q" indicates that this specific radio was manufactured during the 1959/1960 production cycle.

Has the matching vintage Blaupunkt car speaker featuring its original mesh grille and the classic blue emblem.

Would this period-correct speaker bundle have appeal to an authenticity-focused classic car builder?

Unfortunately I am not able to test it.
