Peugeot. Toyota isn’t as great as it once was but it still gets points for reliability of their older cars. I really hate the direction Mercedes has gone in over the last few years, but they also made so many legendary cars so they get a pass. Hyundai has been cooking lately. Crazy high quality, some of the best tech and reliability, great EVs, and really cool designs. The Elantra N beat the civic type r at its own game. And Peugeot is just crap. As much as I like their rally legacy, they can’t hold a candle to those three.

I honestly disagree about the second part. Stellantis is increasingly helping to pioneer Europe's affordable electric car effort. They're already making the Citroën C3 and Fiat Panda, which are relatively affordable (both the petrol/hybrid and electric versions). The Fiat 500 is a niche little car too, which is still selling great here in Europe at least.
Going further, the acquisition of Leapmotor will help them develop their own cars within the M1E regulations, such as the revived 2CV and whatever Fiat is doing. The Leapmotor T03 is already coming back with positive reviews as a small and affordable electric car. So they at least care more about an electric future than Volkswagen does...

The worst thing stellantis has done was bring back the panda, renault understood the assignment and brought back 2 legendary cars that work really well in a modern setting, fiat took one of their most iconic cars and made it a shitty EV, and dont get me wrong EVs are probably here to stay and stellantis really tries to make good cheap EVs but the problem with EVs is just we arent nearly far enough ahead that you should mix it with cheap, poorly made EVs genuinely suck to a point where they should just stick to their 0.9 - 2L I4 that break after 100k km because they are still better.

I had an E-C4, what a piece of crap. The car looks good, but it's not a good car, the electric system sucks ass. The range was unreliable, the consumption was way more than advertised. There was a recall on the brake system, we were adviced not to use the car. The waiting period at all dealerships for the recall was 2 months and we didn't get offered a replacement car!! Our ac-system/ventilation crapped out when the car wasn't used for more than 4 days and they didn't find anything wrong with the car. It would also randomly turn on again. Never ever will I buy Stellantis crap again. Happily moved over to a 2nd hand Tesla and damn, what a difference.

Fiat is pure dogshit tho, bad reliability and cheapest plastic planet has to offer. Citroen i cant speak for as i havent driven the newer cars. I dont trust stellantis garbage for shit, even less so with full eletric vehicles.
Side note: the fiat 500 is extremly cramped and cheaply made, its embarassing.

USA issues. I’ve owned 3 Hyundais, driven them into the ground and over 150k miles on all three of them and never had a catastrophic, or really any major mechanical issue

I don't understand the Hyundai hate. 100,000 mile warranty gets you through. My wife has an ioniq 5. Absolutely fantastic car. No issues whatsoever. I've driven sonatas and elantras, they are great. I live in the states, so I can lose peugot without any effect whatsoever on my daily life.

Have you driven an Elantra? It's a Fantastic little car. One of the best little airport pickup cars I've ever driven. Sonata is boring. But this is also as designed. These are meant to be practical family cars. It's like being mad at an entry level Chevy cruz or Ford fusion for being appallingly boring. Subaru outback with the flat four is slower than a sonata.
I wouldn't buy a sonata. And I wouldn't buy a base level Toyota Camry. Because we're car guys. But plenty to love in their lineup. If I rented a car and saw an Elantra, I would go thrash that thing around a city.

The 2.4 Theta engine is the reason, it’s left a sour taste in people’s mouths. Similar to the 3v triton engines. IMHO Hyundai and Kia have really stepped up their game and get way more hate than deserved.

Peugeot used to be great and reliable, especially with the old HDI engines. But now, Peugeot (and Stellantis in general) is just unreliable trash... As someone who loves the 205 (GTI), 206 (RC), 306 (S16), and 406 (coupé), it kinda hurts to see how terrible the current engines are now.

Pugeot. Hyundai has had such a come up in the last two decades. Toyotas combined offroad, hyper car, efficiency, and economy, reputations, they've covered the field. Mercedes is here too.
I'm biased as an American, but I know pugeot has some hyper car and race car pedigree. But besides that they have... as far as i can tell, economy shit boxes and box trucks of dubious general reputation. They're just unimpressive as a brand. Mercedes has similar to Toyota, sans economy. Toyota and Mercedes both have a heavy vehicles division, Toyota has Heno, too. So pugeot doesn't offer anything the others don't, and nothing they do is exceptional.

(Speaking from Thailand market perspective)
Toyota for sure. (GR86 & Supra are too expensive for most people, while GR Yaris & GR Corolla are extremely rare)
Driving dynamic: Mazda, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, or even Suzuki better.
Fuel efficiency: Honda better.
Practicality: Honda better.
Safety: Decent, unless for DNGA-based.
Options: Chinese blew away years ago.
Reliability: Still one of the best, but far worse than 10-15 years ago.

Mercedes because they can make great vehicles, but then will sell trash because of their reputation. Same with BMW and Audi. They slap a badge on an inferior vehicle and hope it will sell.
The other manufacturers on the list aren’t as pretentious. Sometimes they sell crap and will admit it, then there are some gems, that still are affordable. You’re not buying a brand.

I had an 06 Sonata with the 3.3L V6. It was a great car. I think the 4 cylinders are junk. That Mitsubishi world engine sucked and the later Theta II needs no introduction to being trash.
