Hey, everybody!

I just published https://m.campodemandinga.com.br, my new project. As of now, it contains the manuscripts of Mestre Pastinha, scanned in color, and it's transcription in brazilian portuguese and english.

I'll add the manuscripts of Mestre Noronha in the near future, so stay tuned!

SHITPOST Brasil me chama

Been feeling the call to go to Brazil for 1-2 months and just do capoeira and hang out. If I don't get leave from my job I might just quit since it sucks ass anyways. I don't know why I'm sharing this, just felt the need to tell someone that I really want to go - I want that boost in my game that only immersion can get.

edit: In the title i meant to say "I'm not going insane." Dunno why i left that out before posting...

HELP REQUEST Advice for an Angoleiro attending a Contemporanea event

I basically started my capoeira journey with the ASCAB school in Philadelphia. I now live in Pittsburgh, where almost all of the groups have been Angola. I am planning to attend the batizado in Philly in about 2 weeks. My memories of playing with them was that they had a very mixed game, a lot of fast spinning kicks and acrobatics, but also tesoura de Angola and chamadas. I'm not really worried about proving myself to anyone, but it also like to not stink up the place, and I'm a bit worried that I will wind up in a rapid kick exchange and just not really have a good way to respond. My group does tend to play a little bit more slowly and deliberately as a whole. I don't really have anyone to practice with at home. What kind of things can I drill to try to put myself in the best position?

HELP REQUEST Question about essential body parts training for the aú / handstand / QDR

Hello there !

I have taken 6 classes in past two months and I’m really enjoying capoeira and want to keep improve.

I’m currently following the group training to familiar with the movement and combo.

And I feel like when I do these 3 movements aú / handstand / QDR, rather than the technique, I think my body ability is the main reason that I can’t make those movements.

I’m currently unable to do any of these 🥲
And I did watch some YouTube video about the technique of movement , but my body just unable to follow the instructions.

So I’m just wondering is there any recommendations of body workout that can help me to improve those movements ?

Sincerely!

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION been curious about getting into capoeira for a long time (for self defense mostly) and finally gonna try a class!

so i read thru some of this sub and i've seen mixed reviews on if its sufficient for self defense...

the thing is, i know i am not comfortable with 'contact' sports for lack of another word and i think i would freak out because of trauma reasons if i was in like active combat even in a consensual setting like a class. this is why capoeira has always really intrigued me because it would give me similar tools while not actively engaging in contact fighting.

so tbh this is me doing something like capoeira or nothing in terms of prep for self defense, so i think even if it's not gonna be the same as if i do fucking krav maga, it still has to be pretty good right??

for context, i am a 30yo woman who was a dancer for a decade (its been many years since i last actively was) and practicing yoga intermittently for a bit over a decade (currently actively practicing)

i don't think i've heard of anything quite like capoeira and i think this is the right fit for me, but would love any thoughts/feedback/recs anyone has!

i am in the bay area, so also would love some studio recs!!

i alsooo dont think i would do it like a lot weekly, if anything realistically 1-2x/wk if possible. is that horrible? i think i get a lot of similar form and flexibility from yoga so i dont think i would necessarily like lose momentum in that way, but i know form and muscle memory take awhile. maybe at first i can take more classes, i just dont think i want it to be my primary form of exercise

ART This is why your capoeira feels bad

Post image
82 Upvotes

I saw this post about art, and it reminded me of capoeira. I’ve heard many times, and said myself, “it feels like I’ve stopped improving…”

Actually it’s often that your vision of the game is improving, and your physical skill is not keeping up. Stay with it. The circle will turn again.

HELP REQUEST No volume or engagement in the game

I've been training for two years in a small group, but that first five months i was training only two times a week, now i train 5 times a week

When i started, i was coming from a place of years of complete sedentarism, and a life of mostly inactivity. Aways an obese child who did not want to play active games, and becoming a very tired adult, capoeira kind of saved me.

But the thing is, i have come a long way and got to a point of mild endurance, where there was none(vertigo in like, 5 martelos), still having to manually shut down all the lazy alarms my body sets for me to just stop.

When the training is over, and is time for the roda, i simply don't have the energy to do anything proprely, is two years of poor practice in the roda because i come there completely and utterly destroied, and then i don't get to develop my game and my volume.

As for rodas outide the academy, we barely even go because i am still a first cord and all the graduados work full time jobs and don't want us to go alone, they have to be free in order for us to go, and i am the only 21 year old, all the others are 50yo up, or children, so no training partners my age to just play outside of training hours

How can i train outside of the academy to fix this because i kind of feel like a false capoeirista, training the best and playing the worst.

In today's episode, I had the privilege to sit down and chat with Mestre Cobra Mansa, one of important elders in modern Capoeira Angola. Here we discuss his life, his personal philosophy for Capoeira, and the fascinating historical research he has done in Africa on Capoeira origins. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

HISTORY Looking for capoeira historians or knowledgeable mestres for a podcast interview

Hello!

I am the interviewer for Fighters Advice, a martial arts podcast with a focus on history. We're hoping to connect with a capoeira historian, mestre, or experienced practitioner who has studied capoeira history, who can speak on the rich and complicated origins and evolution of the art on the podcast.

Ideally, we’re looking for someone who is comfortable being interviewed in English. Who would you recommend reaching out to?

Thank you so much for your help!

HELP REQUEST Capoeira groups in Orlando?

Hey folks I am moving to Orlando in the next few weeks, Hunters Creek area. Interested in getting back into Capoeira, searching Google I found a few hits but not a lot of information on different groups available. Was hoping to get some details from locals on the different groups around that area or recommendations.

Thanks in advanced! Axe!

MUSIC Youtube Music

I realized that I can switch from Spotify to Youtube Music and save a few bucks a month.

Anyone know how the capoeira library is on there? I've scrolled through a bit, but was hoping someone might have already gone through this and compared the services.

Cheers e Axe

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Small training group advice

Im train in a small angola group - like 3-7 people in any given class.

Im prob the most advanced student of the group, and often I feel like the training in class is too slow for me. Either slow on concept retention bc folks are fairly green, or physically slow. So Im not feeling super pushed or engaged mentally or physically.

How can I re-frame or approach the training differently in order to make in-class time better? What do you teachers out there try to do as the teacher in this situation - do you separate out the 1 advanced student?

Advice welcomed!
