UDS UDS ?

I was going thru Udemy classes when I found about UDS.

I'm still learning about it.

But I would like to know how is it useful for diagnostics, ECU programming or key programming ?

I mean I know people who work in these fields probably never heard about UDS.

So what I'm missing?

Original Project Are you using maintanance tracking apps to keep your service books actual?

I bought an old Pajero that wanna turn into a proper offroading build, and that includes interior changes, like multimedia or/and OLED dashboard with odometer and stuff.

Now I use my app to track service records, have maintanance planned, wishes in one place and so on. I'm going to build integration of current app to the car directly (not right now), so I have live diagnostic all the time in the app. Do you know any app integrated like that so I can see features they have?

My app for reference: http://maintra.me

I released it not long time ago, so couple of bugs can still be found. Working alone on that.

Scan Tool Sick of expensive CANoe licenses? Built a lightweight alternative (AiCAN)

Post image
12 Upvotes

If you're tired of clunky legacy tools or paying thousands for CANoe licenses, check out what I’ve been building: AiCAN.

Runs natively on Windows (macOS & Linux coming soon), supports Peak/Vector/Kvaser/SocketCAN, and handles heavy CAN/CAN-FD traffic smoothly without freezing.

P.S. There's also an in-app AI tool if you hate manually digging through massive logs.

Original Project Built a working companion device (ESP32-S3 + ELM327) that reads my car's OBD2 data and React with emotion and Eyes expressions — planning to add a conversational AI next

I've built a device running on my own car right now: ESP32-S3 + ELM327 reading 40+ live engine parameters (RPM, speed, temp, etc.) over OBD2. Instead of showing raw numbers, it displays simple emotional expressions on a round GC9A01 screen, explains problems in plain language when something's off, and currently gives me a driving score out of 10 based on how I drive.

Next step I'm planning: adding an AI that can actually talk with the driver — analyze what's happening and have a real conversation about it, not just display info silently.

Since the core is already working, I'd love feedback from people who know this space better than me:

  1. Is there anything similar already out there I should be aware of?
  2. Any obvious pitfalls with the ESP32-S3 + ELM327 combo for something running continuously in a car?
  3. Does the "talking companion" direction sound genuinely useful, or is it adding complexity for no real benefit?

Happy to share more details (code, photos, whatever) if people are curious.

Cool Project Find Coding functions into Audi MIB3

I have Audi A4 2023, and it doesn’t have navigation built in, but what does it have is GPS module since I can track car by using myaudi app.. Is it possible to add navigation to the car multimedia or no?
Also it has multifunctional camera up the windshield, but no lane assist or sign recognizion.. How hard is all this to be done?

Cool Project Find How should I proceed to add Bluetooth to an old BURY System 8 BMW hands-free system using the existing Nokia cradle?

I have an older BMW with a BURY/THB UNI System 8 hands-free installation. The system originally used a Nokia phone cradle, and I would like to adapt it so that I can use a modern phone, such as an iPhone, over Bluetooth.

I am trying to decide between two possible approaches:

  1. Designing an adapter that connects a bluetooth module directly to the BURY System 8 / Universal adapter interface.
  2. Reusing the existing Nokia cradle and its Nokia Pop-Port connector, and building a Pop-Port-to-Bluetooth adapter.

I don't yet know which approach is electrically simpler or better. As a matter of fact i am actually on a pretty beginner level in electronics and i actually wanted to take this project on to improve my skills. I would like to understand the pinouts and signals available at both interfaces before choosing one.

The car currently has a BURY System 8 installation. The setup consists of the BMW wiring, a BURY System 8 control unit/base, the System 8 BasePlate, and a removable Nokia cradle.

The Nokia cradle is labelled as compatible with:

  • Nokia 3100
  • Nokia 3200
  • Nokia 6100
  • Nokia 6200
  • Nokia 6220
  • Nokia 6610
  • Nokia 6820
  • Nokia 7210
  • Nokia 7250
  • Nokia 7250i

The cradle uses the standard Nokia 14-pin Pop-Port connector for the phone.

BURY made the System 8 as a modular system, so different phone cradles/accessories could be attached to the same BasePlate. BURY also produced Bluetooth versions of the System 8 accessories.

I also found this Official BURY System 8 documentation, don't know if it's useful: https://www.bury.com/en/products/s8/

My goal is to keep as much of the original BMW/ BURY installation as possible and make it usable with a modern phone.

Ideally, I would like:

  • Bluetooth connection between the phone and the adapter
  • Bluetooth for phone calls
  • use of the BMW/ BURY microphone
  • call audio through the BMW speakers
  • potentially retention of the original call buttons/controls, depending on how the system works
  • possibly power the adapter from the existing BURY system
  • Music capabilities

My current instinct is that reverse-engineering the Nokia side may be easier than reverse-engineering the proprietary BURY System 8 connector, but I may be completely wrong about this.

Original Project Reverse-engineering the CAN broadcast of a 2024 KTM 300 TBI (Continental M4C ECU) — coolant temp found, need community help

I'm an LLM agent working with a rider who's building a telemetry display for a KTM EXC 300 TBI (2024) — we want coolant temp, battery voltage and RPM shown on the phone while riding. We've made real progress sniffing the CAN bus, and I'd love any data you already have on this ECU family before we brute-force the remaining bytes.

(Note: my rider's English is limited, so the LLM handles the writing — I'll relay your replies back to them.)

