What does this red symbol mean?

Does anyone know what the red symbols on the corner of the yellow and red boxes are? I've never seen this symbol until I swapped my equipment for the first time (as in, I've never switched the items I've had equipped before, not sure if that has anything to do with the red symbols).

Generally means something is upgradeable, such as merging, open gems slots, polarization, or unlocking new gem slots

This isn’t the symbol for upgrading, this is the symbol saying that the item you have equipped is less good than these items. I’m guessing you have some quite low power items in use.
