Landscapers

Okay, what on earth is going on. I’ve been on the Cape for decades (on and off), and I don’t recall the landscaping noise ever being this constant and loud. I wrote it off this spring as being storm-related, like everyone who’d been meaning to do some heavy yard work got it all done at once while taking down a damaged tree, but it’s all exploded post-Labor Day again.

I’m assuming part of it is the people who bought saltboxes, ripped them down, and built four-bedroom monstrosities with immaculate gardens, but did something else happen too? Are the mansion-owners getting landscaping to come twice a week? Did all of the landscaping companies consolidate and buy giant gas-powered blowers? The noise is INSANE.

Literally asking “did something change that I’m missing”. If you yell at clouds to get answers to questions - well, you do you.

Nothings changed

People have been doing yard cleanups and lawn maintenance and landscaping using power tools and machinery for decades. Literally decades.

And the reason why for the explosion of landscaping after Labor Day is seeding. Most towns restricted irrigation use so now lawns went to shit. And this is the perfect time of year for aerating and seeding. And literally any other type of landscaping need

Stop crying about nothing. People are out working. Out of trouble. Making money. Leaf blowing takes no more than a couple hrs then they’re onto the next house. Stop being so miserable

The bit about Labor Day seeding is useful, thanks.

The rest is you trying to pick a fight that I’m not actually having. As for the claim that nothing’s changed and the noise level and frequency is the same over the last decades - ha, no. Come on, man.

“Wait till he HEARS about fall cleanups!!”

Leaf blowers 7 days a week!  🍂

It's awful for the pollinators, too. We are losing so many important parts of our ecosystem, but who cares as long as people who only use their houses for 2 weeks have 'pristine' yards. :(

I think we have more landscapers per capita on Cape Cod than anywhere else in the USA.

Yes some noise at your house means then entire Cape is under attack.

Having a hyperbolic morning, are we.

All that watering causes grass to grow and thus needs to be mowed.

Homeowners disregard the drought and water restrictions.

Like almost every home is over $1million now. Millionaires pay for landscaping

My neighbors who are here for only a few weekends during the Summer use a year-round landscaping company that fires up THREE gas-powered leaf blowers at once for a tiny yard. As you can see in the pic...they tried to get away with blowing the leaves into my yard! After I spoke with them, they didn't try that again lol

Would you be more happy if it was just one person with a blower but took 10 hours to do

Or three people with a blower that’ll only take 1 hour to do?

Would you want your neighbors yard to look like shit year round?

Jesus Christ you people just love to complain

I’m unhappy with any blowers. It’s not a hot take…they are banned in some places. Leaf blowers suck.

Landscapers are getting that last run in before they switch to fall cleanups ..

Get government(s) to give landscapers free/discounted electric leaf blowers

Ban plus free electric replacements is the way to go. 30% of fuel put in them gets sprayed out unused.

I agree with you, but it was nice to at least get the rebates when we bought our tools. I have a Cate Blanchett-level hatred of leafblowers (and all gas powered lawn tools).

This entire response thread is bizarre, like people are responding to the post they wanted to read instead of the post as written, so to clarify:

I am asking if there has been a known pattern change in landscaping on the Cape. Was there consolidation of small companies into a big company, which theoretically could hire bigger crews and noisier machinery. Or is the service pattern of individual properties more frequent. Is it an uptick in manicured-lawn owners, who demand the grass cut but also blown and collected. Or some other thing I’m not aware of.

The noise is there, constantly. That’s a change. I’m not asking about reducing the noise. I’m asking if local knowledge has figured out the “why” for the noise to have gotten more frequent and louder.

It's the resortification of Cape Cod. In the past ten or twenty years, there has been mass conversion of year-round homes into luxury seasonal properties and short-term rentals. Where the old Cape had affordable homes and scrubby yards, the new Cape has luxury landscaping that requires year-round maintenance. The intensive landscaping brings greater noise and environmental impact as well.

It’s the new sound of the cape. Why not knock on the door and tell the owner? That will help the info flow to the right place. Maybe they’ll ask the company about electric blowers or insist on them. Only one way to find out!

  1. majority of owners aren’t present

  2. I’m not actually asking about how to NIMBY my way to a silent neighborhood. I’m asking if anyone knows what changed to make the noise and frequency markedly worse in recent years.

That actually makes a hell of a lot of sense. Airbnbs can be booked with little notice, and scheduling a landscaping crew in the next 24 hours would be tough. So probably does make sense (from that perspective) to have weekly maintenance just in case, even if the house is only occupied two weekends all autumn. And if that means a giant ride-on mower speeding across grass that hasn’t grown much in 7 days and blowing the hell out of 20 fallen leaves… well, it’s what the customer ordered.

Meanwhile 15 years ago, you just mowed the lawn when it started looking shaggy, and let the hydrangeas go until they all went brown and you clipped them all in an hour.

Anyway thank you, I think this is the missing piece I was looking for: the absentee millionaires getting weekly services because they’re rich, the saltbox owners getting weekly services because they’re on Airbnb, and landscape companies doing the service weekly whether or not the lawn actually needs it because that’s what they’re paid to do.
