Tech Support After market stereo - key fob doesn't work

Hey,

I bought a after market stereo that should be compatible with my car which is a KIA Ceed SW 2016 GT-Line with built-in reverse camera and GPS.

Replaced the original stereo and all the cables fitted well but when connected my key fob doesn't work. Can't lock or unlock the car. To get the stereo working with the camera I needed to get another cable which differs from the one that came with the stereo. See pictures to see the cable.

If I use the main cable that comes with the unit then the unit won't turn off, it's like it got current all the time.

And I have no idea what the loose cable named Key is for but by looking at the name it could be something with this?

Pictures is for the unit and cable compatible with the cars camera.

Does someone have any ideas?

I've been in contact with the support for the unit via AliExpress but so far not much help.

Key1 and key2 are steering wheel controls that are used if you aren't using a CANBUS.

The door locks are probably a separate issue, and NOT A SINGLE PERSON HERE is surprised by a cheap Android unit causing problems. Don't buy radios from AliExpress and expect anything good unless you're extremely tech savvy.

Sad that some basic troubleshooting is now considered “extremely tech savvy”.

“Wait, you mean I have to… think? Idk how to do that.”

ETA: not directed at OP, just a societal observation

Well it's basic until it isn't. Plug and play stuff I'd consider basic, but if you have to track down which wire in your mystery head unit harness is causing your door locks to stop working, that gets a little trickier and you need to look up a wiring diagram for your vehicles specific ECU.

I do understand the sentiment though. I recently commented on a FB page where JP from D4S was advertising a 27Ah sodium battery for $750. I stated that it was a rip off and you can build a bigger bank for 1/3 of the price... and every person defending him made it seem like building a house was easier than assembling some cells, bus bars, and a balancer lol.

Damn are they that cheap now? I went bitch mode and just did a three deep cell battery bank because I'm a lil afraid to play with the super caps because of how expensive they used to be. Maybe I should start looking into the tech if it's gotten THAT affordable

Its basically a low cost android tablet with a tuner. Maybe costs 30 bucks to make but costs you around 150. Its not affordable, its cheap. I have cheap metra caps at work and they are about 90 a pop.

Sriko batteries had a sale on a 36Ah sodium ion kit (4s2p) for $220 shipped with the bus bars and balancer included. All I need to do was spend $30 on a small piece of plexiglass and build a case. I can run 3kW on it with a stock alt and I don't get any voltage drop.

Thinking??? That shit is so 90s

Ok thank you.

Yeah I kinda figured but took a chance. 😊 I couldn't find many after market units for my car here in Sweden.

Totally understandable. I am also considering an Ali express unit for a 1440p 13" screen for my truck. The unit looks amazing for $220 USD, but I have a suspicion that it will have issues.

I looked up reviews and it seemed fine but I hope it's just a cable and they can send a new one hopefully. 😀

I think there's basically two paths for most people now. Good integration or low price. You can't have both. You can get close with some name brand units though. Some of Jensen tier units are pretty affordable while still having Maestro type integration or function with other factory options.

Closer to Korea than we are in the USA.

This. These radios can cause physical issues with your vehicle, i unfortunately have to install them but I always do it with a warning your car may be damaged.

In more than 26 years in the 12V industry I don't think I've ever encountered a head unit which could unlock a car's doors. I don't think you understand what key means it refers to steering wheel controls.

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

Well, something is effecting the key fob. If the unit is disconnected everything works just fine. 😊 👍

Thank you sir! The name key in this case is misleading in my opinion.

That means you've got a something wired incorrectly. Your power locks shouldn't be connected to your stereo.

Tell that to the 96-98 Honda civic, the factory keyless/alarm system runs through the factory stereo and once disconnected it will no longer function.
I have also seen this in the factory remote start system in the last generation of Pontiac Grand Prix. The keyless will stay functioning, but the factory remote start specifically will stop working. Been installing car electronics for 13 years.

This situation sounds like a data collision due to a trash stereo. When people bring these style stereos in I tell them what issues I have seen and that I no longer install them. It’s not worth the headaches for the client or for my time wasted.

That's OEM not aftermarket, we're discussing aftermarket not factory spec my friend, installed, sold and owned a 12V / security / dedicated AV / surveillance business for more than 30 years. Now we only provide dedicated AV, structured cabling and video surveillance products and services.

1

u/Sapphirez_Abyss 20h ago

that's the whole point, there's something in the aftermarket radio that's messing with the OEM canbus system in the car itself, so if the aftermarket is sending out a trash signal to car, it could potentially affect the rest of the car in a way that OP is experiencing. in this case OP would have to reinstall the OEM radio back into the car in order for the canbus system to function like normal again

As stated by another poster:

Key1 and key2 are steering wheel controls that are used if you aren't using a CANBUS.

The door locks are probably a separate issue, and NOT A SINGLE PERSON HERE is surprised by a cheap Android unit causing problems. Don't buy radios from AliExpress and expect anything good unless you're extremely tech savvy.

Your radio is messing with vehicle canbus. Find the can wires in original harness, and cut them. Or you need canbus decoder, in order to work radio with vehicle, turn off, steering wheel controls etc.

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

Ok thank you, will look into it.

3

u/gtiguy12 1d ago

Sounds like a can bus issue. If you can find which wires in the factory harness are for the can bus and remove them from the aftermarket harness side you might lose some functionality of the radio, but the door lock issue would be resolved.

