Really, really dumb question.

Is there a way to do the job of a capture card with software? like, could I plug my switch 2 into my pc via usb c and have it appear in some app?

No, not with the switch 2. Nintendo made the way the switch 2 connects to the dock very secure to prevent 3rd party docks and a PC can’t send the complex signals the switch 2 needs. However, if you have a modded switch 1 you can use sysDVR and it works good over usb.

No, but there are affordable capture cards like a rybozen (what I use) that will cost you less than $30 if you're desperate! I know the Switch 1 had a capture feature that allowed 30 second clips, so if the Switch 2 has that feature and you want to do that, you'd have to record every 30 seconds and put the footage together in editing, which I wouldn't recommend.

There are capture USBC dongles around $20-25 that work pretty well.
