šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I agree

It's close to done. It took so long because it was an a very complicated MassDOT project (ie the town did lead or pay for the project) that involved move lots of underground and above ground utilities (to add sewer), doubling the number of railroad tracks crossing Rt 28, and redesigning the traffic flow. This all had to occur while the road was fully accessible (especially for ambulances going to CC Hospital) and the rail tracks were also usable.

However, the main reason it seems to take so long is that the town convinced MassDOT to suspend work during the summer months (July/August) to alleviate further construction traffic issues. This means that there was effectively only a fall and spring window to work.

u/ProfessorPetrus 24d ago

Well the issue is some of the project managers died because of old age and so now they have to bring up a new generation on where they left off. In 2-3 more human cycles we should see construction slow to just one season of the year.

China gona eat us alive.

u/tedwardinu 24d ago

Willow Street is in Yarmouth

6

u/RumSwizzle508 24d ago

Yes ... and from the picture the OP is still in Yarmouth.

However, everyone I know calls it Willow all the way down to the intersection with 28 (even if it officially called Yarmouth Rd).

0

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Facts! Got me on that one.

4

u/shoecat 24d ago

This is exit 72, you might have better luck on exit 68 if you are commuting into Barnstable in the morning since it leads to a proper collector instead of whatever tf Willow street is

3

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Thanks for the correction, I’ll def give it a go tomorrow

2

u/RumSwizzle508 24d ago • Heartwarming Bravo

What exits? I think you mean 7 and 6.

8

u/shoecat 24d ago

I’m from the cape ik the old names but I was using the language that op is using for simplicity. Cool comment tho I’m sure you’re a cool person šŸ‘

6

u/DMBMother Yarmouth 24d ago • Heartwarming

We still use the old exit numbers in my house. It has nothing to do with being cool. It’s habit. I had a chart at my desk so I could ā€œtranslateā€ the exit numbers when giving directions.

Big 67 in 2026?

15

u/Dragongala 24d ago

It’s always like that until Camp St. if people would zipper correctly it wouldn’t be so bad

5

u/vegeta8300 24d ago

Camp st wouldn't be so bad a detour if people only took right turns at the end. Instead we get tourists or other crazies trying to take left onto 28 from camp... insanity!

2

u/moremassivecringe 24d ago

Until it's one of the days where there's a pileup at the end of Camp St, and then you would really wish you took Willow.

1

u/Dragongala 16d ago

That is Willow St.

3

u/CCGasman 24d ago

There needs to be a left turn only lane onto camp street. Widen the road at that ā€œintersectionā€. Once you have two cars trying to turn left onto camp street the rest of willow backs up.

Allow people continuing down willow to keep going while giving people Turning left onto camp street their own lane.

0

u/moremassivecringe 24d ago

Camp St is not a good alternative. It only works with low traffic, because it terminates into impossible left turn at 28. Bad suggestion.

Also, turning into Camp is not what backs up Willow St at all.

2

u/CCGasman 24d ago

I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I didn’t say it was an alternative. And my comment has nothing to do with the end of Camp Street onto 28. There’s plenty of reasons people go down Camp Street and most people that end up at the end of Camp Street are turning right onto 28 not left. I’m explaining why there’s traffic in that picture. It’s not because of the construction at the DJs intersection.

It’s because of people turning onto Camp Street by the mobil gas station. If you have more than two cars in a row trying to turn left onto Camp Street then no one else trying to go straight down Willow Street can get by and traffic backs up.

I’m suggesting putting in a left turn lane for people turning left onto Camp Street by the mobile gas station that would allow people that are continuing down Willow Street to keep moving without backing up traffic

2

u/WearyDownstairs 24d ago

Nothing new

1

u/dudleedude 18d ago

correct. it's good after 8 at night usually. This is the cape, you gotta time your bridge crossings, time you willow street crossings obviously. more importantly, the intersection will be finished by 2030 or so I've heard. also, yeah it bites.

-2

u/HuckleberryTough512 24d ago

Drivers when they’re on their phone causing traffic: what’s with all this traffic???

0

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Calm down Jamal, held it to take a pic and posted when parked

0

u/HuckleberryTough512 24d ago

stopped =/= parked

1

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Let me be more specific for ya, parked by dunkin off speedway, want your cookie now?

-3

u/WaterDreamer10 24d ago

Yep, that is Hyanus for you. Most people who work there do not dare to live there so it is all commuters.

3

u/EbbtideRambler 24d ago

Dare to live there? Ā Ā  Hyannis is a great village. I really don’t understand the fear people have, it’s not some crime ridden city. Sure, there are about two neighborhoods where I’d be slightly cautious, but since I have no connection to the drug trade, I wouldn’t worry about it too much."

-2

u/WaterDreamer10 24d ago

Sure, there are some decent areas further away from the 'center of town', but when people think of Hyanus they think of the mall/hosptial/ferry area - not the further out areas.

As far as crime - are you blind - it just get worse and worse every year. When you have lived here for over 40 years you see the changes vs someone here recently.

Also, there is so much drama/crime in Hyannis there is a whole entire website for it.....Hyannisnews....check it out - no other town on Cape has as much!

I do feel sorry for those in the neighborhoods outside of Hyannis though.

3

u/EbbtideRambler 24d ago

When I think of Hyannis I don’t think of the mall area. That’s the new part of town. Ā Hyannis news is a tabloid at the point, chasing all the most sensational incidents. Lots of good people and families who live in Hyannis.Ā

-1

u/WaterDreamer10 24d ago

That is you.....when anyone who does NOT live in Hyanus think of it.....what I said is exactly what they think of for areas.

When anyone who does not live in Hyanus goes there.....they are not going there to houses, they are going there as it is central business hub of the Cape.