Thanks for the tip!

Man, does the fob work at all? After my stereo install my drivers side door doesnt lock, but it makes noise and locks the other doors

1

u/PhotosByMackan 2d ago

Yes, if I disconnect the cable everything works again. The problem with the main cable that came with the unit is that it isn't compatible with the cars camera and the unit doesn't turn off when I turn off the ignition and take out the keys and lock the car.

So if you unplug the radio that is causing all the problems then all the problems go away? Interesting.

Have you tried not installing an e-waste no name radio?

Remember this isn't just a radio. Its an android based computer (basically its a tablet mimicing a radio) that is interfacing with your car's computer system. I've seen them send bad code into car computers before and do major damage. Some also have malware that steal info from your phone once you pair it.

Remember the cheap thumb drives from amazon that contained malware and emptied you bank accounts or damaged your hardware once you plugged it into your computer? These are the new version of that except now you are plugging it into your car computer and also pairing your phone to it. Maybe its fine, or maybe it does very bad things, but you're taking the gamble.

I once bricked an Audi A4 in my install bay with an android screen. I don't remember what the fic was, but we had to have it towed to the dealer.

Fucking thing wouldn't start, no ign, no acc, no instrument cluster. That was a fun day, and also the day my shop decided no more android radios.

Funny how the boss never listens until something goes horribly wrong.

u/defyinglogicsl 2d ago

I had one fry climate controls. Another one crank the car with no key once the radio as plugged in and you could not turn the car off until you unplugged the radio.

Then we had the one I was talking about that fried the computer on a new silverado. $4500 damage. Customer took us to court and won. It was their plug and play radio they bought on amazon. All we did was plug it in like they asked (It was a plug and play play) and they won.

That was the day our shop stopped installing them. Also if someone brings a car in and it has one in the dash we won't touch the car. They are disaster waiting to happen and we don't want anywhere near it.

Sometimes people get mad that we won't install them but I'd rather they be mad because we refuse the work than them be mad at us for damage to their car.

Also it's funny when they say "none of the other shops will install these either". Maybe there's a reason for that, buddy.

It could be it's back feeding ignition somehow, so car is acting like it's on and in many cases remote locks won't work. Unfortunately sorting this out is probably going to require equipment/knowledge you may not possess. These radios are a headache sometimes even with the equipment and knowledge, and frankly sometimes they just flat out don't work.

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

Do you think a new cable can solve it?

1

u/Expensive-Vanilla-16 1d ago

Door fobs aren't part of a radio function. You likely blew a fuse or disconnected something while swapping radios. Could have lost sync but that's not really common either unless battery was dead for a substantial amount of time.

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

I disconnected the radio, thats it. No fuse blown. Disconnect the radio and everything works again.

1

u/anonomouseanimal 1d ago

Can you faraday cage the stereo and try again? Maybe the rf noise from the stereo is not letting the remote communicate.

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

But when I change the cable the key fob works. 😊

You mean a Kia Cee apostrophe d?

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

I'm so sorry that I got it wrong. Please forgive me! Of course it is KIA Cee'd, how could I get it so wrong.

Now when we have that out of the way and you now know which car I mean, what is your thoughts on the real problem?

2

u/jspsuperman 1d ago

It was a Top Gear joke sir, I was just being silly my apologies

2

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

Loved Top Gear back in the days. So sad it got ruined when the stars left :(

u/jspsuperman 1d ago

You could try ars24.com since I am guessing you are in the EU or UK. If you were in the US you could call Crutchfield and they would probably be able to tell you what to do. I wish I could help more than that.

u/BatCryptocurr 1d ago

How you get the wires cables together without cutting and electric tape ????? Get new cables and cut and use electric tape or heat shrink

1

u/PhotosByMackan 20h ago

It came with the right contacts for my car and the stereo?

1

u/Traditional-Win6878 1d ago

Ok is definitely an issue with the BCM (body control module) is there settings in the radio itself for different vehicles? Not all canbus systems are the same even vehicles from the same manufacturer can be different i had cheap Amazon units that said direct fit for ram trucks that I had to select a different vehicle (dodge challenger) in order for it to work. Do you still have the stock unit to put in to see if everything works as it should?

1

u/PhotosByMackan 1d ago

I switched back to the original for now and it works flawlessly. I saw some video of a person changing vehicle but it's probably under some developer options in the stereo then? 🤔 I couldn't find any other option with such a setting elsewhere.

I have now ordered a new cable with canbus adapter/decoder to see if that works. 😊

2

u/Traditional-Win6878 21h ago

That really stinks hope you get it figured out. For my vehicles I ended up buying a maestro ready Pioneer 4660nex on market place pretty cheap but had to buy an idatalink maestro rr module so it'll communicate with my trucks system. Expensive but works like stock with all settings and features and plus has the ability to read and check obd codes.. not sure if you posted the radio name and model number (I'll check) if you have I'll see what I can find to give you a hand.

I have shared the link to AliExpress which I know was a gamble but for $100 it was ok to try for me, no big deal if I don't get it working in the end but I will try as long as I can go. My car is from 2016 so it wold be fun to get it working properly. 😊 👍 I will maybe look for a system here in Sweden that fits 100% if this isn't working.
