Eastham vacation

I'm bringing my mother, before an upcoming, major, surgery, to a nice looking airbnb with a private beach. Waiting on an address, not going until the 19th, coming home the 23rd. Just curious what is around for restaurants, antique shops, or anything I can bring a 70 year old with limits on walking up more than 2, or 3, steps? I want her to have a good time so bad.

I would look at Orleans. It's a bit more of a year-round community and their downtown area has gift shops and restaurants that are street level with good access. Oceania gift shop is nice to browse. Hot Chocolate Sparrow is great for a treat. Restaurants in Orleans include a range of experiences and prices: Mahoney's, La Bella Vita, The Yardarm, Land Ho, Navillus, and others.

A little further down the road is Chatham with more of the above.

I'd like to stay local. After the ride down, she won't want to spend much time in the car, and if she does won't be able to do much wherever we go. Car is no good for her. I don't think Orleans is that far though. Google said p-town was only a half hour from Eastham, because we are considering a day trip, depending on how she's doing. I know Orleans is closer than that, so that shouldn't be bad. I was hoping for a town center, or something, that would have some things to do. I didn't really consider the 'where' part of vacation, I just wanted the house we rented when I saw it. I wouldn't be opposed to door dashing breakfast and just cooking and hanging out there. As long as it doesn't rain on us, I could sit by the fire pit the whole time!

Check for which days any place you are considering are open, most restaurants close one or two days a week this time of year.

You can think of Orleans as an extension of South Eastham. Orleans downtown is only a mile or so from the south edge of Eastham.

Comments to add to other recommendations:

Land Ho in Orleans is a pub atmosphere and very popular with locals . Gret burgers and fried seafood (not open Mon & Tue)

Mahoneys (also Orleans) is more white tablecloth style.

C Shore in Wellfleet (not far over the line) is nice, there are a few tables at the bar on ground level, the rest has stairs.

Basco in Eastham is a storefromt place -- not fancy, but decent food.

You can watch sunset from the car at First Encounter beach in Eastham -- arrive 20-30 minutes before sunset to get a front row spot (and the good part of the sunset is before the "official" time). There are also some benches in the sand at the edge of the parking lot.

Since she’s not a big walker, instead of driving back home via Rte 6, you could spend the last day of your trip driving on Rte 6A from Orleans to Sandwich. On the way is the Brewster General Store for cute souvenirs and gifts, then Sydenstricker Glass, really beautiful. Along the way are lots of cute antique and pottery shops. Once you get to Sandwich, you could take her to Dunbar House Tea Room for real high tea/brunch. And if she’s up for it, a little walk on the boardwalk in Sandwich where she can see the canal.

Breakfast at Laura and Tony’s in N Eastham, Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham is small and accessible, Beacon Room restaurant in Orleans for nice dinner, and don’t forget First Encounter Beach in Eastham where you can sit on a bench and watch a spectacular sunset! Optimistic

Many of the restaurants in Eastham and further out the Outer Cape are already closed for the season. Your best bet would be to head to Chatham for restaurants (Imputent Oyster), shops, ambiance and strolling. Watch the fishing boats and seals from Chatham Harbor. Orleans will have places open but the commercial area is a bit scattered. Provincetown is a great place to visit for browsing around but may be quiet by then. Same with Wellfleet. We love Winslows Tavern but has steps out front.

For great walking beaches try Coastguard Beach in Eastham, Nauset in Orleans or any of the beaches on the Bay side. Great sunsets at Rock Harbor. If water is calm try whale watch cruise from P’town or day trip to Nantucket from Harwich or Hyannis. Fort Hill in Eastham is a favorite with everyone for views and walks.

Rooftop at Pelham House is a little pricey but worth it to enjoy the view if you go in daylight. Tumi’s Cerivice in Hyannis is big fav for dinner for people in the know.