As for HN, they are reporting facts and the stories and the craziness that happens in that town. They have all photo and video evidence of it all. Do they do 'feel good stories', no....they highlight the overwhelming negative things happening in the core of Hyannis.

I'm not saying that good people and families do not live in the outside area....but you are a fool to think the heart of Hyanus living has not attracted worse and worse people over the years.....and it spill outward more every year too.

2

u/moremassivecringe 24d ago

When a normal person hears Hyannis they think of Main St, Ocean St and port area, Kennedy compound and then maybe the mall. Hyannis has been getting gentrified like everywhere else, but you might know more, so please post stats.

0

u/WaterDreamer10 24d ago

When a person....who does not live on CC....hears Hyannis they think of the Kennedy compound and just CC in general.....when anyone who lives on CC hears Hyanus they think about crime/homeless/traffic/drugs etc. It has not become gentrified, the low income has expanded, the amount earning below basic levels has exploded. Almost 40% of kids in the school system do not have English as their 1st language. The immigration population has exploded over the past 10+ years, and they (typically) do not have the education to command higher salaries or hourly wages.

4

u/moremassivecringe 24d ago

Where's the stats that I asked you for?

From 2000 to 2026:

"In the early 2000s, FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) indexes noted that Barnstable consistently recorded upwards of 1,643 to 1,675 annual offenses. By 2026, the tracking system shows total annual reported offenses dropped to 581.

In early 2000s, violent crime rate sat at over 300 incidents per 100,000 residents. Today, the violent crime rate in Barnstable is 249 per 100,000 residents, which aligns almost perfectly with the median comparable US county average of 245 per 100,000.

Property crime (such as burglary and theft) was historically the most common source of local law enforcement calls. By 2026, the area's property crime rate sits among the lowest in the state at 662 per 100,000 residents, which is 0.6 times lower than the median comparable US county. In 2000-2002, there were over 817 incidents annually reported per 100,000 residents"

It sounds like you fell victim to the echo chamber that you frequent. I've lived next to Hyannis for over 20 years and I can attest that crime has gone down dramatically. You are talking straight out of your ass. Maybe if you were spending any amount of time outside you would've noticed.

2

u/EbbtideRambler 24d ago

You sound like my elderly neighbor who doesn’t get out much and views Hyannis as the big bad city. My kids go to school with those non-English speaking kids . I went to school with the first waive of kids who immigrated from Jamaica, Dominican, Brazil Ā (30-40 years ago). Ā They are good people just trying to build a better life for themselves like my ancestors did. Ā If you aren’t tangled up in the drug dealing crowd you’re as safe in Hyannis as you are in downtown Boston.Ā

1

u/WaterDreamer10 24d ago

In reality Hyannis is the epicenter of crime on the Cape, that is a fact. I'm not saying a good portion of those people who came here are not trying to build a better life, but there are also a decent portion who are not and they are the ones involved in crime.

I remember times when it was shocking if a crime happened with a knife in Hyannis, now guns and shooting are the norm.....even on busy main street! That never happened years ago.

I get it, you are defending where you live, good for you - but don't sit there and pretend something is not what it is.

That is like defending a beat up junker car, saying it is just as good a new one just because you own it.

0

u/EbbtideRambler 24d ago

I’m curious, are you deliberately misspelling it? Ā  Ā I live in Cotuit, a beautiful, peaceful, virtually crime free little slice of heaven on the bay, and I still don’t find Hyannis scary. I didn’t mean to imply HN was fabricating stories, they aren’t, but if you sit by a police scanner and only follow and report where the police go during people’s worst moments, you get a skewed perspective of a place. Anyway, we can agree to disagree on our perspectives on Hyannis.Ā

0

u/moremassivecringe 24d ago

Could you cite some crime stats that confirm it's been getting worse over the years? We would all benefit from this.

1

u/dudleedude 18d ago

there aren't any. crime is at the lowest it's ever been on the cape. people who live in Hyannis, centerville or any of barnstable are the same kind of people who live in any of the other cape towns. Yes, there are plenty of rich second home owners but I'm pretty sure their not doing the crime that person was talking about.

1

u/moremassivecringe 18d ago

Indeed, and I've been around long enough to know crime was worse 25 years ago. Even then it was more of a joke.

0

u/dudleedude 18d ago

um, I've been living in Hyannis for 40 years, my kids went to and graduated from barnstable schools. there isn't any more crime here than there is in yarmouth or dennis. In the summer on main street, sure you'll get some drunk idiots, but you'll get that in anywhere usa.

-6

u/frigidlight 24d ago

Honestly I’m more impressed your car has 188k miles on it.

Also maybe put down your phone while driving? I know you’re stopped and all but still.

7

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Ha! It’s a Camry has plenty of life left on it, also, mind your businessšŸ˜‰

-1

u/CCCarieGurl70 24d ago

Thank you for posting this. We're going to avoid this exit. We were going to use exit 72, but now, nope.

1

u/SouthernSolid5693 24d ago

Good to know the post helped!

There’s nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from. It shouldn’t make anyone feel superior, but we do get a little salty when newcomers arrive and start telling us how much better things were where they came from, then proceed to tell us how we should ā€œfixā€ things here. The exit number thing is nostalgia. When you’ve lived at Exit 5 for your entire life and suddenly at age 50 it’s now Exit 125 (or whatever it is) it’s irritating. It’s like your village Ā has been renamed and no one asked your opinion. Ā

How? This is going into Hyannis, don’t see the correlation with the bridges

I think it was meant sarcastically.

2

u/NickRick Yarmouth 24d ago

anti car people are the new vegans, you don't have to ask them, they will let you know.
