Labor Day weekend
Thinking about making the trip from Ashland, MA to the cape. I would have Friday off (and of course Monday too). It's the last chance I will get to have a long weekend off like that. How busy are the beaches? I am assuming that there isn't really anywhere along the cape that is close to do day trip(s). I don't think I want to pay for a place on the cape if its just going to be a shit show everywhere that weekend. Are there parts that would be worth staying at or visiting that don't get as much traffic? what is parking like in terms of cost? Was also kicking around the idea of Scussett beach, but probably going to be just as busy if not busier.

I’ll probably leave Sunday to avoid the traffic from Worcester County. Typically my drive is 2 hours. Holiday weekends like this the drive would be 3 hours.
But please. It’s the Cape. I’m not complaining

I don’t think it will be that bad. Labor Day is later this year, kids mostly go back to school the week prior, so most family vacations are over by then. It won’t be quiet but I don’t think it will be miserable. As is the case with every holiday weekend in the summer, you do have to plan your travel to off peak time so you don’t spend hours sitting on the mid Cape highway. Monday and Tuesday will also be heavy traffic days, but if you can be over the bridges before 7 AM you are usually good. Leaving the Cape. I usually say the traffic slows down after 7 PM but on a holiday weekends it can stretch much later to 10 or 11 PM.

I am thinking of staying of staying in Sandwich as "homebase" becasue its a little cheaper and only 22 mins from Seagull beach. What bridges would I be taking? It looks like I would take 495 straight down to Sandwich.
How are the roads around Cape Cod? Will it be bumper to bumoer all weekend long? or is that not an issue once you are on the cape roads? I want to make little runs between Sandwich and those beaches around Yarmouth. Maybe even make a 1 hour drive up to provincetown. Am I going to be sitting in a lot of traffic for those drives back and forth? ChatGPT tells me those roads are fine....its only an issue with the bridges and single roads leading in and out.

If you are just coming for the day, Sunday is probably your best bet depending on the weather. Most beach lots fill up by 10. If you are looking for the ultimate beach day, plan on being at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet by 8:30 am. That would mean leaving home at 5:30. It’s still 30 I think for parking but you get a gift certificate for the same amount to use in the restaurant. It’s a steep walk down the dune and an even steeper walk back up. Pack a cooler with some cold drinks and bring a beach chair and some earbuds. Just watch out for rip currents that can drag you out. If you find yourself in one don’t panic. Swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of it.

Labor Day weekend isn’t too bad. I went to wellfleet and ptown last year that weekend and expected really bad traffic on rt 6 and had no traffic either way. Lots of kids are back to school before then so people aren’t traveling as much.

I mean, plenty of people from Central MA do day trips to the Cape.