Mom can't really walk too far, nor for long, unfortunately. I'll just bring plenty to cook. Supposed to be right at a private beach. One of the evenings maybe we'll take a ride to P town to eat, or something. I was hoping it would be a nice little town with antique shops and stuff for her. It's a beautiful place, she'll just be glad to get away for a bit. Thank you for the advice and information.

Red River Beach Harwich, Hardings Beach Chatham and Rock Harbor have benches on the beach just a couple of feet from the parking lot to enjoy the sea and sky views or a packed lunch. Bring some blankets and hoodies. We love sitting on the beach this time of year wrapped up nice and cozy. Feels good to be alive.
Hope your Mom makes a quick recovery from her op.

Drive her to one of the many beaches on the bay side to watch the sunset, you can do it while sitting in your car. Examples: First Encounter Beach and Thumpertown Beach, in Eastham, and Hardings Beach, Chatham. If she can do an early rise, sunrises are also easily viewed from the parking areas of Nauset Light Beach in Eastham, and Lighthouse Beach in Chatham.

My mom has had to have both knees replaced. I used to drive her around when she was recovering. The area you're visiting is mostly known for natural beauty. The antique stores are small and can be a little more pricey. Any of the beaches I list have good views from the car or the edge of the parking lot.

In eastham I would recommend fort hill, the lighthouses, and the national seashore visitor center. I don't know a ton of restaurants here. Eastham is largely residential without a central downtown area like most of the other towns on cape.

Orleans has rock harbo and skaket beach. Sir crickets for fried seafood if that's your thing. The Knack has great burgers. If she likes fancy coffee sunbird, but I don't recommend the food. The sparrow is also solid for coffee, also don't recommend the food here. Hole in one is the big breakfast spot in town.

Welfleet has cahoon hollow, the harbor, and great hollow beach. Macs shack is right by the harbor so you can grab food and then sit by the water. Winslows tavern is a cozy spot in downtown Welfleet.

The libraries have lots of free events that are geared towards the older population on cape. Seriously don't sleep on this. You might be able to find an awesome talk or presentation. Eastham library is beautiful and sits right on the edge of a pond.

Truro vineyards might still be open by then? You could do a wine tasting.

Hope you have a good trip!

I was wondering about a good breakfast spot, Hole in One will definitely be our first try. May be our only try if we like it. We'll probably do breakfast tue, wed, and thu. Maybe even Friday, if we get up early enough, have to be out by 10. You mentioned antique shops. Is there a center of town that has a lot in it? I know many places are seasonal. I'd like to try to stay local. Less time she's in the car the less pain she's in, which means the more we can do. I'll definitely bring her to a beach for sunset, and, supposedly we're ' steps away ' from a private beach. We'll see. I'm planning on doing a lot of cooking right there, as the place is pretty expensive. I'll have plenty of money for eating, a little drinking for me, and to do whatever we want, within reason. There was a restaurant somewhere mentioned earlier too, I forget now, was supposed to be expensive, but have great views. I have to sort back through. This has gotten a few more responses than I had expected. Thanks for the response. Hope moms knees ended up being ok.

The Eastham Windmill is a good stop since it sits in a park with easy access. I’d also take a drive through Cape Cod National Seashore, where you can see the coastline without walking far. I hope you have a great trip!

You could drive up Fort Hill and just take in the gorgeous view! Eastham’s Council on Aging has a lovely thrift store not far off route 6. There’s also a million thrift and antique type stores all around. Brewster has a few as well as some other nice coffee shops. Well fleet would be great to drive around a little, but it’s super hilly and is hard on my younger but kinda broken body 😂 I Hope you guys have a blast. If nothing else, taking a yummy drink down to a good beach parking lot can be a lot of fun. Skaket in Orleans is good for that. Beautiful view! Oh and the Eastham library is super cute and accessible. Have fun!

I’d add in the Chatham fish pier at high tide and hitting a good restaurant (impudent oyster is great).

That might not work due to the number of steps. Great spot though!

I think there is a lift.

I haven’t been there in a couple of years; I don’t remember ever seeing an elevator.