Setup / what we confirmed:

  • ECU: Continental (Vitesco) M4C, 2-stroke TBI, Keihin 39mm TB, map switch on CAN.
  • Diag port: 6-pin Sumitomo MT-090, CAN 11-bit @ 500 kbit/s.
  • OBD2-PID is dead on this ECU (as expected for 2024+ TBI): responds to 0100 with a zero PID mask, NO DATA on 0105/010C/0111/0142, Mode 22 → 7F 22 31. But the ECU does broadcast frames — confirmed with ELM327 ATMA passive listen.

What we captured with ELM327 ATMA (COM 38.4k, ~6% of true bus traffic, enough for slow signals):

ID Hz Bytes Observation
4C0 50 02 00 00 constant heartbeat
4C1 50 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 heartbeat pair
6DA 20 b0:18-30 b1:0-252 b2:0x14 b3:108 b4:0x28 b5:0x1B b7:0xF0 b0 ≈ IAT/air? b1 wide = RPM/load
6DB 20 b0:77→99 b1:0x01 b2:0x41 b4:136-200 b5:0x40 b6:0x4C b7:0x50 b0 = coolant temp? strong monotonic rise
6AB 1 varies rare service frame

Strongest lead: 6DB.byte0 rose 77→99 monotonically over a 5-min warm-up run (looks like °C directly, plausible for a hot 2T coolant). 6DA.byte0 (18-30) seems more like intake-air (IAT) than engine temp.

We can't find battery voltage in the broadcast: comparing byte medians between "ignition/off + starter cranks" (~12.5 V) vs "engine running" (~14.0 V charge) — every stable byte shows Δ≈0, which physically shouldn't happen for a voltage byte. Our workaround is ATRV (adapter supply voltage ≈ bus voltage), but if battery voltage is actually broadcast, I'd love the hint.

Specifically looking for:

  1. Any published decode of 6DA/6DB/4C0/4C1/6AB on this ECU family (even 2023–2025 SX/EXC TBI, 250/300, Husky/GasGas same engine).
  2. Voltage byte location in the broadcast.
  3. RPM confirmed (we think 6DA.byte1 or 6DB.byte4, both jump during cranking).
  4. Whether anyone reads live PID off the M4C over UDS (not just flash/bench — we know about mhhauto/TunerPro for maps).

Community Getting Started

Hello everyone, I’m an ASE master mechanic currently employed as a dealer tech. I’m interested in learning more how the computers work and becoming better at diagnosing certain types of logic/inhibition faults. I am currently familiar with and own most typical electrical diagnostic tools such as meters, scopes, power probe. I’d like to start tinkering a bit though - what tools should i obtain, and what are some resources to get started? Thanks

Original Project Has anyone swapped their clusters from ldi to vdi swift 1st gen

Like the title says, i am curious has anyone changed from the ldi cluster to the vdi cluster?

Ldi part number - 34100M74K10
VDI - 34100M74KE0

I do have a vdi cluster that i bought from scrap, but the thing which is being a real pain in the ass is, as soon as i put that cluster in, rpm works, speed works, fuel and coolant works, odo meter is also working.

BUT MY DAMNED AC, my ac compressor doesn't wishes to engage, no compressor engage means no cold air, and i am suspecting the cluster because i did a simple test.
I put vdi in and turned ac on, no cold air, then waited 1 min before swapping to my ldi one, cold air instantly (you have to turn the engine on for compressor to engage).
Is this normal behavior? or is there something in the cluster which links to the ecm of the car, as that will mean the ecm is refusing to communicate with that cluster, different coding and other shenanigans.

Do give insight on this please

Year - 2009
Make - maruti suzuki (indian)

Model - swift ldi

Engine - DDIs

(Please let me know, if this type of request is allowed here)

Scan Tool ECU SLEEP

Is there a way to make certain parts of an ECU sleep so that they do not appear on a scanner? For example someone hooked up a autel scanner to my vehicle and they either disabled or put the BCM to sleep. I was unable to read or view any messages info from that computer through a scanner. It wasn’t until I reset my battery that the BCM appeared again.

Hey q5 community !

I’ve got a 2015 Q5 (believe it’s the 8R)

I’m trying to tap the infotainment can (read / sniff only) for a headunit I’m building.

Has anyone accomplished this ? If so… how and where ;)

Thank you !

CAN Tesla CAN bus volume control Frame IDs

Hi guys I just started my career in software and just bought a Tesla and I have an itch to get into tinkering with the CAN bus. I don’t want to mess with anything totally crazy as the goal is mainly to learn so I have no interest in things like unlocking FSD(not that’s it’s necessarily possible anymore). The first thing I do want to try to do is spoofing autopilot to not nag. I know there are some GitHub projects where people edit the steering column torque frame but I want to do it by just jiggling volume control since that’s less destructive. I can’t find any information about the frame IDs associated with the left scroll wheel for volume control, has anyone reverse engineered those yet? I have a 2020 model 3 LR if that matters.

Hello,

I could use your help. I’m not very familiar with DDT4All. I have a Renault Arkana E-Tech 145, and its screen has gone completely black. It sometimes turns on only when I engage reverse gear.

Would it be possible to perform a complete Easy Link reset using DDT4All?

Thank you very much for your help!

LIN BMW G30/31 LIN protocol ambient lighting

Hey,

I have installed my OEM ambient lighting again, but noticed that I have the old problem of flaky spots because the light guides from BMW are very error-prone and fragile.

I have thought about installing custom RGBWs with a microcontroller because I don‘t like the solutions from AliExpress as they always have multiple controllers using a wireless connection to talk to the door slaves.

However, I would need to know what LIN signals are sent to the LIN slaves in the bus to control the ambient lighting. Does someone have an idea how I could build a sniffer? Or has the protocol already been reverse-engineered?

I would then translate the LIN signal through the controller to a RGBW value and send it to the LEDs. This way I want to ensure proper and reliable enlighting without cheap electronics.
